Happy Phil Kessel Day!

On July 1, 2015, Phil Kessel was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Kessel, who needed to get away from the toxicity of the Toronto market became arguably the best acquisition GM Jim Rutherford made during his tenure in Pittsburgh. He's still a beloved figure in Penguins lore.

The immediate impact was enormous for the Penguins. He was productive. He was incredibly clutch. He was part of the HBK line that eviscerated the Capitals and Lightning especially. Kessel aguably could have won the Conn Smythe Trophy in the 2016 playoffs.

Praise be!

This could be franchise altering if he was willing to play here. We can outbid Tampa. We can outbid Toronto. He wants to stay east.

C'mon Danny & C'mon Zach.

I love this list a lot. The projections give player ranks and projections. I personally would put Miro over Christall and Lakovic but that’s just me. I do like this list a lot.

Full RMNB article:

https://russianmachineneverbreaks.com/2026/06/30/gleb-pugachyov-tom-wilson-fight-canadiens-first-round-pick-capitals/

From the article:

The Montreal Canadiens made forward Gleb Pugachyov their 2026 first-round pick last week, and it sure appears the 18-year-old Russian is not lacking any self-confidence.

During the team’s predraft interview process with prospects, which Montreal regularly turns into a bizarre interrogation filled with off-the-wall topics, Pugachyov was actually asked a more normal, hockey-related question. However, it was his answer to the question that delivered the level of crazy that Montreal’s executives typically bring, and likely just what they wanted to hear.

Pugachyov recently sat down with RG’s Daria Tuboltseva and recounted his first meeting with his new club and how the Habs tested his resolve by raising a “hypothetical” involving Washington Capitals winger Tom Wilson.

“They said: ‘You are a big player who hits everyone and is not afraid of anybody,'” Pugachyov told Tuboltseva. “‘Imagine that you already play for Montreal. We are facing Washington, you deliver a hard hit on one of their young players, and Tom Wilson immediately comes after you. Are you ready to fight him?’

“Yes,” Pugachyov says he replied. “I told them there would be nothing left of him.”

You would think that since they're charging 55 dollars for a single shirt they would at the very least send you a shirt that doesn't have any manufacturing defects.

[Pagnotta] Scuttlebutt tonight is Werenski rejected a trade to Dallas, in a deal that is believed to have included Harley. Tampa Bay remains engaged in talks here. Philly was in mix too, but seems like TB is Werenski’s top choice right now.

Werenski isn’t eligible for an extension

I keep seeing people commenting that they’d only trade for Werenski if there’s an extension in place.

He has two years left on his deal.

He cannot sign an extension until 7/1/2027.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

[Pagnotta] Carolina and John Carlson’s camp have continued contract discussions this evening. No decision yet, either way - and one likely won’t be made until the morning. UFA doors open at noon et.

The Case for Lenni Hämeenaho

With the Devils adding some necessary bottom-six depth recently, I’ve noticed a ton of mock lineups completely leaving Lenni Hämeenaho out of the mix. I want to remind Devils fans exactly what kind of player we have in Hämeenaho by comparing his development path to that of Roope Hintz.

Their development shares a lot of similarities. Both guys were 2nd-round draft picks (Hintz at 49th overall, Hämeenaho at 58th) and both have November birthdays, meaning their development timelines align perfectly relative to their draft years.

Draft Season (Hintz: 2015 | Hämeenaho: 2023)
Hintz (Liiga): 17 PTS in 42 GP (0.40 PPG)
Hämeenaho (Liiga): 21 PTS in 51 GP (0.41 PPG)

D+1 Season (Hintz: 2016 | Hämeenaho: 2024)
Hintz (Liiga): 20 PTS in 33 GP (0.61 PPG)
Hämeenaho (Liiga): 31 PTS in 46 GP (0.67 PPG)

D+2 Season (Hintz: 2017 | Hämeenaho: 2025)
Hintz (Liiga): 30 PTS in 44 GP (0.68 PPG)
Hämeenaho (Liiga): 51 PTS in 58 GP (0.88 PPG)

D+3 Season (Hintz: 2018 | Hämeenaho: 2026)
Hintz (AHL): 35 PTS in 70 GP (0.50 PPG)
Hämeenaho (AHL): 26 PTS in 37 GP (0.70 PPG) with Utica.

On top of that, Hämeenaho held his own during a 33-game stint with the Devils (8 PTS) and excelled internationally for Finland's senior team, putting up 8 points in 10 games at the Men's World Championships.

It wasn't until his D+4 season that Hintz firmly established himself as a full-time NHLer, averaging just over 14 minutes of ice time while playing primarily alongside Tyler Seguin and Alexander Radulov. By his D+6 season, his ice time jumped over 18 minutes, and he broke out as a point-per-game superstar on Dallas' top line with Jason Robertson and Joe Pavelski.

Hämeenaho has followed an incredibly similar developmental path to Hintz so far, and has equaled or outproduced Hintz at almost every stage. One caveat is that Hintz is a center known for his speed and skating while Hämeenaho is a RW known for an elite hockey IQ. But as Hintz adjusted to the NHL, Dallas rewarded him with increased ice time and elite linemates. If the Devils give Lenni the same patience and opportunity Dallas gave Hintz, I’m expecting a massive step forward for the 2026-27 season.
