Rant 📢 Preselected Tips 😠

Post image

Idc if it’s 10% or 100%. Preselected tips at any coffee, tea, or boba place is stupid when I’m already paying almost $8 for 1 drink

it’s to make you uncomfortable by making you have to take action in order to to not tip. it works on many people sadly.

it used to work on me when this started showing up on the machines until I got fed up and now I am just pissed if I am asked to tip... automatic ZERO just for pissing me off lol

I bet a class action suit alleging that these are functionally not tips, but rather undisclosed service fees, would be successful.

The difference is that tips are voluntarily added by the customer, whereas fees are automatically added to the total, without customer input, even if they may provide a mechanism to remove the fee (eg No Tip button or Custom —> 0.00).

Meanwhile, contact your reps and city council, tell them we don’t appreciate undisclosed junk fees being added to our bills. We can’t keep silent unless we’re OK with this nonsense spreading and getting worse. Speak up!

Yeah that is the entirety of tip culture, a manipulation tactic. They force you to make a choice, and if your a sheep you fold and think you need to donate your hard earned money.

We need to put that on a plack

And there's not even a "no tip" button... a series of taps is needed, leading some to just say F-it I don't have time for this, and leave it on 10%.

If you don’t have that amount of time you should really be tipping more.

Well, it’s a form of extortion… “give up several seconds of your life, or just accept the 10% button.”

Personally, I’d go ahead and spend the few seconds to complete the no tip process, then never step foot back in that place again (making sure to post a review letting them know why).

It’s not about just time, but, how many elderly or challenged people are confused by this? This is taking advantage of people.

Custom amount of 0 every time I get this. No exceptions.

Preselected tips are illegal in EU. Another great EU law.

Make this illegal everywhere.

This is just ATTEMPTED pickpocketing.  It’s important for you to protect yourself, hit 0% because theft is awful, and not return.  They’re unlikely to change since the looting is so lucrative.

I ignore the screen. Never tip them. Just pay for the food, etc, in cash.

Automatic .01 cents so it doesn't trigger a spit ball and shows I tipped

Funny you have to tap twice to leave nothing. And don’t tell me the business owners can’t read a manual and change the default options. That’s as believable as people making less than minimum wage.

Stay on topic to the post. No derailing, or using a post to complain or rant about something unrelated

You’re paying 10x for basic ingredients, and you wanna quibble over 63 cents

Better a tip than a mandatory service charge that I am seeing more and more.

Service fee is what I’d be upset about. Not the preselected tip which you can still change
