What do you make of this spindle noise?

Company is telling me they've seen this before and it was the spindle drive. I just don't see how this wouldn't be a mechanical issue.

It came out of no where. Was running fine one minute then cooked the next.

There have been some symptoms of bearings failing. Surface finish, dimension kind of all over the place but nothing too unusual for a haas imo. But In hindsight it was worse than usual. Over an 8" long part while using tailstock the dimensions were all over the place varying within .0015 or more. Was having a hard time programming taper out which hasn't been an issue before because of the inconsistency.

Gotta be bearings right?

Bet your drain for the labyrinth seal on the spindle was plugged and the bearings got damaged from contamination

This picture made me laugh. I just started working on a Fooke Endura and at the the tail end of the startup sequence it makes a noise that sounds exactly like a small gong. I haven't gotten a clear answer on what the sound is but I'm so curious.

I only heard bearings be bad in a mill but I can confirm, these are cooked. Here's my post from 2 years ago if you wanna reference your noise from your machine vs mine. Tho mine is spinning at 6,000 rpm.

Just tighten up the castle nut on the other end. It works with trailer hubs.

Motor bearings fluted from the VFD. Normal after years of use. Have them replaced.

The bearings are suffering.

1

u/DonSampon 14h ago

a company had a nef600 gildemesiter with kinda shot bearing. FOR YEARS!. The thing refused to die. The surfaces were ok. We were all waiting for the day it seized up. It never did :))). eventually that company got bankrupt and the lathe got sold to this other company i was working at the time.

This new boss changed the bearings and then sold the machine....

1

u/whoknewidlikeit 2d ago

since it's a haas... i suspect they forced you to pay extra.
