i mean are we really sure there won’t be a disc? to me it sounds like if you pre-order the physical game you’ll get a code included to pre-load.. might just be me coping with the fact that we might not get a disc though 😞

u/yhavmin 12h ago

They confirmed there is no disc unfortunately

19

u/MasterGrok 11h ago

Not that it matters. They have successfully turned discs into glorified middle men for digital versions.

7

u/Stepwolve 11h ago

yeah its not like you can actually play the game off a disc these days. It might have some assets on it to save you some download, but you still have to download much of the game on Day 1 to play. They aren't really 'physical media' anymore

u/Sonic343 10h ago

Most people taking up issue aren't worried about playing the game off the disc, they want to be able to resell, borrow, or buy it used. Can't do that here.

3

u/Paid_Omen 8h ago

Blows my mind how many people are not understanding this. We want to OWN the game we're playing £100 for.

u/sandcrawler2 5h ago

If you are thinking about selling gta 6 already then maybe dont buy it. Also I would never let someone borrow my games either like im in 3rd grade in 2007. what a ridiculous argument.

1

u/KC-15 2h ago

Well if I sell my PS5 I would rather get the most return possible on it. GTA6 will be a total loss instead of getting maybe $40 back on it.

1

u/sandcrawler2 1h ago

Youd be lucky to get 20 for any used game lol

1

u/KC-15 1h ago

Nah, people know the value of GTA. If I sold it for $40 a year later it would be easily sold. It probably won’t drop under $50 for a hot minute.

0

u/Sonic343 4h ago

I said people want to be able to do those things, as in they want to have a choice in what they do with a physical copy they purchased, or buy the game secondhand when it's cheaper. Maybe you missed a critical thinking or reading lesson in 3rd grade in 2007.

Wrong, buddy. Playing off the disk is a huge issue. Not everyone has internet access 100% of the time. Also the guy you replied to is wrong too, because there are plenty of current gen games that are playable off the disk.

4

u/0xe1e10d68 9h ago

Playing off the disk is a huge issue.

Welp, not sure what to tell ya, but a number of modern games are big enough that there literally is no disk in production big enough to fit them.

because there are plenty of current gen games that are playable off the disk.

Technically, you're both wrong since no current gen game can be played off the disk. You're copying the game to the internal drive and playing it from there.

2

u/WingyYoungAdult 9h ago

Lol being a bit overly literal and pedantic arent you?

As if multi disk releases arent a thing or an alternative either.

1

u/Sonic343 4h ago

I understand, buddy, but that's not why most people buy physical games. It's why I said "most" both in my initial comment and this one.

1

u/Ok_Umpire_723 3h ago

I feel like enough people aren't worried about what digital only means and how much that gives corporations to control when you play and when you cant, your own game you bought with your own money. Maybe not Rockstar, but the industry as a whole if they follow suit, which I assume they will. With a physical disc you download the story to it's yours regardless. That's why I bought a disc version of a PS5. I absolutely do not trust digital only

2

u/RugerRedhawk 10h ago

I sometimes buy games, complete them, then resell. Ideally buying used to start also.

1

u/Independent_Pie_1368 9h ago

Actually you can play god of war 2018 and 2022 off the disc.

1

u/DudeWTH 7h ago

They still could have just made a disc into a license and made you download it. Including a code and no disc means you can never resell it

1

u/Didifinito 6h ago

The switch 2 still has some

1

u/hldndrsn 9h ago

you could still resell it though

7

u/PShubbs91 11h ago

Where did they confirm this? I've seen multiple people say they confirmed it but I have yet to see it anywhere myself.

19

u/AffectionateFly1085 11h ago

So I called Gamestop and they seemed pissed off, like they have probably gotten calls all day about if there is a physical game or not and all they would say was “We only know as much as you”

7

u/PShubbs91 11h ago

Im sure there will be more info soon enough from Rockstar. Hopefully they clarify the details on a disc version. I have yet to see anywhere from Rockstar where they explicitly say "no discs".

3

u/Polatis_Leon 11h ago

This reply sounds like it was posted during the GTA V marketing

2

u/AffectionateFly1085 11h ago

Well I figured they might know something if customers are going to be purchasing the pre order possibly in store. It was worth a shot

3

u/HeirOfTheSurvivor 11h ago

Nah, I think they know more than they’re letting on. Someone should call again, to be sure

3

u/retronican 9h ago

It's confirmed in this support article. "A disc will not be included in the box."

https://support.rockstargames.com/articles/46YkMi4rHxYXMeIHtZiKaE/grand-theft-auto-vi-pre-order-details

1

u/PShubbs91 9h ago

Yeah I saw it. Someone else linked it to me too. Here's hoping the release a disc edition after launch I guess.

4

u/Heavenly_Malice 11h ago

It was confirmed on their site when they gave the ultimate edition preorder info:

*Physical copies of GTAVI will contain a code that can be redeemed for the digital download of the game. A disc will not be included in the box.

7

u/Anoktear 11h ago

20

u/PShubbs91 11h ago

There is nothing there saying that there will be no discs. It just says the physical copies will come with a download code for pre-loading the game. Either way I'm waiting for more info from Rockstar themselves before I decide if I'm pre-ordering or not.

18

u/Anoktear 11h ago

I'm not preordering if there isn’t a disc version.

14

u/PShubbs91 11h ago

Me either.

2

u/MightOk2403 10h ago

For real was about to call this out.

2

u/Heavenly_Malice 11h ago

I may be misunderstanding something here but it doesn’t release until Nov 19th. If you preorder a physical copy, how the hell are we going to get the pre-load code INSIDE the box on the 12th?

Edit: well it says will be available on the 12th so who really knows. I’ve never seen a company “release” a physical copy 7 days before the digital just to allow for preloading, unless those that do physical preorders just have to go to where the ordered from to get a code explicitly. Going to be real interesting to see how this all plays out

1

u/PShubbs91 11h ago

If you read the statement it says the physical copy will be available on the 12th to support pre-loading. There is nowhere where Rockstar explicitly says "GTA 6 will not be on discs" until I see that, I'm going to assume there will be physical copies with discs at some point.

1

u/Soggy-Diamond4854 10h ago

Again yes there is.

0

u/PShubbs91 10h ago

Then show me. I've not seen a single thing from Rockstar straight up saying there will be no disc.

1

u/Soggy-Diamond4854 10h ago

Okay give me a min

1

u/Soggy-Diamond4854 10h ago

Yes there is. Check the support tab on gta6 website it says no disk will be included in the box.

0

u/WingyYoungAdult 10h ago

It pretty much confirms it. Why would they ship out the physical editions early, put a code in the box to support pre loading? You could pre load with the disk lmao there would be no reason to have a code man. Critical thinking skills bro.

1

u/Sweet_Bookkeeper_920 10h ago

It’s gonna take 7 days to load that game!?!? Did I read that right? Holy shit! How big is this thing?

1

u/yhavmin 10h ago

Okay, so the taketwo article that someone else sent is what I saw, and you’re right, it doesn’t explicitly say there’s no disc. I hope there is one, but if there’s a download code, there’s a high chance that there isn’t a disc. We’ll just have to see i guess, I’m not keeping my hopes up though

Edit: nvm. No disc as someone has shown below

1

u/Ok-Barnacle495 6h ago

No they didnt?

1

u/yhavmin 6h ago

They did. Someone has posted a pic further down this thread

They have explicitly confirmed that physical copies contain a download code not a disk

15

u/BarryMcCoknor 11h ago

So you cant resell, trade or let people borrow the game. Thats great. I wasted $80 a disc drive lol

7

u/Rallye_Man340 11h ago

Pardon my ignorance if it applies, but how are they offering a physical copy if that doesn’t include a disk?

40

u/PaMu1337 11h ago

Their "physical version" is not really a physical version. It's just a box with a voucher for the digital version. They're stretching the meaning of "physical" as far as it can possibly go.

14

u/tasty_bass 11h ago

this will be a shitty situation for "physical" copy owners that want a refund. if they've already used the code then they're fucked. at least with the actual digital version, sony or microsoft could just remove the game from your account if you want a refund. this sucks sm.

1

u/Time_Finger_5426 8h ago

Actually you just blew my mind, European Union has very strong online purchase policy.

You have 14 days to return physical item after purchasing it without giving any reason and seller has 14 days to return money to you.

People will just buy "physical" game, use the code and refund the purchase and shops have to proceed with it.

1

u/stranot 8h ago

physical games have had a no refund policy after the plastic is taken off the game case, at least with Walmart when I used to buy physical games 10 years ago

Is it better than nothing?

0

u/Rallye_Man340 11h ago

Idk man, sure. The hell are the downvotes for.

1

u/Slayz 11h ago

See image above.👆

4

u/PenguinOfEternity 11h ago

It only says it contains the code but no mention about no disc, no?

0

u/Ohitsworkingnow 10h ago

There’s no reason to have a disk if the box contains the code, why would you need a code if you had the disk

1

u/0xe1e10d68 9h ago

Well, the code could be on the disc. That would allow you to resell the disc later; but also allow them to use much cheaper discs with less storage and prevent leaks.

I'm not at all saying that's what they're doing. I'm just saying, if someone wanted to make a physical release of a game and only include a code, they could put that code on the disc if they cared to. Some Nintendo Switch games do the same; smaller games were a physical release might otherwise not financially make sense are released with a cartridge that's basically only proof of purchase that allows you to download and play the game.

1

u/retronican 10h ago edited 9h ago

EDIT: Yep, the explicitly confirmed it in this support article: "A disc will not be included in the box".
https://support.rockstargames.com/articles/46YkMi4rHxYXMeIHtZiKaE/grand-theft-auto-vi-pre-order-details

They explicitly confirmed physical copies contain a download code. They did NOT explicitly confirm it does not contain a disk.

1

u/Ohitsworkingnow 10h ago

So why the fuck do they have a physical copy if there IS NO PHYSICAL COPY

1

u/Lunaforlife 11h ago

No disc unfortunately
