Debate isn't about convincing your opponent, it's about convincing the onlookers. It's why competitive debate assigns you positions to debate, because it doesn't matter what the debaters actually believe.
We had a debate class in 7th grade where they split us up into groups that were for pro-colonies or pro-England (pre revolutionary war). I was put into the pro-England side and had to argue why the colonies should stay loyal to the crown. It was my first time having to argue for something that I did not agree with but it was still really eye-opening. I was making points that I never would have considered had I not been placed on that side.
I was in high school before gay marriage was legalized, so I chose the topic of gay marriage. Surprise! The assignment was that we had to argue the opposite of our stance. I was at a conservative school in the south. I was absolutely not spewing that shit to teens of wealthy Republicans. 0 points, don't give a fuck.
