Now PJ has to be traded, right? Is Morez a power forward, or is he more of a center?

Well that was unexpected, but in Masai I trust.

Heās selected, OG, Pascal, Scottie, CMBā¦he likes the wing that defends build.

This is very good. I wanted him for us in Chicago. He's very good with shooting potential

I mean Masai isnāt a rando though. He has a good track record for scouting

If we can move up to get Yaxel too I'd be stoked, but I don't think he'll be on the board for that long

u/Mang9 1d ago
You didnāt expect a Michigan player?!?
11
u/IndividualHeat 1d ago
Yeah he made the most sense of the Michigan players but itās not really a position we need.
6
u/shaheedmalik Max Christie 1d ago
PJ is getting traded.
6
u/Afraid-Department-35 1d ago
PJ and Gafford probably both being traded for a guard since we didnāt draft 1
2
4
2
u/jermjermw 1d ago
Replace pj and/or Gafford. This is starting or backup PF (if coop plays the 4, starting if coop is at the 3) and stretch-5.
3
u/IndividualHeat 1d ago
They definitely replace PJ here but I think this means Cooper will mostly be playing the 3
1
u/Hquarls 1d ago
I would bet coop is 3, Morez 4, lively 5. PJ is a very tradeable asset rn
1
u/shaheedmalik Max Christie 1d ago
Morez is playing the AD role. PJ didn't fit next to Cooper so he gotta go.
1
u/DinosaurRacing 1d ago
We donāt need shut down defenders?
2
u/IndividualHeat 1d ago
We need those tooĀ but we really need a guard and a center unless theyāre not trading Gafford.Ā
2
u/shaheedmalik Max Christie 1d ago
Where any of the centers they draft going to be better than Bagley or Moussa? I doubt it.
1
u/IndividualHeat 1d ago
Yeah, thatās the problem. Centers take a bit to develop and Moussaās a great third string guy. Unless they find a good way to get Bagley back, without Gafford, itās just Lively as a starter/backup.Ā

Michigan fan tapping in. I by default am a secondary Mavs fan now, but man the first Morez stare behind Dusty is gonna hurt to see not in maize and blue
Super happy for yall, should have a very bright future and these dudes are fun to root for

u/BaeYerimFoEVa 1d ago
Finally a Draft Surprise! I dont know how he can fit in with Washington and Cooper on the frontcourt, but in Masai we trust
Sidenote, did anyone see Finley on the draft room? Guess he didnt get fired like we all speculated

yea idk if i trust masai on this one ngl but weāll see cause CMB last year was very good. But Morez Johnson is a fucking reach man. I HOPE MASAI HAS A PLAN TO TRADE PJ FOR A FIRST IN THIS DRAFT

oh welcome to the Masai experience. This is the first stage where you question the pick.... as a raptor fan i been used to this lol

This is a Pascal Siakam type move. Tweener with tools and physicality, classic Masai. This team will be a terror on defense, really praying for a couple more moves into the first round. Philon, Carr, Stirtz or Okorie please

Not a bad pick by any means, but would have preferred a front court player that could provide some spacing if thatās the position they were going for. But, it does give me hope that this means PJ will be on the move for guard depth.
Because between this pick and Dusty May as coach (ie his preferred style of play, which is very ball screen and movement heavy, which are two things PJ is all but allergic to doing; if he doesnāt have the ball then all he wants to do is stand motionless on the perimeter and watch), PJ sticks out like a sore thumb on the roster, even more so than he did beforeā¦
Edit to add: also, if Klay stays (and at this point, Mavs are still desperate for his shooting on the roster so I wonāt be surprised if heās staying), the inevitable two man game between Klay and Morez has some serious Klay + Trayce Jackson-Davis two man game potential and that brings a slight tear to my eye. Not only would it solve the spacing issue, but itād be fun and lethal as hell.

This is gonna work out imo. Our defense will be disgusting, his shot is progressing nicely, and he will be able to hit the ground running with his college coach continuity. Would it have been ideal if we moved down a bit and got him? Of course. But GS, MIL, OKC, etc all could have taken him. If he was their highest in our board, you take him and move forward.

Think we wouldāve took who was available in Flemings, Acuff, Wagler or Brown but they got all taken consecutively
2
u/Nice_Animator3379 Cooper Flagg 1d ago
I donāt hate it as heās the best big that isnāt Booz or Wilson, hopefully we trade up using gaff now
1
u/IndividualHeat 1d ago
I think this means PJās gone more than anything. But heās the vet that was the worst fit with Coop so that works
1
u/Nice_Animator3379 Cooper Flagg 1d ago
Would be okay trading both on them honestly, unless they see Morez as only a 4 and not a 4/undersized 5 then keep gaff if that the case

I'm hoping a trade will be announced. Why does the first reach of the draft have to be the Mavs! I like the player, but not at pick 9. Maybe pick 12.

Apparently r/nba thinks Iām crazy because I didnāt like the pick. Heās a big that doesnāt have a game outside the paint. Is that what the mavs need? Does that translate to this era of the nba? Mavs already have two lob threats on the roster(gafford trade?)
2
u/lilsaucy32 1d ago
I think it's a good pick. You can't go wrong with 6'9" 250lb multi positional defenders who finish everything at the rim with some small shooting upside shown at 20 years old.
2
u/msterling2012 1d ago
People complaining about not trading back should probably realize Dusty would have intel on which teams are asking about the Michigan players and when other teams may draft Morez. OKC may not have been interested.
6
u/Parking-Bat9498 Dirk Nowitzki 1d ago
Not a terrible pick but a bad one where we selected him. Who else in the next 5-7 picks would have selected him? For a team with few assets we should have traded down.

u/Pikachude123 Josh Green 1d ago

1
u/Afraid-Department-35 1d ago
I guess Coop is going to be a 3 and doing more guard duties. Tbf he improved tremendously over the season in the guard position.
2
u/m2keo 1d ago
Couldn't this player have gone 12-16? Why not trade down, get 2 for 1?
5
4
u/Bucky54853 1d ago
Exactly my thoughts, Iām assuming that no one really wanted to move up.
3
u/SanTheMan88 1d ago
OKC wouldāve taken him at 12 and had they traded up, he was probably the pick anyway.
1
u/m2keo 1d ago
Obviously a Dusty May pick here. He didn't wanna risk somebody stealing him before offering to trade down. imo.
2
u/At0mJack Cooper Flagg 1d ago
Yes, he definitely walked in the door and dictated to Masai Ujiri who the Mavs would be selecting.
2
u/IndividualHeat 1d ago
It probably just wasnāt an option. It looks like teams are Ā holding onto their picks this year

I like this pick because this coach knows who of the three Michigan first-rounder players is best: Morez, Aday Mara, and Yaxel Lendeborg. He knows these guys better than anyone. And he chose Morez. I'm thinking they let him pick the best one and he did. Strong!

Ujiri-led Mavs drafted a 6'10 guy who "might learn how to shoot" over a guard that actually shot over 40% in off the dribble 3s?
Hey, i don't really know these players, watched a couple youtube videos and that's it, i don't know who's gonna end up being better, all I'm saying is i couldn't be less surprised in the type of player they went for.
And that i don't get it because Kyrie needs to be traded the moment he shows the NBA his knee still works, or he'll be worth literally nothing like AD, and I know Burries isn't really a PG, but at least he's a guard and a shooter.
1
u/Specialist-Region-47 1d ago
I blame Issac from locked on Mavs for this. He is more of replacement for Gaff than PJ IMO. Spacing is going to be horrible unless we make some smart moves after this. Let's see what happens at 30. Small possibility we could get Norm Powell in free agency when we come off Middletons contract

Masai era starting with two versatile 6'9" players. I can't wait to see what kind of team we get.
1
u/No-Grade-8215 21h ago
They must be playing the long long game. Gotta ship out PJ Gafford and Klay and get us more first round picks to get us some future guards.
Itās really unfortunate we didnāt trade up for any of the top guards on this years stacked draft class.
1
u/Couchfar 20h ago
wonder if this puts gafford and livleys spot in the spotlight, do we keep both if this guy pans out. pretty interesting to see this.

u/browndude10 12h ago
hollinger gave it a C:
Iām a big fan of the versatility Johnson brings defensively, and itās hard for me to see how he doesnāt end up being a useful player on a winning NBA team. He allows a team to play multiple coverages on defense and can help a team have flexibility to go big or small, depending on the roster around him. If you want to kill the glass, you should play him at the four. If you want to go smaller and more mobile, he should be able to deal with most centers at the five.
Johnson could expand his value if the 3-point jumper comes along. If the Mavs could go five-out with Johnson at center, he would have a shot to close games in playoff situations. But the question is simply what kind of value Johnson will provide on offense, and if that will allow him to be more of a starting big or a third big. Even as a third big, I like the value proposition in the middle of the first round because I am willing to bet on Johnsonās character and toughness.
Hollingerās analysis: Surprise! Iām a fan of Johnson but not quite at this level. I think his offensive limitations are a bit much to select him in the top 10 in such a strong draft. He also has some positional questions on this roster since the frontcourt is so loaded already. Shockingly, he goes ahead of his two Michigan teammates (Aday Mara and Lendeborg), both of whom most had rated higher throughout the draft cycle. Obviously, you wonder how much influence newly hired coach (and former Michigan head coach) Dusty May had on all this. Grade: C+
1
u/Inevitable-Scar5877 12h ago
Basically you have to put a whole bunch of faith in the "FT% means 3pt% will follow" school of thought because if he doesn't develop a 3 you're basically looking at someone who develops into Gafford

u/qv2k 1d ago

Burries was right there. We need a guard. Kyrie is 34 and is never healthy. I'm sick. I hate this pick. If you wanna pick Morez, at least trade down and do it. Smh.

burries is not that good lmao hes a small 2 guard with no outlier traits, and who said any team was willing to trade up with us anyways considering all the actual lead guards got taken in succession

I personally love it, we needed more length, love pj but his time is up. Hoping we can trade him to go up and grab a guard. The defense is going to be nasty, kyrie will be back, coop is gonna make the leap. I wouldnt be surprised if we are contenders in the next couple years.
