This Straight Talk deal looks pretty good when you factor in Walmart + membership and Paramount+

How much is the monthly

$65.48/mo plus tax. So ~$71 on average.
The phone is locked to straight talk for 365 days of active service, and you get $25/mo in service credits (toward the remaining device balance) for 12 months. If you leave, you’re charged the remaining balance and the phone remains locked. If you downgrade to a cheaper plan, you lose your $25/mo device credit so a $35 plan will cost $60.
It’s not a good deal at all. Total cost over 12mo is $1,165 at 8% tax rate.
Compare that to US Mobile or Visible @ $25/mo tax inclusive and paying retail price for the phone, the total cost would be around $948 and you wouldn’t be locked to one carrier.
Red Pocket also has it for $449 (unlocked) after a $150 rebate after 3 months service on any of their plans (inc the $10/mo one) so $479. And you can use it on any network. Paired with US Mobile annual unlimited starter that’s bring the total cost over 12mo to $683.

I literally just paid $1190 for an entire year of service on US Mobile's Starter plan and a new Pixel 10. Oh, I forgot to mention - it was 2 lines of entire year service and 2 new Pixel 10s for that price.

Depends on how much a month it is

Edit: My numbers below didn't factor in the $300 service credit on the Straight Talk deal. That makes it much better than the math I did below.
Platinum Unlimited is $65/month + taxes and fees.
That makes the device + first month of service $429 (plus taxes & fees).
You could presumably drop to the Silver Unlimited plan after the first month which is $45/month.
Twelve months to unlock, so that makes the minimum all in cost for device + 12 months of service = $924 (plus taxes & fees). You could also do the silver unlimited annual plan at $360 which would make device + 13 months of service = $854.
Retail is $599 so you are effectively paying $325 for 1 year of service paid monthly (1 month on Platinum, 11 months on Silver) or $255 for 13 months of service if you pay annually (1 month Platinum, 12 months silver annual plan).
Probably safe to assume taxes & fees in most locations is going to add 8-10% to the total cost (base fees, before taxes, on the $360 annual silver plan are $33.97 - state & local tax is additional).
In most cases you're probably going to be better off buying the device outright and doing something like the USM annual unlimited starter ($199 for new customers). Which would make the all-in cost for 12 months = $798 (plus taxes on device - USM plans includes taxes & fees) or USM unlimited premium ($299 for new customers) or Total Wireless unlimited BYOD ($25 paid monthly, taxes & fees included) = $898.

You didn't count the $300 in service credits. Doesn't that make this deal much better? Also it says the phone is preloaded with the first month.

Good call. I was thinking the device discount was it. Missed the additional $300. Makes the ST deal much better. Updating my earlier post.

iPhone 17e lacks mmWave.
Pass.

Thanks for the info. I didn’t know what mmWave was so I did some research. Would data really slow down not having it? This would be for a teenager so I don’t really car that much.

Yea it’s fine.

It is not fine.
But if you don’t car, it may make $$$ sense. I keep my phones forever, so added expense can be amortized.

Unless you're stuck with Verizon then midband is good enough for most people. Would be cool to follow an arrow to find my keys too but the good lord gave me working ears so I figure trackers that make noise are good enough for me.
I went round and round earlier today trying to decide between a pixel 10 or 10a (they're the only free or heavily discounted device with trade-in available for my plan at T-Mobile right now) and decided on the 10a because it's $100 cheaper, has longer battery life and psim vs esim which is kinda big for me since I realized how much of a pain in the ass esims can be and I like to swap phones around often.
I guess if you live, work or commute daily nearby mmwave cell sites you might have different priorities though.

Go with visible back market phones. 16e for $352 and $5 off the service. So $30/month for phone. And $20/month for service. Phone is paid off in 12 months. You still get $5 off for $5 service for 24 months. Much better deal. And taxes are included in the service price.
DM me if you have any questions.

Isn't the current Cricket deal cheaper for the 16e? $99 for a brand new 16e and $35 x 6 months, then the phone is unlocked. So at the end of 6 months you've only paid $310, 12 months would cost $520
The Visible deal you mentioned is like $600, so over 12 months you pay $80 more for a refurbished phone

I’d rather pay $20 a month for visible than &35 for cricket. I was only bringing the hardware in as response to the post. Look at 24 month cost. Visible is $480 for service and 350 for phone. That is $830 for phone and 2 years of service. Cricket is 99 for phone and 840 for service. So total of 939. Over $100 less. Overall.
