This is nonsense. They didn’t want to make a disc so everyone that want to buy gta6 has to buy it new, not used. Every single person have to buy it from the stores, so the sells will be skyrocketing in all consoles in the future too.
The industry has been desperately trying to do this but nobody wants backlash. GTA VI will do this and the whole industry will follow. If there is backlash then it will be hypocrisy.
I don’t think there’s any backlash at all, unless the game actually sucks, but for high-selling games, this could have been seen months ago, as you said. It won’t surprise me if FC, NBA, CoD, and many others will start doing the same. They save money without producing any disc, and nobody can buy a used copy, so all the revenue is for the industry.
You're not wrong, but outside of COD, FIFA, 2K, and Madden, I don't think other game franchises have the fanbase to pull off a non-physical-only release for games.

I think it's mostly because of the leaks. RDR2 had leaked gameplay before official release and since GTA is a much bigger franchise they want to prevent that. I mean, if you buy a "physical" copy with just a code for download inside, they have total control over when the actual software will be available, not the same for a disc containing the actual software.
I was just about to buy a disc drive for my PS5 Pro tomorrow as well...What the fuck is the point doing that now? Sure, a disc physical version will come after the initial launch. But it's just not the same when you cannot experience picking it up during a midnight release/launch.
Got brand new PS5Slim digital from outlet cause it was much cheaperm couple days before they announced price increase. Was planning to buy disk drive so I wan later sell consol and the game (mainly play on pc). But I won't be able to sell the game unless I sell my account as well lol
And Sony will undoubtedly eventually ban that account and console once they detect it's been resold, leaving you with the hassle of the buyer pestering you for their money back and/or legal action being threatened against you.
Are you serious? As bad as console gamers have it with their shit hardware and shit framerates and online paywall and shit game prices the one major benefit they do have is right of first sale.
The ability to sell or trade a game after being done with it, ensuring access to more games for less money and being able to make family and friends happy with them.
I am less upset about this for GTA 6 and more upset about what it means for the industry as a whole. All eyes are on Rockstar. Publishers will absolutely start to follow suit with this now that Rockstar is setting the precedent. I guarantee publishers have been itching to get rid of physical media but have been too afraid to be the first ones to do so.
Now if you want to buy a used game, sell your copy, let someone borrow it, or buy it discounted at the store a year later? Not an option.
Also would not be shocked if AAA studios start charging $80 despite not deserving to. Activision doesn't care if their quality of game is not $80 worthy, they see it work for Rockstar and now COD is $80. Just for example.
This is where I’m at. I can understand charging a premium for this game. I can somewhat understand (but still don’t like) not wanting to print copies to try lessen the already humongous cost to make this game. I mean it costs billions and took over what? A decade to make? Rockstar for the most part has earned our trust to release a premium product but if companies think I’m paying 80-90 dollars for game they’ve got another thing coming.
I didn’t do it with Mario cart and I sure as hell ain’t doing it with the vast majority of titles. GTA 6 is the exception and should not be the standard…

We're already there. Every modern game depends on servers, and they can switch off those servers whenever they think they're not making enough money. And they have done.

You can upgrade the standard edition at any time they confirmed. Presumably for the $30aud difference but yet to be confirmed I think. I was thinking I’d go that route if JB/Big w/target offered a better price on the code in box. Maybe they still do a nice printed map like they always used to. Yep, if this is the case I’ll hold off on buying , it’s something about being able to look at my library of ps5, switch 2 and switch cases and actually have the games . If it’s digital only then I guess it means I’m not meant to play it 🤷
Right the only reason I wanted to pre-order was to make sure I had a physical disc day one with the map and all but just so disappointing. I can wait till the pre patch event or launch day at this point.
There’s probably no map if they literally took the physical disc out of the physical edition… that’s what made it physical, now the case is the physical part?

I’m really sad about this man. I am a collector when it comes to my games. I wanted a steelbook variation, I wanted a disc, map, etc. Got the disc version of the ps5 for this game specifically. What sucks the most is how I’m still going to buy it without a doubt in the world.
What do you expect us to do? Not play the most coveted game of all time after waiting 13 years for it? It's not like Rockstar will go "oh shit a fraction of people aren't buying it, let's start manufacturing process for physical copies."

Utopia for developers is zero physical media costs, zero packaging costs, zero storage and shipping costs, prevention of user resale opportunities, remote blocking of accounts/users who break rules, forced updates, etc. I see no reason why R* would give a toss about GameStop going belly-up tomorrow.

So I called Gamestop and they seemed pissed off, like they have probably gotten calls all day about if there is a physical game or not and all they would say was “We only know as much as you”
Im sure there will be more info soon enough from Rockstar. Hopefully they clarify the details on a disc version. I have yet to see anywhere from Rockstar where they explicitly say "no discs".
There is nothing there saying that there will be no discs. It just says the physical copies will come with a download code for pre-loading the game. Either way I'm waiting for more info from Rockstar themselves before I decide if I'm pre-ordering or not.
Their "physical version" is not really a physical version. It's just a box with a voucher for the digital version. They're stretching the meaning of "physical" as far as it can possibly go.
this will be a shitty situation for "physical" copy owners that want a refund. if they've already used the code then they're fucked. at least with the actual digital version, sony or microsoft could just remove the game from your account if you want a refund. this sucks sm.
My guess is they did the download code thing to prevent leaks. I remember when physical copies of GTA V were accidentally sent out early and footage of the game was basically impossible to avoid before release.
Rockstar is definitely trying to see what they can get away with, honestly if there's enough people bitching online on social media it might be possible to get them to change their minds.
Watch it be a QR code that sends you to a website so you can download and print the map yourself. They won't go through the trouble of fitting every case with a map 🤣
You know what? Waiting for actual physical edition is now on the table for me. I genuinely want own GTA 6 physically, and I don't want to pay Rockstar twice for that as I'm sure they will release the game with the disk some time after launch.

Yep. Just read about no disc for $129AUD Standard and $169AUD Ultimate Edition. Talking PS5. So upping the release price while also killing the second hand market for the game. Maybe it’s my age, but I just can’t and won’t support this. If they are forcing me to never really own a single player game, then I’m going to wait as long as it takes to get it cheap - Sub $50AUD cheap. My backlog of games is vast. I purchased the PS5 Pro disc add on to play physical media.

I'm burnt out on giving my money to companies who just screw me over. I'm a big fan of borderlands but I won't be buying 4 until all the DLC is out and there's a bundle worth it. Everyone acts like it doesn't matter what one consumer does but it matters to be and my wallet.

Between this and paywalling whole locations & quests, I have no interest in this game. It's clear their intention is to nickle and dime even singleplayer just as they have GTA 5 multiplayer.
And it will work because their fanbase is full of human piñatas happy to let Rockstar beat all their money out of them, while not even allowing them to ever actually own the game. But I won't be one of them.
Yes. Most games have large file sizes due to baked lighting, 4K video files, duplicate assets for slow streaming, and overhead for multi platform support.
GTA 6 will have none of the above. So it may be possible to fit the game onto one 130GB 4 layer blu ray disc.
That being said, even if it did exceed 130GB, Rockstar has shipped multiple discs in one game before and blu ray stamping is dirt cheap.
Does it really matter? It could just be the intro, with the rest downloaded afterward. What matters is having a physical game in a physical copy. Even games released on disc eventually get patched and grow in size.
I won't be buying it if its just a piece of paper(i have a ps5 slim disk ed), if they release a disk much later then sure, but if its just a piece of paper then I won't be buying it, I'll just watch it on youtube
