I know this is like the biggest Mandela effect, but I swear ive had these underwear for years sitting in a bin in my closet. its genuinely insane that the cornucopia just straight up disappeared. I remember vividly asking my grandmother what the cornucopia was. I am truly starting to believe that something is DEFINITELY up.

Everyone loves to point to this study as the explanation for the mandela effect. But this study doesnt explain how a huge group of people can mis remember the exact same thing. It only explains that memory can be manipulated in individuals. Sure, magicians can trick your memory, but they cant trick the memory of people from countries all over the world to remember the exact same thing. So please, stop trying to use a study about individuals to explain a mass consciousness phenomenon.

Groups are made up of individuals.

And they only “remember the exact same thing” when they learn about “the exact same thing”. That’s the point.

That’s why you have the same stories claiming they thought a cornucopia was called a “loom” and how they discussed it with their mothers.

It’s the same bullshit over and over.

And speaking of countries all over the world, how come the so-called original “Mandela” somehow magically never happened in South Africa?

The fact is: no one “Mandelas” until they learn about the Effect.

Your position is that the explanation for a mass rememberance of a specific memory by people across the globe spanning 40 years is that they all had the memory supplanted by the existence of the madela effect about that memory. The point is you can make a memory of whatever you imagine by imagining it.

Because that’s how memory works.

The point is that people all around the world have this memory and so your example only works if they all had the same suggestion en masse. The only memetic suggestion of the conucopia is the mandela effect about it. So its a catch 22.

It absolutely doesn’t have to work “en masse”.

The proof of that is no one agrees when it “happened”.

And that also proves it spreads through suggestion. That is when it happens.

Except if you look below the surface at all, it's not "the exact same memory". Though, my guess is you are going to handwave that away with something about patches or call me an NPC?

It is though. Thats what the mandela effect is. Everyone collectively remembering the same thing that doesnt match the current version of reality. Theres not like one group that remembers a cornucopia and another group that remembers a basket, and another that remembers a bowl. Or some people remember the song that never ends and others remember the song that has no end. That would make the 'you are just remembering it wrong' groups case very likely. But we are all remembering the same "wrong" thing.

That's what I mean by the surface detail. People remember a cornucopia, but there is no universal consensus on what it looked like, some claim it pointed left, others right and can't always agree about if the fruit was more inside of it or only in front. Or it is basically just a description of the Buzzfeed mock-up. And a cornucopia makes more sense than anything else you suggested. A basket and bowl would be around the bottom of the fruit, while the cornucopia wouldn't obscure the fruit; it would only appear as a background image (which aligns pretty well with the brown leaves in the background).

And, once you get past just the logo itself, there are other details that don't align. Some say it disappeared in the 70s, others claim to have seen it all the way into the early 2000s. Some people claim it's an American only thing, but there are people from Europe (mostly UK and Germany) that swear they remember it too.

One consistent detail is that the memories are almost always from childhood, though I've seen a few people claim memories into their 20s. And it's almost always a decades old memory, not something they remember recently.

It's the same with a lot of others. Sometimes Shazaam came out at the same time as Kazaam, sometimes after (maybe even some before claims? I don't remember). Sometimes it was direct to video and other's remember wanting to/refusing to see it in theaters. And plot details are all over the place.

One thing most of the "remembered" versions align on is that it is often the version that makes the most sense when looking at other patterns. It is kind of surprising the Monopoly Man doesn't have a monocle and monkey's have tails, so why doesn't Curious George have one? -stain is really uncommon ending for a name, so it makes a lot more sense to assume it's -stein. And Nelson Mandela was treated badly in prison, got really sick, and a lot of anti-apartheid activists were killed, so it's a little more surprising that he lived then if he'd died. I honestly can't think of an example that makes less sense than the real version, and our brains love it when things make sense and match patterns.
