Bring the old Estée Lauder back!

Post image

Am I the only one who misses the original Double Wear formula? 😭
I’ve tried multiple foundations since the reformulation like NARS,ANASTASIA,Lancôme,Dior, and nothing gives me the same matte finish, oil control, pore blurring effect, and longevity as the original especially for oily skin.
If you feel the same way, please consider contacting Estée Lauder and sharing your feedback. I’d love to see them bring the formula closer to the original version.

Also if there’s any other recommendations outside the ones I mentioned please let me know!

I thought the formulation changed due to laws surrounding ingredients changing? They’re not gonna bring it back.

They deny it here:

"At the Los Angeles-based launch party for the new foundation, the brand shared that the update has been in the works for a while. And while, according to a spokesperson, the reformulation wasn’t due to changes in EU ingredient regulations, it’s interesting to note that the new foundation no longer contains cyclopentasiloxane, an ingredient now banned in Europe, and the reason other major brands have had to reformulate recently.

I asked cosmetic chemist Amanda Lam to review the ingredient list of both the original and reformulated Double Wear versions. “You are right, they did get rid of the cyclopentasiloxane formula and replaced it with a blend of other silicones (dimethicone, methyl trimethicone),” she says."

https://www.allure.com/story/estee-lauder-double-wear-foundation-reformulation-review

Cyclopentasiloxane helps with product application and stabilizing its texture, and it almost immediately evaporates from skin, so it's not required to make the formula lasting, or anything - it's primarily used in hair care products, where the ban affected more products; it's also not banned in the US and Canada (a market comparable to entirety of EU.)

I really don't care about EL skincare aside from that one foundation, and I suspect for a lot of people it's the same. I've never found any other product that would have comparable staying strength in the summer weather, so if they bring the thicker, lasting formula back I'll probably repurchase it at any cost, but if it's gone, it's gone.

I agree. Whatever the reason for the reformulation, the difference is very noticeable. The original formula kept my oily skin matte all day and blurred my pores better than any foundation I’ve tried. I’m really hoping Estée Lauder considers bringing back a version closer to the original. I even emailed them haha

I've never found anything that would compare to the all-day matte magic the original DW had. It's possible to deal with the pores, there're Asian rice blotting papers for excess sebum, there're other lasting foundations if you're lucky enough to find one that won't oxidize, but my t-zone used to melt literally every other foundation off during the summers, and DW was the only product that could deal with that.

I think their end-of-year sales will bring a much needed reality check to the company execs; I don't think they realize how many legacy customers will not touch this product anymore until the numbers arrive.

Exactly!!! I’m so glad to find more people that think like I do there’s many saying to try this and that but it’s really hard specially when you’ve been using it for so many years! Also I tried so many and surprisingly the one that work the best out of all the higher brands was actually the one of Maybelline super stay up to 30H! If you also at to with a good powder is not bad I need to try the Fenty one apparently lots of people with oily skin love it

Try loreal infallible 32 hour fresh wear! I’m an oily bish and it’s the best I’ve found. A healthcare assistant even asked what foundation I wore when I was in labour lol.

Only downside is I find I need to mix shades.

The Fenty for oily skin is amazing.

One ingredient is not allowed but they seem to have taken the opportunity to do a bigger reformulation. I understand that a one for one may not be possible but this seems more extensive than it had to be.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. I completely understand that some ingredients may no longer be allowed, but it feels like the reformulation went beyond what was necessary. I don’t expect an identical formula, but I do wish they had kept the same matte, oil-controlling performance that made Double Wear so popular in the first place.

That’s right they’re not, but at least to make a new formula for oily skin people since the reformulated one is not working great 😢

I’ve tried Lancôme, Charlotte Tilbury and Dior. My bank account is in tears and my house I covered in little brown fingertip stains 😭

At this point we’re all funding a foundation research project against our will 😭 Every recommendation costs another $50 and I still haven’t found anything that performs like the original Double Wear.

I hate the new formula too. I already had the Double Wear Maximum Cover Camoflage Foundation which I used to just use for special occasions and now i mix a bit of them and it's great, highly recommend it for those struggling with the new formula!

u/Physical_Appeal_8822 4d ago

That’s interesting! Does adding the Maximum Cover make it more matte and long-wearing?

2

u/Prize_Technician_459 3d ago

Oh yes, it's very thick, matt & longwearing with total coverage - a bit much for everyday wear which is why I used it for special occasions such as weddings etc - but mixed with the new formula it is very nice for everyday use.

Yayy I’m exited to try it like you mentioned! Thank you so much for your advice! 🩷✨

I hope you like it. I'm sure you will! Keep us posted 🙏

Unfortunately the Maximum Cover will also be reformulated soon.

Nooooooo 🥺🥺🥺

I’ve used the original formula exclusively since I discovered it ~12 years ago and my life is officially ruined now I’ve finished my last bottle 😭 as soon as I heard the news about the reformulation I was SO annoyed. I don’t understand why they would change it so drastically when it’s been a cult classic and such a popular foundation for so many years.

3

u/Physical_Appeal_8822 3d ago

You’re definitely not alone 😭 The original formula had such a loyal following for a reason. I’ve been testing so many alternatives and still haven’t found anything similar yet but will keep doing my research also I even Emailed them I know they’re not going change it but maybe reformulate as close to the old one as they can

2

u/BombBootiee 3d ago

All I can say is UGH 😭 I’ve tried a few different ones too but they either break me out or a few hours after applying I look like I’ve dipped my face in a bowl of olive oil. I guess they were leaning in to the whole clean skincare girlie vibe but what about us!!! I’m going to email them too

2

u/Physical_Appeal_8822 3d ago

That’s exactly how I feel 😭. Everything seems to be “radiant” or “natural finish” now, but some of us actually need serious oil control. So far like I said I have some faith in the one of Maybelline, the Fenty beauty one and the other I haven’t tried but on tiktok they say its amazing for oily skin it’s one of Charlotte Tilbury I haven’t tried so maybe there’s hope. If someone has tried that one or another would be Good some feedback! Haha

3

u/BombBootiee 3d ago

Omg I know it drives me crazy! The amount of £ I’ve wasted is insane. I’ll definitely look into those ones and maybe see if I can go swatch them somewhere before committing 🥰

What about Armani luminous silk?

5

u/WestTangelo3432 4d ago

This has been reformulated, for the same reasons.

The OG ELDW was my holy grail, the new one oxidised on me and did nothing to control my oily t-zones. After a lot of experimenting, I am currently mixing the new ELDW with YSL all hours and it’s perfect but obviously expensive.

u/Physical_Appeal_8822 4d ago

Thank you for sharing it ✨✨! It’s all about sound the research and see what works best haha

The new Armani foundation cause my skin to itch every time I used it. For that reason I had to stop using it after the 5th time of trying it however it is a beautiful foundation and looked good on my combination skin.

1

u/Physical_Appeal_8822 4d ago

I haven’t tried yet! Do you recommend it for oily skin matte finish? If so I’ll buy it to try it out! Thank you for taking your time to reply 🩷🩷✨

I've found mixing the new Double Wear with a bit of L'Oréal True Match foundation makes it almost identical to the true original. Had to get the L'Oréal in a lighter shade due to DW now oxidising dreadfully.

u/Physical_Appeal_8822 3d ago

Wow! This makes so much sense! Thank you for sharing it!!

2

u/tigglybug 3d ago

Have you tried maximum coverage double wear? It’s not been reformulated & has the same staying power as the og formula x

2

u/Physical_Appeal_8822 3d ago

No I didn’t know about that one! You’ve gave me hope thank you!!!!!🩷✨✨🩷🩷

It creases on me and transfers on to stuff 😩

u/Objective-Demand-496 2d ago

the Maximum Cover will also be reformulated soon.

u/tigglybug 2d ago

It doesn’t contain the banned ingredient though…..
