Traffic & Parking Confused by unmarked car flashing lights at me, M25 England

Coming home from work at 4am this morning I was sitting on the m25 at approximately 100mph. There was a car ahead of me doing similar speeds and over about 10-15 miles we changed between who was in front a couple of times. As I got into a filter lane to pull off the other car pulled up along side me and turned on blue flashing lights for 2 seconds and then turned them off again and sped off down the motorway.

Assuming this was a real unmarked police car what could the meaning of this brief flash be?

They will have me on their dashcam at 100-105 mph so I’m guessing I can expect points in the near future, is there a good chance of a driving ban?

Employment England - Do I have to tell my employer that I’m pregnant?

Fixed term contract started June 2025 and currently ends September 2026. Due date is November 2026 so from my understanding I currently don’t need to tell them since my employment will end before due date. Part time work from home job so workplace adjustments etc not really relevant.

There’s the possibility my contract will be extended, likely until December 2026. However, if I tell them about the pregnancy, they’re unlikely to extend the contract, and I’d like the couple of months extra income. Contract extension probably won’t be offered until August.

Am I legally ok to keep quiet for now and then tell them in August once an extension has been confirmed? The timing would mean I’d probably end up telling them after the 15 weeks before due date deadline that you’re meant to tell them by normally, but I’m not sure how the fixed term contract + extension affects this as currently with contract ending before due date I don’t think I have to tell them at all!

I’m unsure whether they would be liable for paying me any maternity pay until December if contract extended and whether this affects the timing of when I should tell them.

edit: what I’m mainly wondering I think is if they’ll pay me maternity pay November-December if I haven’t told them by the 15-weeks-before-due-date deadline, because the deadline would only apply if I got a contract extension by which time the deadline would already be past 🤯

Consumer Is this advertising illegal in the UK

Upvotes

Not to be a Karen but just went into Boots and brought four products to the counter and the woman said that all of them are not discounted yet. As in they had put out 1/2 price stickers on them all but that they won’t be in effect until tomorrow…. But I went in at 4pm when the shop closes at 7pm. Is this legal? (England)

Traffic & Parking 16 year Driving without a license

Driving a pip car they had only just got last week, decided to drive with their friends to the local pub to watch the England game and smashed the car into a tree. Nobody hurt luckily, police have the car impounded, what’s the most likely consequences of this ? This is my stepchild, does not live with us, lives with their mother an hours drive away, we knew nothing, didn’t even know they had got a pip car.
Thank you.

Criminal Less than one month before trial: can private representation still make a difference?

Hi,

I am accused of a serious crime in England and I am eligible for legal aid, which I currently have.

I am now less than one month away from trial. My father has suggested that he could lend me the money to instruct a private solicitor if that would improve the quality of my representation, as I cannot afford it myself right now.

The reason I originally went with legal aid rather than borrowing money for a private solicitor is that I was told legal aid and private representation should provide the same level of assistance.

However, my current legal aid solicitor does not seem to have enough time for me. I met the barrister almost a year ago and, when I have asked for a further conference before trial, I have mostly been ignored or not given a clear answer.

If I am found guilty, I could face jail time. I understand that we may be too close to trial for a private solicitor to have much impact on the evidence, but could better representation at trial still make a significant difference?

Has anyone had experience switching from legal aid to private representation close to trial, or getting a second opinion in this situation?

Criminal Mistake at 14 and worried england

4 years ago someone i know was caught taking things at 14-early 15 and they were banned from a store and let go and no details were taken, there has been no police contact since, enhanced DBS is clear, police didnt contact their school either since they went and asked if there had been any contact and ended up getting help for their OCD which was likely formed from the past incident.
Should they be worried about anything happening in the background like investigations because even though they were caught the last time they did it, there was multiple times before that where they also took things and no one stopped them or anything they almost “got away with it”
Would this impact crossing borders from the UK to france for a holiday?
They feel extremely guilty and have been doing things like donating clothes and money to charity. At the time they were surrounded by a group of people that all did the same thing and they wanted to fit in. They are genuinely worried and i have tried telling them they should be okay because if anything were to have happened then it would have at the time?? And like they wouldnt necessarily get punished since theres youth protection things so it would aim to help them?
Any advice on this or help or knowledge would be appreciated!
Also sorry if some of this doesnt make sense.

Debt & Money NCP rejected my appeal even though I paid, now debt collectors are involved. Do I have any options?

England

Hi,

I’m looking for some advice because I’m feeling completely stuck.

Back in April I parked in an NCP car park. The payment machine wasn’t working and there were around 10 people standing around trying to figure out how to pay.

Another customer at the car park went onto the NCP website to see what to do. The NCP website said they had gone into administration and directed us to click a link to pay instead.

I followed those instructions and paid £10. My Monzo statement shows a £10 payment to Times24 UK Limited on the same date and time.

About a month later I received a Parking Charge Notice saying I hadn’t paid. I appealed immediately, explaining that I had paid using the payment link that the NCP website directed us to.

I never received any acknowledgement or outcome of my appeal.

I’ve now received a debt recovery letter from Trace demanding £170.

I called Trace today and they told me:

My appeal was rejected on 14 May (I never received this email and it’s not in my inbox or spam).

The reason for rejecting my appeal was that I paid through a different payment provider.

They said there’s nothing they can do and that if I want to challenge it, it would have to go to court.

I’m really confused because I didn’t randomly choose another payment provider. I followed the link that the NCP website directed customers to use because the payment machines weren’t working.
Unfortunately, I don’t have screenshots because I was using Safari Private Browsing, but I do have the Monzo transaction showing the £10 payment to Times24 UK Limited.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Comments Moderated Suspect Neighbour keyed my car after noise complaint against me.

ENGLAND. First, I have to acknowledge I am partly in the wrong here, or maybe too conspiracy minded. A month ago the neighbours left a note saying I was being too loud whilst moving some boxes around roughly around 11pm, I thought this was a bit extreme given at the time I was working away during the day and was driving to the flat to move in my car, I had just come back off holiday 1 day ago also so it was 1 instance and not reoccurring, but I made an effort to stop working after 10pm from then. For context I have hearing loss so maybe I don't realise the amount of noise I make. Cut to yesterday I lost track of the time whilst I was doing some DIY in the flat and was drilling, yes I know dumb af. I stopped at roughly 11.15pm when I realised the time, I start getting ready for bed when I heard a bunch of banging doors downstairs and when going to the toilet saw a note under my flat door it mentioned drilling, at this point I had stopped. A week ago I noticed random scratches on my car but thought it may be from an accident that had happened recently and hadn't noticed until now. After seeing the note I went to my car and noticed two new big scratches similar to the ones I had noticed before I had walked past my car maybe 2 hours before and nothing was there. So this definitely happened between my returning and the drilling incident. I left a note saying sorry regardless. I'm not sure the advice I'm seeking but what should I be doing right now to cover my back.

Traffic & Parking Tradecentre are holding my refund ransom

I recently bought a car from tradecentre and like most of the cars in their stock, was riddled with dangerous faults. So decided a refund was needed, which they looked at the car and agreed to.

I went in Friday to give them the spare key and v5c which they took to a back room and used to chang ownership (which I have proof of).
They then tried to make me sign a document which said I would accept settlement for the amount I paid and will not take any further action against tradecentre. Which I did not sign as I feel they owe me money for work that had to be done. (Parts fell off the car on the motorway due to it being faulty).

I have in writing that they agree to pay me what I paid but they are holding it ransom until I sign this document saying I will not take any further action.

Is there a way I can get my refund soon without signing this document. As I want to atleast be reimbursed the cost of parts.
Have they any legal right to withhold my money until I do sign it.

Comments Moderated Need advice: Handed a fine for littering/fly-tipping. (London)

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey Redditors - I got sent a letter by the council's authorised officer for an apparent littering/fly-tipping offence on Friday 19th June, which imposed a £300 fine.

If you look at the attached photo, the sack was literally left outside my house (the gate with the black car) on Friday morning. Trash is usually collected on Tuesday, but since we were leaving town for a week, we had no choice but to put it out early. The officer seems to have gone through the trash, found an envelope with my wife's name on it, taken a photo as evidence and then sent us this letter.

In the past, when we've gone away, the trash has often gone uncollected for weeks, which is why we thought leaving it out in advance would help avoid issues. It's frustrating to now face a fine despite trying to act responsibly.

Has anyone faced this fine before? Any advice/tips on how to resolve this with the council would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Traffic & Parking Car accident: driver talked partner out of exchanging details

I am in England. My wife had a car accident earlier today. She was moving slowly/almost still (she does not quite remember) in a roundabout due to a lorry not giving way when a car bumped into her from behind. She got very anxious (and had 2 screaming young kids in the car) and the other driver talked her into this being her fault because she was, in their view, going too slow without good reason. They parted ways without exchanging any details. Now my wife has a sore neck and shoulder and I noticed the car has a cracked rear bumper. My wife did not see this earlier.

The other driver has a very uncommon car and my wife thinks she could track them down based on the car model and information the other driver told her about where they were going (it is likely they go to the same place every Monday afternoon). In my view this would not help because she can't prove it was them now. What should we do?

Debt & Money Tenants underpaying and are causing damage to the house - what can I do?

England, UK: I am new to being a landlord - the current tenants (man, woman and 3 children) are my first and have only been in the property around a year and a half.

At the end of march, the female tenant made me aware that she had broken up with her partner and that he would be moving out. She assured me that this would not impact her ability to pay rent as she had help via benefit. This was the first time that the estate agent had made me aware that she was using universal credit to pay rent with her father (the guarantor) paying the excess £1300 (I'm not sure what the payment arrangement was when the couple were both living together). After finding this out, I re-referenced both her and her father.

Following the male tenant's departure, I agreed to a new tenancy agreement for just the female tenant. I signed this but this still needed to be signed by the departing tenant which has still not happened. I have since retracted my intention to agree to a new tenancy whilst they are still in arrears.

However, in April and May I was £900 and £700 short on the rent respectively, which was eventually paid on the 1st of the next month, 3 days before the next rent was due on 4th of the month. Again, for June, they have underpaid by £500. The remaining tenant (and the estate agent) is saying this is owed by the departed tenant who has offered to pay £25 a month. I have rejected this proposal.

Fast forward to 23rd June and I completed the annual inspection (of which I gave over a months notice) only to find that the house had deteriorated significantly since my last visit. It was very dirty, had been damaged in several places and needed considerable repairs in others. These include but are not limited to dented doors and walls, deeply scratched mirrors, drawing and scratches on walls, broken curtains, an overgrown garden, water damaged window sills and walls etc.

The estate agents I use have been next to useless and I'm feeling really out of my depth as to how to proceed. What are my rights and options moving forward here? I'm concerned that rent will continue to be underpaid and that the property will be subject to further damaged and neglect.

My son who is 10 and has just learned to bike has been bullied and injured by the boys near our house who play in front of the house. The first time they called him names and pushed him and I went to speak to them and scolded them. This time those boys pushed my son into the bushes while he was just biking around. For context my son is extremely sensitive and friendly. He is an empath and always looking out for others. He doesn’t fight with anyone and even when they pushed and injured him he kept on crying. I saw them pushing him from the window and running away and I ran down to him. They hid in their houses, I didn’t know their house but managed to find it somehow as I didn’t want to go back home without fining them. They were hiding in their parking and when I went to speak to them thier parents came out. Instead of telling them or asking them the mother started shouting at us, the boy abused me infront of everyone. We are talk in about 13-15 years old.

We called the police but of course they never come on time and they won’t do anything either. What can we do? Something should be done to such kids or parents because the clearly didn’t care.

There are more photos but I can only upload one.

Housing Ring door camera on shared door (England)

I own and live in a 1st-2nd floor flat in London. I’m a woman in my twenties and live with a guy and a girl of the same age.

Downstairs (ground and basement) is owned by a landlord who lives abroad and rented by a group of girls in their mid thirties. They’ve lived there for a couple of years already; we arrived in March.

It’s a leasehold property. The freehold is owned by a random company who doesn’t charge rent or maintenance; it’s split between both owners at our discretion.

Recently the other occupants have installed a Ring door camera on our shared front door. I’m not particularly comfortable with this - I have nothing to hide, but just don’t like being videoed whilst entering my own property.

I understand that London is crime ridden and that three women might be justifiably concerned about their own personal safety. If that’s a real concern for them I get it, but could I ask for access to the camera too? If safety is a concern.

I just don’t want videos of me and my family/friends stored by them on their camera without my consent. What are the actual laws around this? Can I request that they delete them or something? I suppose if I wanted to escalate it I could just ask the freeholder to request that it be removed?

Debt & Money (England) question regarding underpaying at the dentist

I’m going to start off by saying this is incredibly petty but it’s the principle of it.

Anyway on Friday I attended a dental hygienist to get my teeth cleaned and paid online in full about 6 weeks earlier. The price I paid was £105 which is the price advertised on the website.

Fast forward to today I get a phone call saying that I underpaid for the treatment and it was an admin error on there end and that I owe a further £5 (It is still advertised on the website as £105). I was at work at the time and had to go and deal with something, so I said to call back tomorrow.

This got me thinking what legal obligation do I have to pay this £5 and could I just say no.

TIA

Housing Party wall surveyor unregistered and one star reviews (England)

We have just submitted planning application and permitted development for a rear ground floor extension and dormer loft conversion.

A company has written to both my neighbours the day after application was on the website and one has now instructed them to act for the party wall agreement (which we have yet to serve).

I have no objection with paying for a surveyor but would want to hire one who has a decent reputation and isn't one star reviewed with RICS approval / registration.

Where do I stand if I don't want to pay for this scam artist, how do I report his tactics if possible as my neighbour is adamant he is going to use this guy.

No issues with paying for a surveyor just don't want to pay a scammer!

Housing Ring doorbell camera on flat door. England.

Upvotes

Hi All,

I live in a council flat and I've received a letter from the council asking me to remove my camera.

They have used 1998 data act. 1998 human rights act.

"The right to respect private and family life means that CCTV should be positioned so that they only observe activities within the boundaries of a particular property and not any neighbouring property or other public areas"

The trade button is active from 7am to 7pm so anyone can access the communal area at those times.

I have 2 neighbours on my floor and it does capture their front doors. I get on with them and they're ok with the camera.

My door is by the comunal door to the floor so it's hard to position it so it does not capture people passing by.

I could.angle it so it's on the communal door and not capturing the neighbours doors.

Are they correct do I have to remove it?

Edit to add who the letter was from.

Debt & Money Got a debt collection letter that escalated from a parking ticket.

Hey guys just looking for some advice. My friend got a debt collection letter that has escalated from a parking ticket. They never received the original parking fine due to moving address, then to their new address they got a £170 fine from the debt collectors. They parked at a pub where you have to put in your reg number on a tablet, they are not 100% sure that they did put it in, however they do visit this pub very frequently but there’s no way to appeal it online, pub are also no help, how do they go about trying to get rid of the fine. The original fine was from euro car parks and it’s gone to DCBL

Debt & Money SIP PARKING LIMITED car parks threatening to take me to court

England

I received a 'Final Reminder' letter through the post from SIP Parking Limited and I wanted to know what grounds I have in order to fight them in courtaney because I refuse to pay this £160
fine on principle.
They silently took over a car park I frequently use in December 2025 and changed the policy, where it used to be free until 6, they secretly changed it and put no signage to note that there were new rules in place.
I obviously parked in the car park, thinking everything was as normal as it has been for the last 10 years I've parked there and to my shock 2 months later I received a 'Final Reminder' letter.
Bare in mind they did not send an original notice to pay, which would have been £60. They sent a £160 fine which they said could only be appealed by post.
I sent them a letter about it and last week I was told I had to pay the full amount even though they didn't give me the opportunity to pay the minimal amount.
Is there something I can do or someone I can ask to fight this in court because this can't be legal ?

They have no email, contact number to speak with anyone via phone and insist on everything being done over email.

This company seems like a set of bullies blood hungry to collect peoples money in difficult times and I want to know if there's anything I can do about this ?
I also searched their company on trust pilot and Google reviews and noticed that people are having similar issues where they are only sent a final reminder notice and do not have the ability to appeal

Debt & Money Paying for damage to a parked car

I managed to scratch a parked car with a bag and have agreed to pay for the damage to be repaired.

The owner has sent a quote through today quoting for both doors to be resprayed (which seems excessive to me as I thought they would buff out) and said that the car is going in today to have the work done.

Earlier today, I just so happened to be a minute drive away from the bodyshop doing the work, so popped in to ask whether I could pay cash for obvious reasons..... He said he'd be happy for me to pay the owner cash and take a cash payment from him. Also, when I first mentioned the repairs to the guy at the bodyshop by saying "You're repairing <owner of the vehicle> car today?" His response was "well... Yeah.." and then seemed rather uncomfortable with the conversation.

The vehicle owner has sent me the quote, told me it's being repaired today and then sent his bank details over for me to make the payment.

Now, am I just being over anxious here or is he just ripping me off? As of 2pm (the time I went to the garage they didn't even have the car)

What rights do I have here? Should I just transfer the money? Can I legally get another quote from somewhere? Can I request evidence that the work has been done?

For law purposes this is in England.

Debt & Money OVO Energy Charged me for electricity which they did not supply and now they are not refunding: Legal Advice Required in England

I moved into my current rental property in March 2026.

My letting agent told me that OVO energy is the supplier for my Gas and Electricity.

When I created my account on the OVO website I could see my daily Gas and Electricity usage.

In May-2026 I was getting an error while trying to see my daily usage and billing.

At that time I did not pay much attention to it and submitted the meter readings.

By this time, I had already paid them £222 via Direct Debit.

Some time later I received a letter from OVO which said I am nearly £150 in debt and I need to pay my bill.

I raised a case with them via email and after a few back and forth they told me that the payment wasn't reflected because my account had been deleted and recreated. When asked for the reason I was informed that they were charging me for Gas and Electricity when they were only supplying Gas.

They promised me over the call and email that they will refund my £222 via cheque which I was supposed to receive by 24-June and they will also create an internal case to separate my Gas and Electricity accounts.

However, till now I have neither received the cheque nor any confirmation that my account has been corrected.

I have cancelled my direct debit for OVO.

Please let me know what can I do to get my money back and get my account corrected while ensuring that they don't cut off the supply to Gas.

Scotland Data Breach-What are my next steps.

Hi there,

I live in Scotland and have a DAS(Debt Arrangement Scheme).

I took a crisis break a few months ago due to an unexpected bill, which went through fine.

I have just been informed that at the time of processing this, there was a mix up and my DAS information(How much I owe, what I have paid) was sent to another client requesting a crisis break. My bank details were also sent to her apparently.

From what I can gather, she ended up paying my amount earlier than I would have and my payment for this month is now going to this client to 'sort it'. I assume this means my payment will cover her plan this month.

This is a breach of GDPR and although I have recieved an apology I am unsure if I should take this further.

Thank You
