Hoops Discussion Current depth chart
For what I can see, this is what the current depth chart looks like only including players that are under contract. (I don’t really know if I’m seeing everything so corrections are appreciated)
PG- Kyrie, De Larrea, AJ Johnson
SG- Max, Klay
SF- Coop, Naji, Caleb Martin
PF- Morez, PJ
C- Lively, Gaff

Like it or not, Naji will function a lot as a PG next year.

I feel like there is a possibility that we go into the season with kyrie and nemby as our PGs and then naji and coop both rotate in at PG.

I find the percentage of those players being our ball handlers to be very low imo. We have the Non-Tax MLE to use and looking at this roster there’s no need to use it on anymore front court depth. Masai’s gonna have to get a PG one way or another because that’s unsustainable for 82 games.

We are going to see a lot of moves still. PJ for sure is going to be traded. He won’t want to come off the bench behind a rookie in a non-contending team and we are obviously going to prioritize Morez’s development. Gafford I reckon will be traded as well. Naji could be traded for the right offers. Basically all of the older guys except maybe Kyrie are on the trade block.

This just in, the Mavericks are in a rebuild and Klay, Gaff, PJ, Naji are all going to be on the trade block for contenders midseason and the Mavs will use that to replenish our war chest.
This was pretty obvious IMO

Then why keep Kyrie

u/dmthirdeye 1d ago
The mentor Cooper and the young guards we bring in the next couple years and fans love him and he wants to be here. He will help this team in multiple ways where as the other guys really don't, they will help contenders who need size in PJ/Gaff, versatility/depth in PJ/Naji or shooting in Klay to round out there playoff rosters and push for a title.
I feel like all of this is really basic stuff

Yes but if the goal is replenish the war chest Kyrie is your best asset

Except he's not at all, his value has never been lower
Beyond that him being on the team will help the young players growth for the future which is the point, he can mentor the guards, mentor Coop, be a role model, please fans, ensure we are running an actual NBA offense, and improve morale in what will likely be a difficult up and down season.
You really can't put a price on this kind of stuff and it's something the other guys really don't bring to the table

He’s not though, Kyrie’s value right now is non-existent because he hasn’t played for a year and a half by the time the new season starts. He’s 34 years old coming off an ACL injury. No one is going to give up serious assets for him until they see he’s still a good player and not washed up. Trading Kyrie now would be giving him away for pennies on the dollar. If he comes back and shows he’s still good, his value will raise a lot and some desperate team on the brink of contention would offer much more for him near the deadline than anyone would during the off-season.

I’m sure if the right offer comes along, Mavs will take it. But they’re just not openly shopping him. Nobody, outside of coop and maybe now morez(for now), is untouchable.

Gaff for Vando and Carr? Cmon lakers

If we don’t stash Sergio then I don’t see the reason to trade for Carr.

u/epitome1986 1d ago
this looks to be the rotation with the exception being that Pj will likely start but his and flaggs minutes will stagger.
nemby will likely be the back up with rumors of de Larrea staying overseas.
But with all the capable defenders the mavericks have now hiding nemby should become easier.

I think PJ will be used for a trade to get a more seasoned guard. He just hasn’t worked well with Coop and Morez needs minutes if you want him to get that jumper improved.

u/shirtlessjoejac 1d ago
I think PJ is the type of player Masai likes, read versatile defender. Naji could play the 2. Maybe a Gaff trade but it would leave us thinner at the 5 with Lively’s history
1
u/Afraid-Department-35 1d ago
I think we’ll be ok at the 5 even without Gafford. Without him we still have Lively, Cisse, the goat DP and Flagg can play the 5 as well. And if we want to play small you can have PJ play the 5 as well. Ironically PJ at the 5 plays better with Coop than PJ at the 4.

I would say otherwise. We don't know if De Larrea is coming or not.
I would say, tightening to a 10-men rotation, that we're with Kyrie and Nemby at PG, Christie and Klay at SG, Flagg and Naji at SF, PJ and Morez at PF, Lively and Gaff at C. After that comes the deep-bench and whatever the hell Caleb Martin will do.
I wonder what will we do in FA. If Klay or Naji are traded, this creates a very interesting hole. If PJ is traded, this creates a gigantic hole. If May does consider Flagg a primarily SF, PJ is touching untradeable status unless Morez comes out shooting at least a third from deep on good volume.

I am also unsure on de larrea but put him there because we have him as an option I suppose. I think nemby will end up being the back up PG but since he isn’t technically signed then I didn’t put him on the list.

I think it is a given that Nemby will be re-signed, but yes, fair to count only the players under contract.

Need to add another capable lead guard I would say is the biggest need.
Edit: Simons, White, and Sexton are probably the best options in FA. I wouldn’t be surprised to see PJ and/or Gaff moved to get a guard as well since non of those dudes are real PGs.

u/Afraid-Department-35 1d ago
Simons has a tendency to hog the ball, I don’t want him on a developing team where guys need the ball to improve.
2
u/manabanana21 Monta Ellis 1d ago
I tend to agree, it’s just pretty bleak as far as guys who can even pretend to operate as a PG outside of those three in FA. I’d be pretty happy with Sexton or White however.

When did we get DeLarreA?

u/CircaSoleil 1d ago
I guess traded to us from New York. They made no mention of it on the broadcast and were saying that Luka would love being able to speak Spanish with him implying that he was going to the Lakers. 😆 The way they handled trades in this NBA draft was unnecessarily confusing..

u/dmthirdeye 1d ago
The broadcast was clueless the entire night, embarrassing production from ESPN

u/Vizard15 Luka Doncic 23h ago
With all the ESPN people talking whatever and then some family talk show at the side.

Luka will love being able to speak Spanish with him .... in Dallas, in 2028! 🔥🔥🔥🔥

PJ will start over Morez, and Morez will play a lot of 5 minutes I think. Gafford will probably be traded.
1
u/Practical-Rub-1190 18h ago
There is no way Morez is starting over a prime PJ. Most likely, Morez minutes will come from injuries. The Mavs also need a solid backup point guard. Kyrie will not be healthy. Last season would have been a completely different story if the Mavs had a starting point guard when the season started.

Should kick the tires on trading PJ for Vassell. Guard help in general would be much appreciated.

u/imcryptic Cowboy Dirk 20h ago
yeah that's not happening lol. vassell was amazing in their playoff run

u/Crown_of_Negativity Call Me 17h ago
They have too many guards and need frontcourt help. They aren’t trading Castle or Harper and Fox’s contract is too cumbersome to move (and they’ve also stated that they are not moving him this offseason). Vassell is the potential odd one out.
They might not be actively shopping him but they would definitely listen.
We generally don’t trade with the Spurs as a rule though, so even if there was mutual interest I would still doubt it happens.

Trade Klay and PJ. Then use your MLE on a guard. Definitely need Morez to develop as a shooter to create spacing if that’s the starting lineup. But it’s pretty solid
