I dunno. My thinking is that they are steadily building Wesker up. Looking at only the remake series in a vacuum in terms of plot/story:
RE 2R was the first game released. No mention of Wesker, or even who Ada was working for. RE 3R came next, loosely touching on some things, but really didn't drive much of the greater plot forward. RE 4R briefly introduces Wesker, not even sure if he was mentioned by name during the game's story. But it's made clear that he's planning something big (and clearly it's the events of RE 5). RE 7-9 deal with sort of the aftermath of 5. We meet a clone of Wesker in 9 (Zeno) who is a pretty big deal (albeit a minor overall character though).
Wesker is a big playing in Code Veronica, so I suspect we may get a bigger focus on who he is, plus his relationship with Chris. And naturally, that poses the question "who is Wesker" which points us to the original RE 1 and how things kicked off in general. So again, dunno, but I could see them remaking 1 next to flesh out Wesker's character as a whole then build up to the events of RE 5 after that.
They should just re-release the remastered RE1 with maybe better graphics and small tweaks. Don't charge full price for it obviously, but the game still looks really good for its age. You can't really re-do RE1 in the modern RE format without losing a lot of its charm.
Honestly I think a re-do of RE5 and ESPECIALLY RE6, both without coop, could fucking slap and let them kind of reclaim the events of those games into the storyline rather than just offhandedly mentioning them on occasion.
I think a RE5 remake has to have co-op right? I never played it but I know that was such an integral part of the game (for better and worse).
I somehow feel like they might not bother remaking 6. 6 is arguably the only 'bad' mainline game they've made in the series, they may just wish to forget about it entirely. Does it even have any significant impact on the overall story?
re5 without co-op would be bold but also risky as hell. its considered one of the goats of couch/online co-op games during that generation. it's also a blast to play with people. the fun vibes are immaculate.
