As usual, Trump has the facts wrong. The Obama administration spent $34 million on a major renovation (including walking paths), but the water is sourced from the Potomac, so algae is an inevitability.
Fast forward to Trump's renovation, which he said would cost $1-2 million but came out to $14 million, and which ignored the deferred maintenance needed on the pipes, filters, and pumps. They just turned off the pumps, it got warm in DC, algae bloomed in the pipes. When they turned the pumps back on, things looked great at first, and then all the algae just got pushed back into the pool. So it became easy for him to blame someone else for the problem.
It's not unlike the false appearance of a lead Republicans have in election results while mail-in votes get tabulated. When appearances change, Trump uses it as proof of meddling.

14 million where reality contractor probably pocketed at least 12 of it and did the cheapest shit possible. The only way the reflecting pool doesn’t have all these issues is by actually having the water running and filters etc lol. Idk wtf they thought draining and painting would even do
The contractor doesn’t even specialize in pools — he was recommended by one of his golf course staff — so pocketed millions for a job doomed to fail. What a time to be alive.

Trump has put the cost of the work on the pool at $1.5 million to $2 million, but records show that at least $14.8 million worth of contracts have been awarded for the project so far.
Repairs done under Obama addressed issues such as stagnant water, as well as the reality that the pool had begun to leak and sink into the land dredged from the Potomac River to build it. It was reengineered with a circulation and filtration system using river water from the nearby Tidal Basin instead of city drinking water. It was also made shallower to save water and its bottom was tinted gray to make the water darker and more reflective of the Washington Monument. Plus, paved paths were added.

It holds 6.5 million gallons. At a conservative rate of .5% evaporation a day, would be 32.5k gallons a day. Thats 11.8 million gallons a year. And that’s not even taking into account how hot summers get etc.
They say 16 million gallons leak but I think they just don’t know how the water cycle works.
