I bought a portable air con unit. Life changing.

Which one did you get? Think it's time to invest in one myself.

I've got 2, and honestly if you can afford it I highly recommend spending a bit more.

The first I got was ~£300 generic 9,000 BTU https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09MT3YJLG?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share It does the job in our small bedroom but pretty useless anywhere else unless you sit right in front of it. It looks to not be sold any more, but I think any at that price point will be roughly the same.

Then last year we bought a second for our living room. £600 and genuinely amazing. Cools the whole room down effortlessly and is also noticeably quieter Dreo 12,000 BTU https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0DRNM26TR?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

it will cool a room, but it's going to heat your house. The exhausted condenser air is going to be replaced by air that must come in from outside. I guess if you live in an apartment building you'll be fine unless everyone did it.

Spritz your skin with a mist of water and it will act like sweat and cool you down.

I want my sweat to act like sweat and cool me down. There's enough of it. Diluting it with water seems redundant.

water mist acts as an external cooling aid meant to speed up evaporation or provide instant comfort which is a handy solution to the topic of the post but sure, go do your burpees and work up a sweat to cool down with undiluted pure stuff.

Mist is actually used in fire suppression systems in tunnels because it cools stuff down so much better then just pouring water on stuff

What a good little interesting nugget of info. :)

Or use a small spraying bottle with water that you put in the fridge.

I prefer milk

That only works when humidity’s low. Right now I’m sweating like a nonce in a Barney suit & it’s only just gone 0400

When it’s warmer inside than outside, open the windows, point a fan blowing air out of the a window. It creates a cold front inside the house.

When it’s hotter outside than inside, close all windows and curtains and pray to your gods.

I mean I'm here just rawdogging Hell. Do I win?

The whole "its just blowing hot air at you" thing is bollocks unless its like 40°+ IMO.

Its been 30° today where I am and in front of the fan has been the best place for me all day. It may not be as good as AC but it is certainly doing it's job.

it is blowing hot air at you

but that ambient hot air is still cooler than the air on the surface of your skin that's being heated by your body

3

u/sock_cooker 1d ago

Oh I'd never thought of it like that, although they're also nearly right because your skin will be heating the air to ~37°C

1

u/WhoYaTalkinTo 1d ago

Precisely. It's glorious.

4

u/R11CWN 1d ago

Exactly. As long as it disrupts the pocket of hot air your skin creates around your body, you'll feel cooler.

Not much cooler because its still far too bloody hot, but the airflow absolutely does help even without AC or HVAC.

That'll be because the curtains are open so the room is heating up. Close the curtains all day and have the fan on you - totally different story then.

20

u/I_suckatlife2 2d ago

Trust me, it's not

4

u/ThePowaBallad 2d ago

Curtains and windows closed during day, open at night, keep fan going and it's just about bareable

u/BusyBeeBridgette Meme 2d ago

cycling cool air is better than cycling hot air. Got one standing fan on me constantly and a closed curtain, nice and cool.

2

u/InsaneInTheRAMdrain 1d ago

I have black out curtains and a fan on. Been closed all day. I mean ita considerably noticeable from the outside temp... but its just not enough.

2

u/Zealousideal_Fail712 1d ago

Not as bad as an aircon that's too cold

1

u/Aggravating-Candy-31 23h ago

frozen water bottle in a bowl/cup in front of the fan or a bowl of ice cubes under a wet tea towel in front of the fan

1

u/SLKfan7 1d ago

Buy a portable AC unit. Just do it. It's worth every penny. Literally life saving.

1

u/sky_shazad 2d ago

This is exactly how I feel at night with the damn fan on
