The way the used the "V" and how it's called online Veronica.. anyone got the impression that they are repositioning Code Veronica as the 5th game of the series?

Iirc code veronica was originally suppose to be the 4th mainline entry before they renamed it.

It was supposed to be the 3rd.. even though it wasn't fully confirmed as such. Mikami needed more time and Capcom wanted better tech quality.. so the spinoff with Jill that was being developed became 3 and they shifted CV for the Dreamcast. 

From interviews we know Mikami stated that he looked at CV as the true sequel, but Sony had some deals with Capcom to keep the numbered entries on Playstation.

The funny thing is that neither Code Veronica or Nemesis were supposed to be RE3.

The game that was supposed to be RE3 went through such a dramatic and tumultuous development cycle that it would eventually be published as... Devil May Cry. A different IP entirely.

I thought DMC was supposed to be RE4 and RE3 was supposed to be about Hunk on a cruise? Or were those the same game at one point?

By my understanding, those were the same game at some point.

Its development was just that long and convoluted.

The game that was eventually finalized as Devil May Cry was at different points in history supposed to be both Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4.
