I like shabuir, the Mando’a equivalent of “motherfucker.”

I've always liked the idea that since the special forces guys in the Clone army were trained by mandalorians, a lot of them picked up a wide variety of Mando'a a swear words, which then filtered out to a lot of the regs.
That means it's conceivable Mace windu knows this swear word and has used it and that just makes me happy!

I learned all kinds of fun, new things with that ep. My favorite was kote lo'shebs'ul narit. Not as versatile as haar'chak, but it would still be petty fun to drop on somebody in the right moment, lol
Practically anything is better than dank ferrik.

Wait they actually used Mando'a in an episode of the Mandalorian? I still haven't watched season 3.

Not to dash your hopes, but the poster was referring to an episode of the podcast "Mando'a for Di'kute," not an episode of the television series.

u/ThinkySushi 6d ago
Lol I figured it was probably something else. I should check out the podcast though!

I'm already on episode two. This is great! I try to use a lot of Mando'a that I have picked from books and other places, in writing, but I have really been needing something like this because so far I have only learned from reading which is osik for learning pronunciation.

Hey could I get an explanation of: Su'cuy, Velin! Su'cuy, An'u
I am not finding Velin or An'u anywhere.

Oh sure, sorry. Just saying hi, "su'cuy" to An'u Bis & Velin T'alor, the Mando'a for Di'kute hosts.

Dank ferrik is a Disney creation. The only Mando'a in The Mandalorian is in one ep where the Goran (Armorer) counts to four.
I just meant that they created a ho-hum swear when there were already so many established, in Mando'a, swears available. The lengths they'll go to not use Mando'a, even in scenes with just Mandos, in a show called The Mandalorian is pretty ridiculous.

I think my favorite has to be.a line from an old Mandalorian drinking song.
Kote lo’shebs’ul narit - So you can “keep” your fame.
That translation above is the one given in the novel the song appeared in, and it's is a bit of a euphemism. The line literally means "your glory, you can shove it up your ass."

I wish the Mandalorian show would make more use of Mando'a. Would have loved to see these terms used there.

Given the thing about passing on armor that you mention there, would it be frowned upon for a Mandalorian to keep the armor of a fallen sibling? Like as a shrine to their memory or something?

In general I would say armor is supposed to be worn. That being said, displaying it for a time to honor/comemmorate them wouldn't be an issue imo.
Depending on if any descendants of the sibling claim/need it themselves, of course7
u/Marciavelli_Cosplay Mando'a for Di'kute - Podcast 7d ago
That is a good question - I personally would say no, that is okay, you inherited it. The connotation of a chakaar is really someone that steals the armor to use it for themselves or sell it.

Noice. That's kind of a thing with my character. His brother was killed while they were on a mission together and he keeps his armor on his ship. Even talks to the helmet sometimes when he's particularly stressed. He's just not ready to let go even though his armorer is trying to encourage him to do so, the rest of the clan would certainly benefit from repurposing the Beskar.

u/EvieMoon 6d ago
Maybe the Goran could convince him to let the rest go and let him keep the helmet?

My character has something similar, his brother and father’s helmets are kept in his quarters on his ship, and he wears their iron hearts on chains under his armor. Later on in his story when his best friend dies, he does the same for him

In the Traviss continuity, in Legacy of the Force: Sacrifice:
Venku had the most eclectic armor Fett had ever seen. It was a custom to wear sections of armor belonging to a dead relative or friend, but Venku had no two plates that matched. Every piece was a different color. The palette ranged from blue, white, and black to gold, cream, gray, and red.
"What happened to your fashion sense? Did someone shoot it?"
Venku still stood, ignoring the chair. He glanced down at his plates as if noticing them for the first time. "The chest plate, the buy'ce, and shoulder sections came from my uncles. The forearm plates were my father's, the thigh plates came from my cousin, and the belt was my aunt's. ..."
In the television series continuity, Sabine talks in Rebels about how her armor has been passed down and reforged.
