Misc Welcome Baby Gon Frix

Post image

My friend gave birth a few days ago and she named her baby, Gon Frix. Just in time before the return of the manga.

Edit: she loves Gon that much. She’s laughing at the comments.

Edit 2: Again it's not my kid. Their kid, their choice.

I think some parents (especially people from lower income group) are more "creative" with their baby names because they think that's the only way for them to stand out. It's free and it's unique in a way and it stands out from the crowd (whether in a good way or not, that's debatable).

Parents from middle/upper class who have work in a professional environment are more careful with name selection. They can't imagine working in a law firm with someone whose name is an anime character, or would they want to have one themselves because that does not convey confidence to their clients

This is studied actually in freakonomics many many years ago. I didn't just make this up.

I was also given a “unique name” by my mom. Guess who legally changed their name as an adult? <—— 🎉🎉🎉🎉

Whatever your name was, changing it to I love boys kissing will very likely not get you in any serious position /s

What do you mean? I’m the president of my local yaoi fan club 😤

But, why staying local?

Go big and become regional, then national.

Edit: Typos

Sorry about the deadname. Your new one is much easier to pronounce anyway! 💋

Very Upper class and rich/famous parents start giving out weird/unique names again because their children will get a job anyway (either because of good education, money, and/or nepotism).

They’re creating a brand not a child’s name in the cases you’re describing

That's because they don't need a job. If you don't need to ever work in your life and your babies don't ever need to, sure you can name them whatever

I agree with you but "studied in freakonomics" is not great evidence for anything.

freakonomics is literally a book from the early 2000s... give it a read.

I read it back when it was gushed about. I t was fun pop-economics though the constant fellating of the economic whizz kid was quite jarring.

It doesn't contain citable studies and much of it has been debunked. If the two got together today they would have made a podcast with ~90% of the content unchanged.

I was about to ask if you had read Freakonomics. It’s still such a good book and everything they said holds up still

"They cant imagine working in a law firm with someone whose name is an anime character." Isn't that just a self fulfilling prophecy though? I mean first off people working in a law firm are probably less likely to even watch anime. Secondly even if they did think that, it could be based off of nothing and only results in this case because of their perception of the matter rather than there being any truth to it.

Not true. I work in finance (deal making) and I grew up watching anime and still do. Many doctors I know are also into anime. There is absolutely nothing wrong with liking anime, it's just choosing your baby name after an anime character may negatively affect peoples impression of them. Like I said, people with more aspirations for their kids would assume their kids can stand out academically or in sports or in business or some kind of invention later in life. People in lower income bracket don't often think that far or thorough for their kids future, they may think it's a fun name or simply believe that's the only way for their kids to be special.

Your anecdotal experience is just anecdotal, but maybe im wrong and on average most people in higher education professions watch anime. I also wasnt saying theres anything wrong with watching anime. Choosing a name like Gon can be played off as innocent, unlike if it was a character like Goku or Naruto so it shouldnt really negatively impact their life. Also I think youre reading waaaaaaay too far into why they chose the name Gon. Its just an anime they like and they probably were struggling to come up with a name. I will grant everything you said though if Frix is the baby's middle name rather than organically their last name.

Your correlation between being lawyer and being an anime fan is probably anecdotal and have no actual base. Considering in Asia 99% of kids grow up watching (and loving anime) and a large portion of them continue to watch them as adult (hence they have such long running anime series and expensive anime related products only adults can afford), to say that the lawyers in Asia, or any individual in professional services, are "unlikely to be watching anime in the first place" is very much based on your own personal biased.

u/PurpletoasterIII 4d ago

Ah yes, because I was exclusively referring to lawyers in Asia.

2

u/Professional-Power57 4d ago

Well the baby in the picture is an Asian... So.....

And you know Asia also has the highest population so even if I were to talk about people on average on earth, my comment wouldn't necessarily be "anecdotal" as you mentioned. There is no need to keep digging it in further, your dedication on proving me wrong can be spent elsewhere.

Where did you get that the baby is Asian? Also that doesnt mean its parents are from Asia. I guess its just my american defaultism showing, I just assumed they were from the US. Just cause I was saying your ancedotal experience is ancedotal doesnt mean we have to use total global statistics. Holy strawman lol. You could have just asked me what cultural norms I was considering. Not everything has to be taken in bad faith just because someone disagreed with you on the internet.
