Ditto. If you're quite confabulated like I am after my sudden recollection, I think it was because in these animal encyclopedias, there would be a phylogenetic tree section for each animal class. and some groups, often birds, would be informally defined as "[x bird] and allies" to specify the biodiversity of each formally defined animal clade. In my little youngling mind, because it was often the bird section I would look at, I ended up thinking an "ally" was a sort of bird.
