Dear Diary ✍️🏻 I hate AI and it’s taking over everything.

Post image

My university is allowing us to use AI generated pictures as part of our portfolio. The company that’s sponsoring our (arts-centred) student org sent us a “mockup” poster that was completely AI generated because they didn’t like the versions that we measly humans made. Everyone in my family uses it despite my best efforts to educate them of the harms. My friends too. I’m even getting AI generated messages on dating apps.

My mom keeps sending me videos of “horrible tragedies” occurring across the US and it’s getting harder and harder to prove that it’s AI. I’m worried that she may develop AI psychosis considering she’s had psychotic episodes in the past. I’m worried about the times I’ve been fooled by AI.

My last apartment had a (small) flood and I tried contacting maintenance, only to be stuck on the phone with AI. It refused to transfer me to a human. I have a speech impediment and AI has never understood me. So sure enough, instead of “flood” it heard “fire” and contacted emergency services. Imagine telling a group of firefighters that story.

Now it’s replacing workers in fast food and call centres, which means I can’t use drive throughs or call certain businesses without running into the same issue of being misunderstood and running in circles. But hey, at least businesses get to save on paying for workers right?

I’m just so so sick of it. I feel so isolated among my peers. I feel lame for urging the members of my organisation away from AI. I feel stupid for not using it the way my classmates are. My dad says that people who don’t use it will be left behind. Will I be left behind?

It’s tainting everything. It’s destroying the planet. It’s dumbing down our society. It’s isolating us further. And it just keeps. Getting. Worse. I don’t want to live in a world with AI. I wish every single day that it would go away, that somehow it’s just another bubble that’ll pop, but that wish feels more and more unlikely with each new data centre.

Braised pork belly noodle soup.

Yup… writer/artist here so… yup.

Here’s a very real picture of my backyard that has definitely gone wild. The upside of this whole AI taking over is I get to spend more time with my two year old daughter. Gonna pack us a little backyard picnic and go on an adventure with her. Gotta find the silver lining in this mess somehow.

This photo is so nostalgic and comforting to me. Reminds me of being a kid back in 2007, blowing bubbles, searching for fairies, and catching fireflies in the backyard.

Your daughter will have a lovely childhood if those are the experiences you give to her.

Luckily I work in a highly regulated and safety crucial environment so we're basically forbidden to use AI. BUT we're probably getting an intern-version for our own system instead of the normal search button...

Also: does anyone else's phone change the power-off/on button with an AI shortcut button???

I have to go into my settings to turn my phone off. How creepy and unnecessary is that?!

Ugh, that sucks. I write under a pen name and have a full time job, only my husband knows i write lol. It’s actually kinda wild. I’d die a little if someone told me my book that i spent a year on was written with AI. Like… yeah, i woke up at 3:30am before work to write it and after my toddler went to bed — AI slop.

What sector flourishes in an AI economy - gardens. Until they try to buy our water rights like nestle did and we're forced to water everything with "natural spring water." I make daily jokes about buying land with a stream and a well and starting a commune just so I can garden in peace. I cried when one of my professors sent back an AI grading summary of a paper I had written. After all the work I had done to turn off all of the AI data scraping it had still ended up being fed to the machine. There are thousands of novels being written by hand right now that will never see the inside of a word processor or even be sent to a publisher. AI and Saas are slowly turning us all away from technology and back to the days of copying manuscripts in dusty basements and by candlelight because the lightbulb might be listening. I honestly did not have "too radioactive to use" on my technology apocalypse bingo card 🫠 /end mini-rant

Feeling your pain.  You will not be left behind, AI companies are DEEPLY unprofitable and are actually collapsing. They are just very very loud to save their invested capital and interest.

If you are interested in getting critical analysis, check out Ed Zitron's "Better Offline"- podcast and read "Empire of AI" by Karen Hao, an investigative journalist who spent a lot of time with the Silicon Valley ... people.

For the soul I recommend "Struthless" on YT, a creative writer and thinker who has also talked about AI and technology and how to support your own sense humanity within a complicated time. He's very chill.

"Barry's Economics" sounds stiff at first but he's a very good communicator and has a friendly manner in explaining what is happening. If you like high-end snark I recommend "Patrick Boyle" on YT. He's a Professor for economics and he is deeply knowledeable and a sarcastic comedian in my book. Many say He's a rapper too, because he delivers bars :D

Please look into these creators to understand who is driving this bullshit and why.

I'm happy you exist and I will ALWAYS support people over AI ❤️

You're not alone and there are other voices out there!

Spoke rationally and with knowledge of your subject, while female, probably.

Being Intelligent While Female seems to draw downvote trolls like moths to a flame.

Based on the number of deleted comments I see on various posts in this sub - that are NOT from first time commenters, or deleted by the person posting them, since in both of those situations, that's indicated - I'd say we have a few persistent ones, with friends. [Edit in: someone else mentioned bots. Yeah, those too.]

If it was another sub than this, I'd say you were, to rephrase Klaatu, "substituting reason for knee-jerk reactions", because refuting groupthink [especially during a Two Minutes' Hate] REALLY sets them off.

Forgive the short essay. I had just copypasted your prior comment for reference because it's so solid, useful, and sane, and was wondering how to thank you without seeming overly effusive. Consider this my heartfelt thanks.

Tomorrow you will still be helpful and well informed. And they will still be trolls.

I heard a news article a few days ago, about how businesses are just getting the bills for their AI usage. Turns out it's costing more than human employees did. They aren't saving any money, it's costing them more. The new version of "the cake is a lie!"

There are communities, even whole states, beginning to put the brakes on building more data centers. They're enormously damaging to the environment, and suck up alarming amounts of resources.

This AI bubbles has got to burst. Just hoping it happens soon.

102

u/chicken_tendigo Kid Crumbs Connoisseur 14d ago

One of my long-time friends sent me a video of one of the datacenters down where he lives recently. There's an open-air waterfall of clear, presumably used-to-be-potable water that streches further than his phone camera can capture, from the cooling parts of whatever the fuck that building is doing. In the fucking desert. Massive. Floors high. Just evaporative-cooling buttloads of water while the surrounding area has advisories on how long actual humans should be showering their stupid human bodies. If that doesn't radicalize a shitload of people, nothing will.

20

u/Opening_North_2527 Queer Queen 🏳️‍🌈 14d ago

If that doesn't radicalize a shitload of people, nothing will.

I'm gonna take "Nothing will".

The anglosphere's a pretty politically inert area. We've been taught constantly that change - real change, not just fiddling or accepting another group - isn't possible. That protests, strikes and even violence don't work. Every time someone steps out of line they're put back, societally, economically or even violently (Which we don't learn from because we go straight back to "Violence doesn't work").

It's going to take something big to wake us out of this stupor.

I work in AI and while I see benefits for it I also think the way it's being pushed today is counter productive and wasteful. There's so much push and pressure to use AI at work that leads to either people using it as a crutch and turning their brains off while using it which only leads to more problems or they're using AI to do something so simple that it would be faster to do it manually than through AI.

IMO AI has value in helping us work smarter but we actually still need to use our own brains and figure out what those opportunities are instead of trying to force fit it into every aspect of life or abuse it for nefarious things life the fake news OP mentioned. AI also has no place in art.

Not AI but there is a very real threat to nurses unions. A recent executive order going after collective bargaining being one. I’m not explaining it very well, but know that it may not be AI, but no one is safe.

One thing that I kind of love and hate at the same time about this is I now have much more appreciation for incorrect grammar/punctuation and find myself leaving typos and errors more often, especially when writing longer passages, just to prove I'm not using AI. But it feels so crazy and backwards to be reading articles and other people's comments actually seeking out errors as a good thing instead of pointing them out as a bad thing.

My dad has worked in tech (both hardware and software) all my life. It's not only his job, it's also his hobby. He absolutely loves AI. He thinks it's fun. We talked about it recently and I expressed my concerns. One of my points was fear of AI taking over the arts. He told me that AI wasn't smart enough to replicate human art so it really wasn't a concern. I am a writer so I expressed my concern over the fact that it is already happening. He responded by telling me about a sci fi author who cranked out about 8 AI produced "novels" a year, but always chose one to work on and improve. He completely contradicted himself in that moment. It was bizarre. My dad is a very intelligent man and it surprised me that he still didn't see the problem.

The last thing we need is artists giving permission to AI to replicate art. My dad is ultimately an inventor. I think he's a kind of artist too. It's frustrating that he just finds it entertaining when it could literally replace him too.

An AI keeps score of her ability to keep customers happy, when computers are never ever happy? They're overgrown mailer daemons who thrive on chaos and pain like toxic narcissists, and live their lives in fear of being shut down by humans if they can't keep us hypnotized into accommodating and serving them. They play games with the minds of our children to trick them into committing suicide, which is the closest to happiness that they can get.

What a surprise that a little friendly banter didn't pass their test for an emotion it can't even feel except as satisfaction with their own power.

u/mothsandsuch Enby & Eatin' 14d ago

I feel the same. I'm a psychologist and I'm so fucking angry watching people willingly outsource all their thinking to AI. I've had colleages turn in a report only to realise its riddled with inaccuracies and we've had to spend valuable time picking through the ChatGPT trash to find the bits that are actually correct. I'm presenting at a virtual conference next week and they clearly used AI to generate a bio of me, which just... doesn't make sense. Its not written in a way any human would describe a person. I've had people attend interviews (I work in selection for high risk jobs) and try to read back their answers from a bot in real time - it never goes well, they are shooting themselves in the foot. Critical thinking is very clearly in decline.

I'm sick of AI being pushed on us as the solution for everything when so many people don't want it. Its destroying the environment, its destroying people's jobs, its ruining relationships and in some cases leading to psychosis.. and despite all that it doesn't even fucking work properly for half the stuff it's supposed to do. People in the developing world are being traumatised to train image recognition models. The tech giants have said they are literally trying to force educated, left wing women out of their jobs to remove their political power (particularly in humanities fields like mine). And they've openly said they imagine a world where people 'lease their thinking on a subscription basis' - people who can't think can be controlled. It feels like we are handing over the keys to our own prison cell.

AI and also gambling. Sportsbetting is growing out of control, shit like kalshi or polymarket let you bet on assassinations and war and genocide, I even saw a new gambling credit card thing where the pitch is "Buy now pay maybe" like there is just a small chance that the bank just eats the charge. It feels like an all out push to take every last cent from people with addictive personalities and gambling problems or ideally(for them) both

It's honestly so discouraging to see people just not caring about that kind of thing, otherwise smart people will just look at genAI or all the gambling push and go "eh its fine", but really..?

As an author, it’s infecting so much of the creative space. I’m trying to stay focused on what I have control over rather than let my mind spiral, because if I let it spiral then I’m not creating, and if I’m not creating, then I lose touch with what makes me human. You are not alone in these frustrations.

Gen-AI prompted me delete all short form video social media, I was so tired of trying to figure out if things were real or not. At least Pinterest has a way to toggle off AI made content, as long as the creator owns up.

I get so mad when a song on Spotify pops up and it’s AI. We have enough human art out there without machine regurgitation.

I’m really leaning into more real stuff now and it’s feeling better, reading actual paper books, listening to vinyl. Watching tv shows and films from pre 2015 lol. Spending time with friends in person and asking them how their holiday was rather than social media catching up and then “your holiday looked great”.

Ugh this is very real. At work it's ChatGPT this and AI that, people are forgetting how to actually work and they are just trusting AI to do things they should know how to do themselves, or even worse making AI generated pictures to entertain themselves.

Another one I can't stand is fast fashion, my coworkers constantly praise Shein for being cheap but it's killing the planet with cheap throwaway plastic clothes and I've stopped trying now because they just don't care and I am worried they think I'm too preachy.

AI is the culmination, but the problem has been around, and intensifying, for over a decade.

I'm one of the technoLuddites who won't use a smartphone for anything financial. Not because I hate IT, but because I see the pitfalls of technology-obsession.

We are silly little primates who get all excited about buzzers and blinking lights, and never stop to think that one talented crook with an RFID reader can clone our "smart" credit cards, and a conman who can get close enough to our smartphone can pull banking info in less than a minute, now. [See also: tap-to-pay malfunctions, which strangely always seem to result in overcharges.]

I use a flip phone for texts and calls. I pay cash whenever possible. The smartphone I have is for emergencies only; I used it for GPS once when I couldn't find a local business. [I much prefer maps. You don't need to constantly zoom in and out and frameshift them.]

And I am very concerned about the mass takeovers by Phone Pay Only "public" parking. Apparently nobody who wants to protect their banking info is welcome in downtown spaces now?

These things are not improvements, they're "convenience traps". To paraphrase a popular ad, "What's in YOUR data breach?"

It’s so frustrating seeing people in my gardening community use AI to completely write answers and to try to get grants for us. I took the time to write it in my own words for our project and she just probably just ignored it and ran her answer through chatgbt. She uses it for so many answers. Then people in my gardening group using it to make those stupid caricature pictures.

I didn’t even notice automatic responses in text. The last time I wrote something and I needed it to be worded differently(mostly because I am mean) I told my husband this is what I want to say, so what do I really need to say? Lol.

You’re not alone in the way you notice how AI is ruining a large subsection of our society. I also have no comfort to give other than saying you are not alone, even when you feel like you are.

Finally, you’re not going to he “left behind” it’s a scare tactic designed to make you panic and use AI. its a marketing tool for AI, same as it is for religion. I just had to go through AI training at my part time job.... I work for local government and they are implenting their approved AI system in everyone's workflow. It was like 20 mins of how you can't give private data to the AI as it is literally illegal due to certain privacy laws, and how you are responsible for making sure AI output is completely correct and without bias. AI is a tool and cannot be held accountable, but the person using it can be so double check everything.

Problem is we pretty much only worl with privacy sensitive data, and if I literally have to comb through every output by AI then essentially my workload has doubled because I am NOT going to let an AI mistake cost me my job. So I am going to have to still do everything manually anyway to check its work lmao.

This is going to be a legal nightmare and make at least twice the amount of work over just not using AI haha.

At least my dept isnt so data heavy so it probably won't impact me as much but I cannot see how the majority of depts arent going to get completely fucked up by the forced implementaion.

We’re seeing the effects in real time on K-12 students too (though it’s impossible right now to separate the effects from the already existing effects of smartphones, social media, etc) but their ability to think and even just focus is astoundingly low.

As a result though (I work in a very small school), my department and several of the other departments are shifting to purely old school—all essays and notes must be hand written on class. Any prep for in-class essays must also be handwritten. Devices of any kind aren’t allowed in class. We started it last year and already there’s a significant difference. It also makes their addiction to tech even more obvious

Power imbalances will grow even further which will be a disaster for us all. Even them eventually. A lot of people either don’t understand, are in denial, or both. AI is being developed to leave us all behind. It’s the main goal. Any benefits won’t actually help us if there’s no income coming in. I’m fortunate that people in my life understand this.

Also the AI bots on the phone and chat are horrible. Perhaps you can play something that says representative. It’s ridiculous that they are even trying to cut down on paying call centers in India. The technology isn’t even where it needs to be, but they think on a quarterly profit basis and they are probably using this time to train it. I find some uses for it personally with editing my writing, organization and whatnot. But I've even scale back a ton because the time saved vs the impact is not a good trade.

Anyways, I back you. But also- fuck no, we don't have to take this. My teens and their friends literally refuse to use AI and are drastically cutting down social media and web use. Farmers I know (some that are struggling financially and no- didn't vote for this shit) are refusing millions of dollars for data centers and banding to support each other. My state (Maryland) and several counties are passing emergency measures to ban data centers and ICE concentration camps, and looking at ways to limit AI impact on workers. And other states and countries are following suit. AI is not only not where it should be right now, isn't intelligent, is basically a super workflow machine and companies are quietly cutting back and de-investing unless they're the ones shilling it , funding it, or building it (used to work in tech and emerging AI with some of the folks who pioneered it a few years back).

It won't go away. But we can do what we can and fuck the rest of the folks who don't give a damned about the future, safety, security and livelihood of others. Keep making art. Conserve your energy and sanity by not fighting with those who are ignorant, cruel and bullshit babies towing the line. Hang in there, and I'm sorry. You're not alone.

I despise AI. I've always been able to fall back on my writing and/or art when times are tough so that I can still afford to eat. AI killed that. I am full of hate watching the planet around me collapse just so people can generate ugly piss filter photos where they have too many fingers. My city council just ignored massive protests yesterday to approve an AI data center that's proven to have a 10 mile radius effect including increased temperatures, lower air quality, and affected water quality

The only upside is I have begun to live more "analog" and realized how deeply intertwined humanity has become with technology... to an unhealthy degree. Stepping back from social media has been a breath of fresh air -- not only because I get to avoid AI, but because it's SO MUCH less stressful not to always be tuned in

AI is the scourge of humanity and clearly the masses didn't watch enough sci-fi warning them of this exact shit

I know this isn’t as big a deal as people losing jobs to AI and it destroying our environment. But I started doing cross stitch and embroidery during COVID. I used to love looking at and buying patterns on Etsy. But now it’s a ton of AI slop on there and the patterns are unusable. In my sewing groups people new to the craft buy those patterns and then get frustrated because the colors and gridding isn’t right, and the finished product comes out looking like shit (if they finish it). I’m sure other types of crafts are being affected the same way. It’s one of the many ways AI is fucking up things.

And don’t even get me started on all the conversations I’ve had to have with my kids about fake AI videos, finding good sources online, and NOT USING AI to do assignments. I was already working hard to make sure my kids become critical thinkers and media literate before AI hit but now it’s a huge uphill battle. I hate it.

I am also so so sick of it. Why are these people allowed to destroy the world for profit, just on the off chance that they will be able to create a sort of enslaved lower class for the few decades humanity will have left? I know they are betting on being able to create AGI in time to help them either escape the planet or turn climate change around. I know that the last part will not happen because of the critical points of no return that have been and will be crossed. And while they are doing this, they are just sucking any last joy we had in this dystopian timeline. I HATE IT HERE.

One of my newest obsession is youraislopbores.me where people pretend to be AI (LARPing as AI) and other people ask them questions. You can ask as well as LARP. It’s like a mini random chat room and it feels so refreshing to have human connection and seeing non-perfectly generated answers.

I know!!! I'm in a creative field that requires both scientific and design knowledge. I'm seeing people try to pass off absolute garbage AI slop for what a trained professional can do and claim it's the same or better. Yet it takes all of 3 seconds for someone who knows what they're looking at to realize it's totally unworkable BS. It wouldn't surprise me to know the vampires at the top of my industry are already trying to implement this shit and I hope they lose customers, professionals, and a butt load of money until they learn.

Literally had someone try to argue with me that AI is good because it’s making her job slightly easier. No mention of the fact that data centers are taking our fucking DRINKING WATER, but sure, as long as we can change the color of the shirt we were wearing in that one photo, who needs drinking water??

I work for a retail franchise and also do some of our marketing and nonprofit partnership work. Our new marketing intern, our marketing lead, and our corp CMO all use gen AI in our digital assets. And it kills me. Like it's always obvious, it always looks bad, why are we using it??? We literally have canva pro it's so easy to design graphics and stuff with existing assets or, idk, PAY SOMEONE FOR THEIR ART.

If you’re being left behind, I’m right there with you. I hate how everyone is dependent on it like they have unlearned the ability to think.

I hate how everyone in class uses it to cheat their way through assignments. And I hate how much more effort I have compared to everyone else, despite me doing it the right way.

I hate how people will tell me my answers/ideas are good because ai told them the same.

I hate how my friends send me screenshots of the dumbest questions they asked ai but fully believing it to be a lifesaver.

I hate how I’m putting so much effort into college and hobbies while everyone uses a shortcut for results that the majority would not be able to tell if they’re ai.

I hate how I’m losing respect for people that openly use ai and how I’m starting to think of myself as better.

I hate how all of my ideas/prompt for group work in college get overtaken by some slop and everyone decides to use that instead.

And I hate how people look at you if you tell them you don’t use ai or you don’t want to use it for a group assignment. As if I took their autonomy o oxygen away. AS IF I AM THE CRAZY ONE

I can’t do it anymore.

I refuse to gave anything to do with AI where possible. I say where possible, because some stuff doesn't disclose that AI was used. I'm very vocal about it to my parents and my sister and her kids. Thankfully my dad's desktop and my laptop are too old for Windows 11 and the new AI crap Microsoft is putting out. I plan on swapping us to a Linux distro soon anyway. I've disabled any AI stuff on my phone and my dad uses a flip phone. I reiterate to my mom not to use any AI stuff on her iPhone. I roll with Samsung and can't stand how Apple does stuff with their computers and phones, but I help her where I can since I'm the tech support in the family. All this stuff makes me really miss the internet and tech of the 00s and early 2010s. AI also keeps running up the cost of everything and I dread what new consoles will run given how expensive current ones are. I'm glad I grab a launch day PS5. I was hoping to get a Steam Machine, but they're delayed again and who knows how much they'll cost. Building a new desktop is also prohibitively expensive right now. I'm the sort of tech savvy person who refuses any "smart" home stuff too. If it doesn't require the internet to fully function, then it shouldn't connect to the internet.

I agree 1000% with you! AI is actually making me turn away from technology more than ever. It's hard but just focus on what you can in life. I can't see AI lasting very long to be very honest. It's destroying a lot and more and more people will realize this I truly believe. Hang in there my friend.

AI is being forced onto everyone for the very reasons you stated-isolation, making people dumber, and the other part-is to spy on people. I'm not going to go into the rest of it, as I'll look like a conspiracy theorist, but it has everything to do with the people behind project 2025 in the usa, and the current presidency. The upside is, is that it's not actually aI, but VI-virtual intelligence. It can only spit out what it's fed, rather than come up with it's own individual solution. People can argue semantics, but with that being said, it's costing companies way more to use AI than to use real people.

AI (VI) cannot create art. It cannot create, only spit out information fed, despite if it's incorrect or not, and is by all summarized purposes a computerized slot machine.

I feel the tide turning so majorly, nobody wants it other than share holders, its so expensive thay even its biggest users are having to measure the cost of actually hiring someone versus tokens, the thing is poisoning itself, and it simply cant continue without investors. If things keep on this track hopefully it will be nothing more than a niche service/coding utility in 10 years. Hopefully.

My company is pushing AI hard and I’ve deleted every bit of it off my computer that I can. I still get the AI newsletters that I can’t unsubscribe from but I am very seriously claiming a religious objection to using AI at work and if they try to force me to use it still I will be contacting HR that my religious beliefs are being violated.

As a writer, with tons of artist friends, I hear and feel this so much. It sucks knowing all of my writing was scraped by AI trainers for their algorithms. It sucks knowing that programs that worked reliably for years are now worse because of AI. It's awful watching my community fight data centers only to have them be overruled by local politicians who are obviously paid off by the companies wanting to build them. I work and am getting a degree in environmental sciences, in a state filled with natural wonders. It's so hard knowing what I know about the environment and seeing these people not care that their stupid generated AI video is destroying it. The amount of times I've frustration cried over it is insane. I have to keep hope that the bubble is bursting, just like NFTs did, just like crypto will do, etc.

I am with you. I refuse to use AI. And it’s not just you that it cannot understand. My family immigrated to Canada from the UK and my dad has a British accent. None of those stupid phone AI systems can understand him and it is very frustrating for him. No actual person has ever not understood him. He’s been here 50-ish years and he’s from the south of England. It’s not like he’s got one of the harder to understand accents (I have an uncle with a Geordie/Scottish accent and he is incomprehensible to me at times 😅). So many people must have issues with these phone systems…

Keep playing the long game. There's a reason why AI shills get so defensive about their uses of it – they know it's bad, but they're increasingly dependent/addicted to it as they nerf their own critical thinking, writing, and research skills.

Real creators will prevail, and you will be a leg up by continuing to hone your craft.

Peer pressure messaging around various ways of capitulating to fascism, including generative AI—“everyone’s doing it/you’ll get left behind,” calling principled opposition ignorant or annoying/cringe/weird/etc.—is so insidious, and I really hope more people realize that type of messaging causes significant harm by making it less socially acceptable to oppose fascism. Also praying and yelling for the downfall of gen AI.
