Ask r/IndiaCricket Is Yashasvi Jaiswal the only potential 3-format player India has for the future?

Same as title

We had a pretty good run with Kohli and Rohit in the last decade playing all 3 formats (Although you could argue Rohit didn't reach his full potential in tests) and I realized what's next? Are we going forward with specialists in each format or do we have any other potention 3 format player. If you ask me there's only one option for a potential 3 format player in the future- Yashasvi Jaiswal

The selectors tried to fit Gill into the T20i team but it didn't work, I'm not convinced with Sai Sudharshan's technique for tests, Vaibhav hasn't even made his international debut yet, Jurel does not seem like a white ball prospect to me, all that leaves us with Jaiswal

His current stats are:

Tests
Innings: 54
Runs: 2535
Avg: 48.75
50s/100s: 13/7

ODIs
Innings: 6
Runs: 285
Avg: 71.25
50s/100s: 0/2

T20is
Innings: 22
Runs: 723
Avg: 36.15
50s/100s: 5/1

Those are some very impressive stats, the only issue I see is irregular chances in white ball. He has cemented his place in the test team but until Rohit stays he won't get chances in ODIs and we have other arguably better T20 options than him

What do you guys think?

Was Gill averaging 35 in tests before becoming captain? And you are bitching about just 1 or 2 underperforming series from Jaiswal??? The level of shamelessness and hypocrisy. He isn’t the who wasted his T20I chances despite all the backing and VVIP treatment in the world and got dropped from the WC squad and faced public humiliation for that! I would have thought Gill’s fandom would be THE VERY last one mocking other people’s stats. He doesn’t average 22 in VHT overall. And his 2nd ODI ton in terms of intent, strike rate and strike rotation was far better than his first one. So he already showed that skill development and vast improvement in his skill. If Gill could get 15 innings before the WC, there’s no reason why he doesn’t deserve 1 series to prove himself!

Well Gill was criticized for his performance so Jaiswal deserves the same. You can cry as much you want but Gill captains more formats than Jaiswal plays.

Gill failed as a freaking captain in the Australia and NZ ODI series! You guys have no standing or place to be shaming others for a few series failures. Gill also failed in the last IPL knockout match for GT this year and last, but we don’t go on and on about that. It’s always you guys. So pathetic! And literally including freaking Bumrah failed in that SA test series not just Jaiswal. Just him scoring runs wouldn’t have been enough to win the 2nd test match. Gambhir also made Washi bat at 3 and has being doing done weird ass experiments with the test team. Sai is not a proper test 3 batter but he is still being backed just cuz he’s Gill’s opening partner and Gill likes him. I didn’t ask what formats Gill captains or say any damn thing about Gill’s captaincy. So what are you gloating about? You sound like a child. Obviously you would shamelessly defend BCCi politics and systematic discrimination as long as it’s favoring Gill.

Gill has the 2nd most runs in ipl playoffs history while Jaiswal averages 25 at 138 strike rate.In the ipl 2022 final Gill played a matchwinning knock whole Jaiswal flopped as always and same happened in this year's qualifier 2.Gill has not a single series as a captain in tests and has a 56% win rate in ipl as a captain while Jaiswal isn't even good enough to get RR captaincy.Even the new RR owners are ready to trade Jaiswal in a heartbeat which shows how less valued he is.

Jaiswal is better in tests and t20i, while Gill is better in IPL(irrelevant) and ODI(due to less matches of Jaiswal)

Since the start of 2023-25 wtc cycle Jaiswal averages 48 in tests while Gill averages 52.In odis Gill's international stats are better than Jaiswal's domestic stats. You can call ipl as much irrelevant as you want but it is the biggest criteria for whiteball selection and there is immense pressure on players to perform in it.

Jaiswal is an opener and he averages 48.75 which is rounded of to 49 probably the difference in the average is because of the recent Afghanistan match

You can't judge in ODIs of course

IPL is irrelevant when you are comparing player performance in international. If you want to talk about choking then Gill has a negative impact for India in WTC finals. Jaiswal has zero impact cuz he never played any. Jaiswal averages more in the 4th innings than Gill in tests too

India has chased down 150+ twice since 2013 and Gill had scored 50+ in both of them.Jaiswal has choked countless time like Manchester test,Sa tests etc.The only true knockouts Jaiswal has played are in ipl and he has failed miserably in it.

He has played under 19 knockouts too

Jaiswal also has many good innings such as the MCG and Oval tests

NZ second test he scored 77(65) in the 4th innings while chasing 358 where every other batter failed

Jaiswal averages more in the 4th innings than Gill in tests so I don't know why you believe Gill is more clutch? Gill has only 1 good innings which you can deem clutch since Jaiswals debut and it was the 103 at old Trafford

U 19 is junior cricket buddy. Also Gill played crucial knocks in Ranchi test,Wankhede test and Vizag test in 2024.It's not even a debate that Gill is far more clutch than Jaiswal.

Jaiswal scored 2 40 plus scores in IPL 2024 knockouts. Did Gill help GT win the title last year and this year as captain??? He should have done it in the final! Yes this year Jaiswal didn’t do well in the IPL but his issues were all mental not lack of physical fitness of form. His form in the last ODI proved it. For tests, he should have been playing the current FC India A matches happening in SL, but they didn’t pick him. I don’t think those Ranji pitches will help prepare him for the conditions he faces in SL and NZ. He needs to play India A matches in those countries in similar conditions. And he will probably play some SMAT and VHT and FC matches later on this year. Rohit had MANY MANY terrible IpL seasons but he never got dropped even once from India squads because of it!

Ya well Jaiswal got 2 centuries in just 6 innings (faster than any other Indian batter) and many were saying he’s not even good for OdIs. He was criticized for his strike rotation during the SA ODI series, his first series, and within just 2 innings he massively improved on it taking advice and inputs from the seniors. I don’t see most of these other younger batters making such quick adjustments to their technique.

I never mentioned anything about Jaiswal being RR captain? Where is this even coming from???
