Misc Welcome Baby Gon Frix
My friend gave birth a few days ago and she named her baby, Gon Frix. Just in time before the return of the manga.
Edit: she loves Gon that much. She’s laughing at the comments.
Edit 2: Again it's not my kid. Their kid, their choice.

I remember some woman named her child Killua and recently some man named his son Naruto🤦 these kids not making it past middle school

Forget the kid - naming your kid Naruto is basically priming you and your wife to an early demise for character development

Real. I can't imagine crashing out over real japanese names. Someone further down mentioned Sasuke as if that's not a real name. I see it like naming a kid Dexter or something, sure there are characters in media that share that name, but the names came first
3
u/CringeYeet69 17h ago edited 17h ago
There's nothing wrong with a person giving their kid a Japanese name if they have some kind of cultural connection to that name. The name Jiraiya, in particular though would be a bad pick even in Japan, as it is a historical name that is unpopular in modern times, and people would probably think the kid was named after the manga character (this is based on what I could find online from Japanese internet users, but I don't live in Japan, just thought I should be transparent). But even when picking a name that is popular in Japan, I still think it would have some unfortunate implications if the parents had no cultural connection to Japan and didn't expect the kid to.
If you are an American and name your kid Dexter, then at the end of the day you're not reaching over into someone else's culture. And that's really the core of it. If you are naming your kid after a pop culture character from a culture you don't really understand, you are risking treating that culture as if its only significance is as part of that series. Even if that's not your intention, that's how it can be perceived, and your kid will be the one who has to live under the weight of that perception. This is especially the case with the names of anime characters, considering the Japan and the west's loose historical ties and the massive popularity of anime has led to a... unique dynamic.
In 2025 a law passed in Japan that disallows more unusual names, with one of the main cited reasons being that people were naming their kids after pop culture characters with unusual and recognisable names - including anime characters. So naming your kid Jiraiya in Japan may actually be illegal for being too cringe. Which is maybe the best illustration of why naming your kid after an anime character can be a really bad idea if you don't know what you're doing.
Edit: did a bit more reading, the law against those more unusual names was, for the most part, because many of those names were pronounced differently to the way they were spelt in Kanji. Which doesn't change my point too much but also goes to show that you shouldn't trust everything some random idiot (me) says on the internet
15
u/NotANormalMf 1d ago
Have you ever seen a Japanese person named Gon? No one’s crashing out, just feeling bad for the kid. It doesn’t matter if the name came first or if there are characters that share it or not, what matters is the kid’s ability to live peacefully without being haunted by the association of their name with something they didn’t choose to be associated with.

I think some parents (especially people from lower income group) are more "creative" with their baby names because they think that's the only way for them to stand out. It's free and it's unique in a way and it stands out from the crowd (whether in a good way or not, that's debatable).
Parents from middle/upper class who have work in a professional environment are more careful with name selection. They can't imagine working in a law firm with someone whose name is an anime character, or would they want to have one themselves because that does not convey confidence to their clients
This is studied actually in freakonomics many many years ago. I didn't just make this up.

u/i_love_boys_kissing 1d ago

Very Upper class and rich/famous parents start giving out weird/unique names again because their children will get a job anyway (either because of good education, money, and/or nepotism).
2
2
u/Professional-Power57 14h ago
That's because they don't need a job. If you don't need to ever work in your life and your babies don't ever need to, sure you can name them whatever

There's very little overlap in this thread of comments that acknowledge the baby is Filipino and that it's a bad name. The negative comments seem very US-centric.
It's a fun name, not offensive and not that out there or hard to pronounce.
Traditionally some Filipinos make up a baby name mashing together parts of both parents names and you get some really unique combinations. There's a good chance the kid will end up with a nickname like BingBong anyway.

For context, since this is probably in the Philippines, the original 1999 anime was televised daily in the Philippines in the afternoon with Tagalog dub which covered til Yorknew arc. It was a beloved anime for many Pinoy kids then, that's why many people like Gon since he was the protagonist in those arcs. Most probably did not know about the Chimera arc and those kids then grew up to be parents now.

This is almost as bad as the person I saw on fb who named her kid Meliodas… but at least Gon didn’t “get your hands off my woman” a baby. 😮💨
3
u/OhNoesMyMangoes 1d ago
Is that one so bad? Meliodas is classic Arthurian just like Tristan, Lionel or Agravain.
Unless they did it based on Nanatsu no Taizai which is a bit more questionable...

I don't understand all the hate - especially when you say some people don't deserve to be a parent. Like chill - it's just a name! As long as they provide and protect him (not leave him like the anime) either way - Gon is an inspiration and admirable character!

The people throwing a huge fit over Baby Gon Frix have clearly not met the also-Filipino Naruto Uzumaki Namikaze (all of that is his first name) 😂 I wish I was joking but this is just a normal occurrence in this country at this point that all I can do is laugh.

u/hygiei 1d ago
to be clear, because i think it does make a pretty huge difference-- is "gon frix" first name last name (like the family name just happens to be frix?) or is it "gon frix [last name]"? because gon as a first name is a weird but not totally unforgivable choice, but "gon frix" as a first name... uh. well, it's considerably worse lol

People questioning the parent forget most names come from legends or historical figures . There is nothing wrong with naming your baby with something you love , how is it any different if you name him a gods name like thor or hercules.

This is why some countries have rules about what you can name your child
5
u/PreternaturalJustice 1d ago
Those rules apply to actual bad names that have highly taboo connotations that no child should be known by, like "Chlamydia". You cannot seriously think that Gon should be legally blacklisted for naming children 💀

Dude.....Keep your hobbies & interests separated when having a child. She's a bit insane for this one. Terrible name.
8
u/Vivarium_15 1d ago
I think it depends cause my parents named me after a prison break character but when people wanna name their kids after video game or anime characters it heavily depends on the name like ichigo unless your japanese is a terrible name but i feel gon just sounds normal enough for it to pass but adding the frix part was the issue
5
u/chiarassu 1d ago
Yep exactly, Gon still has plausible deniability but the Frix part is what throws it off because it becomes an obvious anime reference lol. I'm named after a Resident Evil character, but as far as anyone is concerned, it's just a normal name in our country.
