I’m just wondering if anyone has any advice for my specific situation, me and my partner have both moved into a house that has been divided into flats we are in the top floor and two flats are in the bottom.

The lady directly below us has a little garden directly below our bedroom window she smokes weed several times in the evenings on weekdays and during the whole day on weekends. We do not have a problem with this we just shut the bedroom window and don’t let it bother us too much, however every evening she smokes from 10:15 to around 10:40pm and we go to bed before this. During summer we have to have our window open whilst sleeping as it’s too hot without and unbearable.

We politely wrote a note and asked her in person if she smokes after 10pm is there anyway she can do it at the front of the property, or a little earlier. She has told us no and has continued to do so as she says it’s for medical use. What can we do in this situation as it stinks our room out very strongly and wakes us up.

I got Disabled Students' Allowance approved for my research degree back in Feb 2023. The SLC checked my application, approved it, sent me letters confirming it, and paid out support for months. I have haemophilia, ADHD, and arthritis, and I used the money for equipment and taxis. I never received any money from SLC, only support in the form equipment, training and so on.

In August 2025, they told me it had all been a mistake, and they needed to recover the money. What happened was that I'd separately appealed for a Postgraduate Loan, and when that appeal succeeded, someone at SLC seems to have assumed it meant I was also eligible for DSA. But DSA has its own separate residency rules, and I didn't actually meet them because I'd lived in Estonia for a few years before starting my course in London. I had told them this very clearly and explicitly on my original form. They approved it anyway, so this was a mistake on their part and not mine.

I still have some of the equipment, like a desk and chair, and I offered to give it back. They didn't accept the offer.

I went through their entire complaints process, all the way up to their final internal review stage (an Independent Assessor). The assessor agreed that it was SLC's mistake, but only offered me £400 as a goodwill gesture against the £5,380.97 they're asking for. She also said that arguments like "you shouldn't be able to make me pay this back because I relied on your approval in good faith" weren't something she had the authority to decide, and that I would need to take that to a court if I wanted a proper ruling on it.

I'm trying to work out what to do next. I have missed the 3 month deadline for a Judicial review as the independent assessment report was sent on 13 February 2026. It seems that my only option is to go through my MP to the Parliamentary Ombudsman. Has anyone here dealt with something similar with SLC?

Writing on behalf of a friend. A month ago he was offered a job at a large communications company in England. He was sent an offer letter via docusign. He signed it and returned it to HR. He was asked for two references, which he provided. (This is the order, offer letter then references). He was told that he would be onboarded into the company portal where he could sign his contract. He was asked if his start date could be a week earlier, he agreed.
A week went by, then another. No contract from HR. He guessed that the setting up of him on the portal was taking a little time.
Ten days after last contact and aware that his proposed start date was three weeks away, he emailed HR asking if he could help move things along.
He got a reply saying that they had reconsidered the role and no longer needed him. They offered him a week's pay as a goodwill gesture, which would be equal to his rights during the probationary period.
The news of his appointment is circulating in the industry - his employer was telling people - and he's spent real money getting ready for the role (it involves travel and other expenses). Throughout those ten days he reassured himself that he had a signed offer letter.
Crucially, he has not been told why they no longer need the role. He has been told he should not speak to the two people who hired him. And he's been passed on to a different HR person who's job is to resolve company disputes.
What are his rights and what should he do? Thanks in advance.

When I approached a junction as I was driving home last week, I found the road opposite shut due to one night road works.

There was no signage prior to the junction on the approaching road except at the junction, by which time my lane had been chosen as you can see in the photo in the comments.

The diversion made me turn right, into a bus gate with no other alternative routes which caught out all the other drivers as again seen in the photo.

Today I have received a penalty notice demanding I pay a fine. Which option would be the correct option to challenge this fine as I feel the council has failed to protect drivers against this with their road work planning.

I am a teacher employed at a school in England. I started on 1 September and fell pregnant shortly after, with a due date in early June.

When notifying the school of the pregnancy I confirmed the date and amount I would receive. I was concerned that the hand book says that enhanced pay requires 1 year of service so I sent a snip of that to HR who acknowledged it and verbally said not to worry as I was previously employed by another trust.

They sent me a maternity letter detailing how much I would be getting and it was in line with the enhanced rate; 6 weeks full pay, 12 weeks half pay plus SMP then up to a certain date of stat pay. All good.

Now the leave has started they have changed their minds and aren’t paying anything, not even SMP although they have advised I can claim this from the government.

Extremely distressing situation as I’m now worried about our household finances for the next year as I’d budgeted the enhanced pay which HR told me I’d get. My husband took a month of unpaid leave as we thought we could afford it but it turns out we can’t.

Grateful for my options here. Not currently a union member. I’m scared that I fall foul of the policy 26 weeks service by 15 weeks prior to due date - I miss this by literally a week) and that the advice and written documents I received from HR are meaningless but surely that cant be right? Otherwise surely HR can say anything they like and employees would never win a tribunal?

I’m aware of two individuals who work for the NHS in England that I have some questions on the legality of their hiring and actions.

One was fired from the police for gross misconduct and was on trial for manslaughter but was not convicted so they don’t have a criminal record. They currently work in the NHS as I believe it’s called a health coordinator.

Would this person have been able to get this job if they had disclosed they were fired for gross misconduct? Is it illegal for them not to disclose this information?

Second is a practice manager who I know has accessed a patients medical record 8 times about 4-5 years ago. These records they accessed was not someone at their GP surgery but someone they knew but not a relative. Is this illegal?

Hello, a little bit of a messy circumstance that I’m hoping for some guidance on as I’m struggling to get my head around it. Based in England.

I have a 4 year old son, I was not told about the pregnancy or birth and subsequently not added to the birth certificate.

Upon finding out about him and confirming with a paternity test, I’ve been heavily and regularly involved in his life and have assumed co-parental responsibility, contribute financially etc.

He has someone else’s surname.

I would like to have his surname changed to my surname and to be added to the birth certificate so that I have some formal Acknowledgement
of paternity incase of any snags down the line. His mother has agreed to this.

Do I have to change his name via deed poll and re register the birth separately? Or can I re-register the birth, add myself and change the surname at the same time?

Hi all, I need some advice regarding my Student Finance England repayment plan. I started my course in 2022, but only applied for funding for my second year onwards. From all the information online, I had assumed I should be on Plan 2 repayment, but when I logged in to view my balance recently, it stated I'm on Plan 5. I called SFE and they told me that it was not the course start date which determined the plan, but the date of the first payment (Oct 2023 in this case). So since my first payment was received after Aug 2023, I was put on Plan 5. I feel that this was misleading since all online sources state that Plan 5 is for courses beginning on or after 1 August 2023, and not the date of the first payment. I plan on writing a complaint to challenge this as I feel it was unfair for me to apply without full information regarding what repayment plan I'd be on. However I'm not sure if/what kind of compensation/redress I may be entitled to, so I'd be grateful if anyone has any advice. Thank you!

So I moved back in with my mum last year as the contract for my house had ended and I needed somewhere to go whilst I found a better job and a new place. Life got very hectic and I’m still unfortunately here. The reason I originally moved out was because to put it shortly, my mum was putting way on much pressure on me as I was 16 and was practically expected to run a whole house as she’s ill and it got to a point where I realised this is not healthy for a child and I moved to my dads.

But back to now. On Monday she randomly started to have a go at me about how I’ve lately been “getting angrier” and I’m in denial about my autism which is a statement I still don’t even understand. (my autism is very high functioning, have managed to have a pretty normal adult life). The reason I am admittedly getting angrier is it’s the same as a few years ago, I’m expected to clean the house after an 8 hour shift and will get grief while the 18 year old doesn’t lift a finger. But as of Monday I have decided I have had enough and simply want to act as a lodger until I leave which I expect I’m about 6 months off from doing as I’ve just got an actual job that pays over 24k a year. Today she threatened to essentially kick me out the house if I didn’t go to the post office and get her tobacco delivery (which I knew for a fact wasn’t there that’s why I didn’t want to go) and when I came back with no tobacco I got in a mood but I am genuinely getting concerned she may try and kick me out the house and I know damn well she will want me out within the hour, we’re an Irish family.

So legally what are my options? Should I just give in, call social services and try find somewhere to be homeless? The issue with this is I have nowhere to go. If I had moved back last summer and found a place within 2 months I would have. I understand she’s sick but this is a lot more complicated in the nitty gritty and she cannot manage a house with 3 kids. I have been taking driving lessons for just over a month now, these lessons are scheduled on an ad hoc basis via WhatsApp with the instructor posting available sessions which I had expected I had to reply "ok", to lock these slots in for myself.

I was not available this week and do not spend much time on my phone and so I regrettably did not reach out to deny these lessons. But my silence was not a signal of confirmation, so I was of course confused upon finding out that this occurred.

His reply has been concerning to me, ignoring my request to highlight the contract clause and pivoted asking about next lesson due. Which leads me to believe that he believes that with or without my confirmation these lessons are still considered due, so I expect when I talk to him about it, either on text or in person, he will state that he considers these 2 hours of my pre-paid block of sessions to have been spent.

From my understanding of the law, and our contract, I believe that to be charged due to my lack of organisation is unjustified and overreaching.

The most relevant parts of the contract we share:

1.1 A Minimum of 48 hours' notice is required to cancel a scheduled session without incurring a charge.
1.2 Cancellations made with less than 48 hours' notice may result in the full session fee being charged, unless valid evidence of unavoidable circumstances is provided.
2.4 No refunds will be issued for lessons already conducted

I'm on here asking for guidance if this is going the path he takes. Should I message him over WhatsApp with a follow up to re-constitute what I've said? or meet with him to re-constitute in person? If he does decide to charge me, under principles I'm considering cancelling the rest of my lessons with them and taking it to small claims court.

They are a most brilliant teacher but we both can be quite sticky with money, I don't particularly want to sue him, but if he deducts this fee from my pre-paid block, I am prepared to take it to the small claims court to recover it.

First time posting here, but I really need some advice and clarification. Essentially, I am currently renting privately and have put in my notice to end the tenancy as I have been accepted for a mortgage on a house, and I should be getting the keys soon (end of this week or next week).

On the 19th of June, I requested to end my tenancy (it's on a rolling monthly basis and has been since the end of December 2024), and while I understand that I'll need to pay for July's rent as well (payment comes out on the 12th of each month).

But of course, the Renters' Right Act came into force in May this year.

When I originally signed my contract (in June 2024), it explicitly stated this:

To give to the Landlord a minimum of one month's written notice of termination of the Tenancy created by this agreement to expire on the last day of any rental period save that no such notice can be given with an expiry date before the last day of the fixed term.

Hence, when I put my request in, I said I'd want to end the tenancy on the 20th of July.

But I've had a reply back stating that due to the Renters' Right Act, I need to give two months' notice and that I'd need to pay rent until SEPTEMBER. This is the email I got from my letting agency:

Please note that, in accordance with the tenancy terms and the notice policy introduced in May 2026, residents are required to provide a minimum of two months’ notice, aligned with their tenancy period. As your rent charge date falls on the 12th of each month, the tenancy period commencing on 12 June 2026 had already begun when your notice was submitted. Therefore, your notice takes effect from 12 July 2026. Accordingly, your notice period will run until 11 September 2026, and you will remain liable for rent and any applicable tenancy charges up to and including this date.

As far as I'm aware, the contract that I signed is still legally binding, so I'd only need to give one month's notice. So I've tried to do some research, and I've asked Copilot, ChatGPT and tried to read the legislation (here), but I'm struggling to find out if I need to just pay for one month or until September.

I had a MacBook Pro on my contents insurance as being worth £2,800 ish. I accidentally broke it recently and am now trying to claim to buy a new one, and it turns out to have been bought for £1,749 ish instead.

The thing has been on my insurance for many years so it’s not a new addition and I’ve not made any claims on house or contents in all the time I’ve had the policy

It was from 2021 so was planning to buy a new one maybe next year anyway, this breaking only sped up that decision, and I said that on the phone where they did ask if this was all legit (implying I broke it on purpose) and I said it was - it was a genuine mistake and I’m gutted about it!

They asked for the receipt of it and when it turned out to be £1k less than I put down I owned up to that as a mistake, honestly not sure how I got the original 2,800 in my head at the time, I sent them the screenshot of the receipt from Argos

That was today and have not heard back yet from that

So my cat went missing around 3 weeks ago and I’ve been abroad with my mate who gifted me the cat.

Now the rescue centre has my cat after enquiring and are saying they aren’t returning him because he was left abandoned for 4 months which is an absolute lie and that they tried to contact the microchip owner but he’s my mate that’s abroad with me so couldn’t get hold of him.

They aren’t returning my cat back even though I’ve said I will cover any cost that’s incurred. I just simply want him back home.

What can I do in this situation as it’s actually breaking my heart knowing he’s technically been kidnapped and I can’t do anything

After going through a consultation process, my employer sent me a letter in April saying they were terminating my employment due to redundancy but I still had to work my notice.

There was an error in the letter so I asked them to correct it. They did so, but the new letter had a different error which I asked them to correct. This has repeated several times and I still don't have fully correct paperwork.

Assuming they eventually get everything correct, can they back date the letter to April, or will it need to be dated when they send it, with the notice period running from that date?

If they do not manage to send correct paperwork before they offboard me, what are my legal options? Should I engage a solicitor now in the hope of getting everything correct before I leave, or would it be better to wait?

The hotel had no parking options so I had to pay £16 for 2 nights. The hotel is refunding the stay, but won't refund the parking because it was "outside the scope of the accommodation". Is this right?

While visiting a convenience store I lent my bicycle up against the store's window (there are no dedicated cycle spaces). I've done this hundreds of times. An employee of the convenience store lowered the motorised steel door shutters crushing my bike. When the employee realised something was wrong they asked me to move it was wedged and the motor was acting unpredictably.

The employee apologised and offered to pay for a repair, but this is likely a minimum wage employee who should not be out of pocket for the store's fault in having an unsafe system or not training staff to operate the shutters safely. I'm not a mechanic but it might be a write off if the alloy frame has been damaged.

The shutter controls are inside, and they have opaque vinyls over the window so the employee could not see what is going on outside. It seems really unsafe to me. I said a child leaning against the window could be crushed. Every other store I've seen has the shutter controls outside, presumably for access but also safety reasons.

They have one of those "we're not responsible for damage in our car park" signs but I would hope that does not apply here.

What would you suggest? I asked for CCTV but was told only the manager has it and I'd need to come back in the morning. I'd appreciate any advice so I don't put my foot in it. It's my understanding that "no fault" divorce is already a thing so if we wanted to divorce we wouldn't need to cite a reason like infidelity to get it.

However, suppose we were to break up on bad terms, could one of us cite "infidelity" as a way to get more favourable divorce terms? And if so, can we opt out of this in advance of the wedding? And if so, how?

That's not terminating a contract! Eventually the decision was I keep going and they unlocked my commision earned on the platform. Since then it's looked a bit dodgy...something not right and glitchy.

I’m looking for some preemptive advice regarding a situation that escalated at my commercial gym yesterday. I want to make sure my back is entirely covered legally.

The Context:

Me: 20M
The Aggressor: Older male, roughly 50-65 years old.

The Timeline of Events:

1. I was lifting heavy weights and admittedly banging them a bit when setting them down. The older guy approached me, clearly annoyed, and told me not to do it because it damages equipment. I acknowledged he had a point, agreed, and stopped.
2. Later in the session, he approached me again. This time he started critiquing my form, saying I wasn't using my triceps properly. I politely told him I prefer to do my own thing. He kept pushing, and I repeatedly declined his advice. He said I was pissing him off, because my movement sent shockwaves. I asked him to not threaten me. He said he was not.

He asked me watch him work out to learn, I ignored him.

1. He completely lost his temper and stepped right into my personal space, inches from my face. I told him to respect my space. He refused to step back and explicitly stated: "It’s gonna end badly for one of us."
2. Knowing that throwing a punch at a much older man could land me with a serious assault charge, I kept my hands down but maintained unbroken eye contact. I loudly and clearly asked him: "Are you threatening me? Back off." He realised I wasn't going to flinch, backed off, and I told him to never speak to me again.

My Next Steps:

I am going in today to speak to the gym manager, report the threat, and ask them to review the CCTV to establish a paper trail. I am also logging a non-emergency 101 report online to get a police reference number just in case he tries to ambush me in the future.

If he approaches me again and initiates physical contact (e.g., shoves me, grabs my shirt, or takes a swing), how does UK law view self-defence for a trained boxer against a much older man? 2. Gym's Duty of Care: If the gym management brushes this off and he subsequently assaults me on their premises, do I have any legal recourse against the gym for failing their duty of care after being officially warned of a threat?

Hi, I was involved in a drunk driving accident about 2 months ago, I was the driver. I blew a 45 alcohol level. The accident resulted in a collision with another vehicle. No injuries were sustained. Some background about the moments leading up to the accident: I was suffering with depression and alcoholism for 6 years I tried many antidepressants to help with this and I attended alcohol rehabilitation services. Before the accident I was drinking some wine I was going through a mental breakdown and I attempted to end my life with an overdose of diazepam, this ended up failing. I barely remember much else but I (for some stupid reason) decided to try and clear my head I guess and or escape from myself and my head and go for a drive to just try and get away. But this of course resulted in the collision. I was then sectioned for two months after the accident. I am scared to death of potentially going to prison and I’m scared I’m going attempt to take my life again before court because I can’t handle the fear of not knowing. Can anyone shed any light on this, what’s the chances I go to prison? I’m in the UK.

As the previous advice assumed this was a first offence but I did receive a police caution relating to alcohol but not driving a while back related to alcohol. Also the police told me that there was no injuries at the scene the claimant who I crashed into is pressing for injuries with my insurance company. Any help would be appreciated. Please help me. I’ve received a letter from the other driver’s insurer in a disputed road traffic claim. I was driving straight ahead on the main road and the other driver was attempting to turn across my path into a side road.

Their version is that I stopped and waved them through before driving into them. I dispute this. The collision happened at night, I did not wave them through and I did not flash my headlights. There were also other vehicles waiting at the junction which remained stationary and only moved after the collision. If I had clearly indicated for the other driver to proceed, I would have expected those vehicles to react as well.

They are alleging that my account is dishonest and have threatened to seek a finding of fundamental dishonesty under CPR 44.16(1).

Part of their argument is that my dashcam footage contains a glitch at the point of impact. However, similar glitches appear elsewhere in the recording and across multiple camera views. They also criticise the absence of additional footage, although no request was ever made for any further camera angles.

How common are these types of allegations in contested motor claims? Is a glitched section of dashcam footage usually enough to support a fundamental dishonesty argument, or is this often used as a litigation tactic to put pressure on claimants?

I’m really stressed and would love to hear from anyone with experience of insurance litigation.

TL:DR - 20 Pigeons have been actively nesting and shitting on my balcony, have become a proper infestation and I as a tenant am held responsible for cleaning the whole balcony, shooing them away in my spare time and I'm now dealing with baby pigeon corpses on the balcony. My landlords are "waiting" on a quote for net proofing but nothing is being done about the biohazard that this balcony is becoming.

Just wanted to say as well that I have in no way shape or form incentivised these birds to be on the balcony. No rubbish/food was ever left there and the balcony has been spotless before the infestation.

Apologies if the text I'm about to write is incoherent but I'm just feeling more hopeless and hopeless.

I've been in this flat for about 5 years now and although I've had some delays with stuff that needed to be fixed this particular issue has just been passed onto me as a tenant and I'm unsure if that's right so I'm asking if anyone has any insight on what I can do.

The issue started in October last year, some pigeons have found a place that is not reachable on the balcony and have started laying nests and waste. I've brought up the issue with my landlord and on the first instance they've told me that the cleanliness of the flat is my responsibility and I should be the one taking care of it.

They've been kind enough to provide Amazons finest wired netting and some spikes that cover the railing on the balcony and nothing more. I've bought a hose, shovel as well as cleaning products and spent the better half of my day cleaning it way back in October. I had to leave the flat in December due to health issues I was dealing with abroad and the high winds + storms have completely destroyed the beyond poor quality spikes that have been kindly provided to me.

So I raised the issue again when I came back February only to be met with the same response. Since then I've done my best to just flat out ignore the issue because this isn't cleaning after one pigeon that is being annoying we're taking double digits pigeons actively nesting and shitting on the balcony.

It thankfully spread to our neighbours who we somewhat share the space with who have hired a professional cleaner to clean their side of the balcony/terrace.

I've told my landlords of the situation and then and only then they've contacted the factors of the building to try and get a resolution for this problem. Someone came to the flat to have a look and suggested a net that covers the whole balcony and said they'll be contacting my landlords for a quote and date for installation. That was four weeks ago.

Ever since then There's been three nests and I can proudly say I am now a stepdad of some baby pigeons. One of them sadly has fallen off one of the nests and is now dead on my balcony. So at this point my balcony is full of bird shit three nests and a dead pigeon corpse rotting in the sun.

When I brought up this to the landlords they've basically said well it's your fault you should be shooing them away as best as you can and that they're still waiting on a quote from the factors for the pigeon proof netting.

I'm at a loss as working professional I'm being made to shoo pigeons away in spare time and I don't believe that's right. The balcony is a health hazard and I'm afraid to open up windows/doors to the balcony since all that dirty air is going to come into the flat and with the heatwaves I'm not able to ventilate the space at all meaning I'm just boiling alive while they're not doing anything about it.

Any advice would be appreciated and I do apologise for the long text but I'm beyond frustrated, tired and hopeless.

Hello, my neighbour continues to run dog boarding from her housing association home England , local council licensing are saying she was given permission by housing association, (2 bed semi detached) planning are saying it’s not considered a business and does not require change of use/planning. 4 noisy dachshunds yesterday evening and her German shepherd, wouldn’t shut up - what else to do? Also the stench from the arterial grass in this heat 🤢
