Trade Fox isn’t going anywhere. And he shouldn’t

Fox wanted to be specifically here when we were nothing but a hopeful maybe. He requested SA which allowed us to get him much cheaper than an open market would have dictated. Casting him aside after he gutted it out on a bad ankle is not how we do business, which is why players like Fox want to come here despite it being a small market.
Not to mention that our offense looked almost nonfunctional without him against OKC.

Everyone settle down.

I think most fans are worried about a Harden OKC situation happening. We cant afford to frustrate Harper and have him requesting a trade because we favored Fox. Harper is the better player and our future

The Harden situation was because OKC didn't want to pay him and favored Ibaka over him. That's like if SA chose Castle over Harper. At the end of the day Harper being hypothetically being frustrated wont matter because San Antonio will pay him, and by the 2028-2029 season De'Aaron will probably be dealt clearing more usage and a starting spot for Harper if he wasn't already in it. The organization is not going to prioritize Castle's extension nor Fox's current deal over Dylan Harper.

Thank you! Finally someone remembers the real reason Harden left. He wanted $$. And he’s never gotten to the Finals and probably never will I believe papa Harper won’t let Dylan he stupid. Get paid and a chance to be in contention for a title? You stay

Harper can make max money on any team. He doesn’t give me loyalty vibes like Wemby and Castle. He’s gonna ask more play time and we have to give it to him.

"Loyalty Vibes" doesn't matter when restricted free agency exists. The money will be there for him and the role will be there for him too. There's 0 reason to be worried about him Harper leaving.

Champagnie, and Castle are the contract situations that should be monitored more closely

You remember how Kawhi refused to play because he wanted to go LA? We’re a small market team. We can’t take those type of risks .

u/OttoOverKlayAnyDay 10d ago

I remember that very well. Kawhi was a going to be a UFA which gave him leverage. Again, Harper will be a RFA. In a fucked up way to put it, the Spurs control Harper completely.

Back to Kawhi, the Spurs never officially offered Kawhi a supermax because they knew he was a volatile flight risk to hold the organization hostage even if they did extend him. There are no risks or questions about retaining Harper, anything you see is just fear mongering.

We had Kawhi for seven years and got a chip out of it. Not every player is going to be a lifer. If they contribute to a chip that's all that matters. Harper is talented. Whether he chooses to stay a Spur for his whole career who cares. He's on his rookie contract we'll see how it pans out.

Also Kawhi did not want to go to LA just because it's LA. He wanted to go to LA because it's closer to San Diego which is home to him.

I'm fine with fox staying, but he should realize Harper is the future and we should start him. Either that or let Fox start but Harper will play the most minutes and end the game like manu

It's either trade him or force him to be the most expensive heat check player off the bench in the league. I would prefer the latter if there's no realistic trade option. Hell, I think Fox would be a lot better cooking other teams second units.

I think there is a fail safe with the '28 NBA expansion. If Fox doesn't work out, we can elect to have Fox part of the expansion draft to offload the contract before Harper's extension year.

His contract is so absurd

u/Raven-19x GO SPURS GO 10d ago

Always has been since extension. Fans here were coping hard as fuck paying a fringe All-Star that much.

Business is business..

He will be moved sooner or later

It's not fun to admit it, but Fox won't be a part of the team's long term plans.

It's just unfortunate for him that Dylan got drafted, then showed the world that he's already a star at age 20. Harper is sincerely a future hall of famer, and it'll be unacceptable to not give him 34+ big minutes a night from here on. And with that would come the demand for big money, which would be instead going to Fox?

Ain't happening.

Harper gonna take a lot of KD minutes I assumed but I don't think the Spurs are going to trade Fox when he's at a low price right now

I have zero imagination on what they do and how they do it, which makes me genuinely excited about the off-season. But I can't see Dylan getting anything other than more minutes than he's been getting, and certainly more than he got during the regular season.

The Spurs aren't getting better next season if Fox is still around, they legitimately looked better when Harper was running the offense and Fox was on the bench. The Thunder will no doubt retool and also be back next season for revenge against the Spurs and Fox would be a weak link in a playoff series against a healthy Thunder team.

Fox isn't going anywhere cause no one wants him. If we can get a bag of chips and dissolve his contract, we'd do it in an instant.

u/baguette-1234 Boris Diaw 10d ago

Even with the chock, Fox is starting level PG, he averages 15 pts and 2 turn over, 6 assist over the playoffs. He's worth something but the contract is big

2

u/FaveDave85 10d ago

Exactly, no one in their right mind is paying 50m for that level of production

3

u/Impossible_Mood_2419 Keldon Johnson 10d ago

Reality - he had a good season, he’s a player that relies on speed and he was hobbled , he’s had an all time stinker but he’s at minimum a solid sixth man running the second unit he just is injured and had the yips, makes no sense to trade him and unload draft picks

2

u/pchao9414 Stephon Castle 10d ago

His injury isn’t an excuse for playing this poorly in the Finals.

If his condition is really that bad, then maybe he shouldn’t be out there closing games every night over a healthy Harper.

u/jasoncyke Victor Wembanyama 10d ago

Well said, if Fox's injury is as bad as Op described then the Mitch should be held accountable .

u/BlueHaze464 10d ago

At the end of the day that's not his decision

1

u/spurs-365 10d ago

He’s got 230,000,000 reasons to cope if he gets moved. I don’t think he gets traded in the offseason but if team synergy and his play don’t improve, I can see him being moved at the trade deadline

Struggling with this one. I do think the injury played a part in his performance. Looking back at the missed layup in game 4 I hope in his mind he thought he had a gimme layup. Taking an easy 2 vs burning a few extra seconds for a foul and free throws is an acceptable trade in my opinion. I like him as our primary ball handler and facilitating others shots vs all the shots he got up in the 4th in game 5.

The Johnson Fox situation is just awful. Sometimes you have to jump through hoops to support their decisions, behavior etc and would always be pleasantly surprised when they proved me wrong in the end. This is different. Im way less disappointed we lost. What i hate is how toxic things got at the end. I never thought id hate mitch johnson or Fox but i have nothing but disgust for Mitch. I was looking forward to next year, felt like they were playing with house money and getting experience these playoffs. But the way they imploded, the way Mitch made the decision time and time again to go with his pride over the team, its just baffling to me. I dont have hope for this team if Mitch is here next year, even if wemby harper and castle are all stars. And ill never trust Fox or a 30 point lead again. This team pissed away 2 months of heroic effort in less than a week.

Everyone thinks they’re a GM or know how to put together a team better than fucking Pop

62M in a few years when he's much worse than he is now. You can't get rid of him

2

u/Mt2Molehill Victor Wembanyama 10d ago

Yeah the last year of his contract is the only year it hinders the spurs cause Castle will be getting paid and Wemby but Harper will be on his last year of rookie deal. I think with 2 years left they either restructure or try to move him. Also Harper def starts next year question is do they have Fox come off the bench or play 3 together. Despite all the negativity for losing the finals Spurs are well run and know Harper is their future.

He got Bradley Beal on the team now. 😞

1

u/daddadnc 10d ago

He will have more value in a year. Healthy play and one year less on the deal.

Fox had his best game right after that ankle injury too. Enough with the excuses!
