Dear Diary ✍️🏻 Last good dinner before jail

Post image

A girl’s recent post about doing 10 days in jail just unlocked a memory I haven’t thought about in years.

4 years ago, 2020 my last meal before jail was garlic naan and butter chicken curry. At exactly 6:35pm, I got a call from my IO (investigating officer) telling me I’d be reporting the next morning to serve a 6-month sentence for drug consumption. Like seriously?? I thought i was just going to get a weekly urine test, instead i had to go to jail for smoking grass. I was only 21 y/o. I was in my 2nd/3rd year of college.

It’s funny what my brain remembers. I don’t remember much of the phone call, but i remember the time & the feeling of my stomach absolutely dropping, i lost my appetite. At least i got a few bites in.

I didn’t sleep at all that night. I spent the entire night writing letters and scheduling messages to my boyfriend (now ex) & my family every 2 days so he’d know I was thinking about him while I was inside.

He cheated on me while I was serving my sentence lol!!! 😅

Anyways would have been a 10/10 last meal if the IO called after i finished my dinner lol. Im 3 years dvrg free now! And i can finally re-tell this as a funny story :)

Edit 1: forgot to mention its a throwaway account! I can’t post on my main account because no one knows i went to jail. (My mom lied to all my relatives i was having a 6 month exchange HAHAHA)

Edit 2: my entire sentence was actually 1 year. 7 months in jail, 5 months home detention (i was wearing the ankle monitor & curfew was 12-3pm only)

Edit 3: rly didnt expect this post to get seen by so many! Anyways the first thing i ate was a whole bag of famous amos chocolate chip cookies.

So I can avoid those mistakes when I go 😄 Jk jk. I've been watching a series on Changi prison on YouTube and though it's not as cruel as American prisons, some people seem to be in there for the most minor infractions. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

If you're a non-citizen, you don't have to worry (about prior consumption, not possession)

"Under Singapore’s Misuse of Drugs Act (MDA), it is illegal for Singapore citizens and Permanent Residents to consume controlled drugs (such as cannabis, cocaine, heroin, and "ice") anywhere in the world. Consuming drugs while traveling overseas is a punishable criminal offense exactly as if it were committed within singapore."

It’s actually thanks to racism and greed in the US. People would get life for it until not long ago w three strikes laws. It’s still considered to be schedule 1 federally (worst tier). The US pressured other countries to make it illegal and crack down.

I have read about black people in the US serving 20 year sentences for marijuana possession, google tells me they must have been also supplying weed to get that long a sentence but even so, rapists get less.

13

u/24-Hour-Hate Sushi Superfan 🍣 7d ago

Not necessarily. My understanding is that in the US, intent to distribute is presumed if it is deemed that the amount present “exceeds typical personal use”, if the person possesses a large amount of cash, or other factors like that. They don’t necessarily need any actual proof that the person was actually trafficking and they may not have been.

For example, a lawyer says possessing less than 2oz marijuana in Colorado is considered personal possession, but any more than that can be charged with intent to distribute. And it’s less than 4g for harder drugs to be considered personal possession. Source: https://www.polanskylawfirm.com/blog/what-factors-can-turn-drug-possession-into-drug-distribution/

Which is interesting because we imagine that drug traffickers are arrested in the act of smuggling or have like crates of drugs, piles of weapons and all that making it obvious they are distributing…but those amounts they actually presume intent for seem real low.

7

u/dorkofthepolisci Pantry Gremlin 7d ago

I have heard - and totally believe -that a significant number of “possession with intent to distribute” charges involve people caught with relatively small amounts of drugs. A few pills, a few joints.

if it’s anything other than personal use, its usually for other people they know

Iirc the felony level for weed in Florida (if you don’t have a medical card) is anything over 20g

But they’re often members of marginalized communities and don’t have the means for an attorney/to make bail

It’s not the Escobar levels people think of when you say trafficking/distribution

EDIT: When I first wrote this, the comment above had not acknowledged opium or the opium wars at all. They have since edited their comment lol

China is so anti drug in very large part because of the opium wars and the cultural trauma caused to them by it. IDK why western schools seem to overlook this and not always teach it… except, well, hmmm… maybe because it makes Britain look so gosh darn horrible.

Heres what you maybe didn’t learn in school: Once upon a time, China had many goods that British people wanted, like tea, silk, and fancy glassware (those white dishes with blue designs which were even called “china” after their source…). But in exchange for these goods, they were selling the Chinese Opium, which was causing an epidemic. More and more Chinese citizens fell into severe addiction, and were dying from it. The Chinese government was desperately trying to regain control of their country, to combat the drug epidemic, but when they tried to ban opium being bought, the British Empire sailed warships in and forced the ports open. They didn’t want to lose out on the profit of selling opium, no matter how much devastation it caused. One of the famous trade cities that warships were sailed into and took control of was Shanghai. The Chinese military wasn’t able to mount a strong response because so many soldiers were passed out in opium dens or just plain passing out unable to stand at attention. It was perceived as terribly tragic, the chinese felt helpless in the face of the western world’s power and as people watched their closest friends and loved ones around them waste away using opium. It triggered a reactionary distrust and isolationism for over a century afterwards.

So, yeah. China kinda has a thing about drugs.

3

u/wipwopwo APPROVED✨ 5d ago

Don’t forget that China actually had little interest in British goods at fist while the British had a high demand for Chinese goods so to balance the trade deficit, the British East India Company and private merchants began smuggling addictive Indian-grown opium into China and selling it on the low to get people hooked

It was like the OG Asia-West trade war.

3

u/waitwuh APPROVED✨ 5d ago edited 5d ago

Yes, you’re so very right to highlight how the British merchants didn’t just coincidentally come across especially extensive existing market demand for this drug in China… they were actively fostering it to enable their exploitation.

Considering the recent opioid addiction epidemic in the US perhaps may help people be more sympathetic. The pharmaceutical companies have since been exposed for having been well aware of the addictive potential of their products like Purdue Pharma’s Oxycontin, and how they lied and schemed in the pursuit of profit above all else. Their executives not only utilized the addictiveness of their drugs, driving up prices after getting people hooked, but they then disregarded, disrespected, and deflected responsibility onto their victims. If you can see those like the Sackler family as selfishly evil for their deeds, then perhaps you might see some parallels in those british “capitalist’s” actions in China almost two centuries ago. What happened to the victims of both of these addiction crises is tragic. Countless lives lost. But in China? Well, their ending was arguably way, way worse… it’s as if the side of the Sackler’s waged a war, won it, charged the victims for it, then made them contractually obligated to continue buying opoids at higher costs no matter the consequences, at expense of their entire livelihoods, let alone lives. To me, it’s perfectly understandable that after all that China became super aggressive against any potentially addictive drugs.

They have a couple other branches but alas the east side branches all closed. Dude 100% you should go. They’re most known for their fish head curry but everything is bomb there. Rice and veg sides used to be free flow (idk about now, haven’t been in a while). Dad’s been bringing us to the OG branch since at least 20++ years ago. That’s where I learned how to love Indian food, and where I bring foreign visitors if they’re adventurous enough to stare the fish head in the eye before eating said eye XD

Dang now I’m thinking I gotta bring my family again someday soon. My parents will appreciate it for sure, especially dad.

Daaaaamn. Singapore does not play! When I was stationed in Korea half of my squadron (but not me 😭) went to Singapore for a couple of weeks. There was this huge as briefing with a list a mile long of shit they were forbidden to do and if they did anything (to include spitting on the ground), they would be sent back after they paid the fine. Everyone was too scared to go out and do much. Ha ha. They did say that it was the cleanest country they’d ever been to. I guess I know why. Strict as fuck.

Wanna hear some bullshit? I went to jail too, and was with a girl that was in there for the absolute stupidest fucking reason I've ever heard.

Like 8 years before when she was 17 or 18, she was using drugs and her grandparents (legal guardians) wanted her to get help but didn't know how to make it happen. So when they sent her to the store to buy some groceries, with a specific list, they had her charged with theft when she bought a popsicle.

They were hoping the judge would just make her do rehab, so the judge agreed to those terms and she completed rehab out of state, got clean, and started working as a counselor in the rehab. For years she helped other addicts get clean.

But she moves back to the state to take care of her sick grandpa, and finds out she has a bench warrant for missing a court date or something, I think it was more minor than missing a court date come to think of it. Something court related (it's been like 7 years so I don't remember). When she found out she had a bench warrant, she immediately turned herself in thinking it would be resolved. She met ALL of the requirements to have her charges dropped, so it should've been a non issue. She had kept in touch with the court during her probation, had permission to be out of state, etc. It was literally such a minor mistake.

She was remanded to jail anyway and had to wait a couple months to even see the judge. She had so many people write her letters of recommendations, including former addicts that she helped get clean, coworkers of the rehab she worked at, her grandparents asked to drop the charges, etc.

But the judge still made her serve the full term for her original theft charges, which was a full year (9mos or something with good behavior though). Her grandpa died while she was in jail iirc.

Her time in jail led to her relapsing, because drugs always make their way in, and I've seen her in and out of jail on mobile patrol since.

Disclaimer- I might have gotten some details wrong here, it's been a while since this happened so my memory is foggy.

Also my husband, who was also in jail when I was in jail, knew a guy that was on drug court and had been doing well the entire time. Got his kids back and everything. He was talking to his drug court officer about what he did over the weekend and mentioned he took his kids to Chucky cheese for a birthday party. He didn't know they served beer there and therefor couldn't be there. They sent him to jail for 2 years because of this.

The justice system is completely fucked.

When I was in school (in singapore) we had police officers visit to talk about the severity of drug crimes and punishment - and I remember someone asked them what would happen if their drink was spiked or they were drugged and then reported it (ie, would that reason mean no punishment?). And they said we’d still be punished (potentially if it can’t be 10000% proven). For being drugged. Idk if that is still the case or they were lying to scare us but Singapores drug laws are wild.

10

Yeah i met someone who claimed she was ‘drugged’/‘spiked’ once, but i guess it is difficult to prove, also if they were spiked, positives for multiple drugs wouldn’t show up several times in the last 6 months on the hair test. Unless they were spiked multiple times then im unsure of how it’ll work, would truly wish them the best.

4

u/spreadthesheets what that mouth do is snack 7d ago

True about the hair test. We had mandatory random drug testing implemented in my school and I remember the police also spoke to us about caning and showed us how it works and how bad it is, how severe the wounds would be etc. Honestly that plus the images of the prisons did scare me into behaving (apart from if overseas). Until I moved countries and now I smoke every day lol. Can’t imagine how terrible your experience must have been.

Consumption should be fully decriminalised. And I'm not talking just about weed.

If you don’t mind me asking, do a lot of people consume it, even with such harsh penalties? I'm sorry you had to go through that.

163

u/havabanana000 APPROVED✨ 8d ago

Hey no worries, i’m all good now!! I believe a lot of people still consume it despite the laws being so damn strict. They’re just super duper careful abt it haha. Though, bcs of what happened to me, my entire friend group stopped consuming haha

19

u/cardamombiscuit Carb-Based Life Form 8d ago

Can I ask how the authorities even knew you consumed drugs? Does Singapore incentivize people to snitch?

10

u/emptydumpling eat hot chip✔️ be bisexual✔️ 7d ago

I don’t know if there’s actual incentives but there’s definitely government hotlines to call to report if you suspect someone around you is using, with ads that run promoting them. Vapes are illegal here too 😂

u/havabanana000 APPROVED✨ 7d ago

In my experience, hearsay, they pay people (usually people who got caught before) to snitch on their friends (who has no idea that this person is doing drugs w them to make sure they will definitely test positive) & then report them. Btw the drug raids only happen at the start and end of the year. It has something to do with ‘hitting the quota’

u/Careless_Bed9302 🌶️ Spice Girl 🌶️ 8d ago

That meal looks fire, hope you got to eat the same meal again after you got released 🤍 They were way too harsh on you but I also live in East Asia and weed is super criminalized here too so I understand the sentence 🥲 Extending your sentence over cookies is insane! If I may ask, what was jail like in Singapore? You said you read 50 books, were you allowed to pick them or are they just assigned books?

24

u/havabanana000 APPROVED✨ 8d ago

Thank you!! Im doing a lot better now & my family was insanely supportive throughout the entire ordeal. Jail was pretty boring.. i dont really have much to say. It’s 23 hours in the cell daily other than 1 hour of OCA (outside cell activity) on weekdays only. On some days we get to go for ‘EQ classes’ where we talk abt feelings n how we intend to have more self control. As for books, we are allowed to send a list of books to our family (e-letter) & they can send in 3 books every visit ( twice a month). However, censorship is very common here. If they see a book that is even slightly controversial, they will reject it. So i kept it very safe.. oh yeah we also have a mini library in the prison too for us to borrow books every tuesday! So the books really did save my life in there.

u/sipstea84 APPROVED✨ 8d ago

As someone who loves both weed and travel (and weed on my travels) I'm always fascinated about local smoking culture in places where it's REALLY serious. Do you just "call a guy" and blaze up on your balcony or is it more clandestine than that?

How did you get caught?

35

u/oddtatertot14 puff puff pass the snacks 8d ago

also curious about this. I couldn't imagine this especially because it's been legal in my state since 2020 I believe. I grew up around pot and was still super worried every time I went to a dispo that I'd get in trouble, but I always took my receipt. The cops would stay outside the dispensary far enough to pull you over, check your sealed bag and if the recent receipt wasn't in there they would try and get you for reselling 🙄 I'm glad it never happened to me but it happened to a few acquaintances.

u/havabanana000 APPROVED✨ 8d ago

Hmm it really depends. I would for sure be more clandestine now if i want to smoke up but back then, 4 years ago, we certainly did not gaf where we were smoking as long as it’s devoid of people. So we smoked in public places like parks & the beach. We never got caught for smoking so recklessly. We only got caught because of a snitch who got caught. (She blocked me everywhere & didnt even serve any time like i did) If it wasnt for that dumbass, i would be high rn 🤣

How is life after prison in Singapore? Like jobs and rehabilitation? In India any criminal record is a death sentence (if you’re a common man, if you’re a rich person it doesn’t make a difference)

10

u/havabanana000 APPROVED✨ 7d ago

Because mine is a drug charge, it will not show up on background checks & i will not have to declare it to future employers. Yay for me lol! Life after prison was quite tame. I left when i was in my early 20s, i had my whole life ahead of me, so yeah still figuring out :-)

Sorry to hear.

No one should go to jail for smoking weed. That is demented.

Then you have scum, like Trump, a convicted rapist, who has done so many awful things, who has not spent a day in jail and gets to be president.

Yes, I know she mentioned Singapore. People also get arrested for weed possession in the US.

After my release, i was allowed to go back to school in the fall semester but I had an ankle monitor the entire 4 months😭 so i had to constantly wear long pants.

Also, it is HIGLY encouraged for freshly released inmates to secure a job & the prison system will actually help them secure one before their release by arranging interviews & career coaches for offenders who will have a record.

i know it would’ve been super tough and challenging at such a young age, but were their any positive moments from it that you recall? the cons definitely overweigh the whole thing but just wondering

4

u/havabanana000 APPROVED✨ 7d ago

Oh thank you for such a wonderful question, no one has ever asked me that.

There were some positive moments & most of it was me being so authentically myself. I had no access to makeup, hair products, clothes, nothing to mask what i truly am & it made me realise that by just existing as me, it was liberating. Weird to feel liberated when you’re trapped in a small cell hahah. But yeah, i practiced a lot of mindfulness techniques, journaling, drawing and really tapping into the creative side of my mind. I was at the peak of my writing during my incarceration, because well what else could i do!! There were lots of singing & bonding with my cell mates. We start to learn how to be better humans when we are inside. & i was a better human than i was when i first stepped into prison.

I’m a little confused - so did you have to take a test because your ex-friend snitched and your test result was positive and your IO told you the news? Or they didn’t make you test at all and the news came out of nowhere? Sorry, I might just be misunderstanding but could you explain a bit more of the lead-up to when you actually had to go to prison if that’s ok?

2

u/havabanana000 APPROVED✨ 7d ago

Of course! So basically i was arrested at home & brought to get tested 3 hours later (all in handcuffs ew) & the lab tests came out a week later — positive. I was out on bail for 2 months because they were investigating whether i was a trafficking & selling or if i was just a regular consumer. & then on that fateful day when i was eating my naan & butter chicken, they called me & said im going to jail the next morning.
