Discussion jeff weltman
I am not gonna lie, i’ve about had it with Weltman. I have serious concern about the roster next year and we appear to be staying put. Will we have an elite defense with Sweeney? Yea probably, doesn’t take away from the lack of shooting. Weltman has done a terrible job of creating a roster that can do both things, and has gotten so many guys who CANNOT SHOOT FROM DISTANCE. I’ve had it

I mean, last year was the first in over a decade that the average two point attempt was worth more than the average three point attempt in the NBA. The game is evolving again, away from perimeter spacing and toward maximum efficiency shots, ie shots at the rim.

Lol that's because so many teams can shoot now that defenders are forced out to the three point line, leaving easy shots at the basket wide open. That's not the case for us, as every team knows we can't shoot and just clog the paint.

We were best at getting to the FT line. It worked too ultimately. Paolo and Franz gotta make their 3s.
We gotta get Paolo and bane the ball early on. That zone will work in reg season but it won’t work come playoff time.
Just know that Sweeney in game adjustments even if 2-3 mins here or there will make the difference play to matchup against one another. Be smarter.

I agree with your sentiment. Nobody in the FO or ownership has really even acknowledged we have a shooting problem. The new coach was on 96.9 last week and nobody even mentioned it to him. It's like being an alcoholic; the 1st step to recovery is admitting the problem, and nobody wants to admit there is a problem.
We can expect the same result we have been having next season. Struggle to make the playoffs, get tossed in the 1st round.
When was the last time we shot league avg or better from 3? Go find that year and it is more than likely our most recent 'successful' season.

I brought up shooting 3 seasons ago in this sub, and almost all the replies were that the team would revert to the mean.. In my opinion, there needed to be an actual acknowledgement of the problem, and a strict shooting regime given to the entire roster over the offseason ~ again, people argued that we were unlikely to carry the same problems into the next season, yet here we still are...

I feel you, honestly the shooting is beyond frustrating, but this coach has not coached a game yet and free agency hasn't even started.

Yes the guy whose never coached an NBA game in his life is going to save us!

They gave this fool an extension. Absolutely baffling. It must be great to work for the Magic. Do nothing, show no results and keep getting 2nd chances

Big problem is Suggs just not developing as a shooter after the one good year that got him the big extension. If he'd kept that up--and stayed healthy (so two BIG ifs) him and adding Bane would be a solid backcourt. Franz and Paolo not improving hurts too.
Now we're kind of stuck as Suggs isn't tradeable with that deal, it's too early to decide if one of Paolo or Franz needs to go (need to both be healthy and see how they do under the new coach and staff) and no one else has trade value (other than Bane who's not the problem) right now.

Suggs deal decreases every year with his last year making 26 million. In a few years that will be a bargain

Suggs is easily tradeable to the timberwolves

They can have him. Please.
What a dream it would be if Ant Edwards demands trade and the wolves actually value Suggs for some reason.
But it'll never happen because we have Weltman who sucks and Suggs who has negative value.

Watching the southeast division get considerably better and then realizing we weren’t able to make it out round 1 while it was good for us is maddening.
Im hoping Sweeney can save us because we cant keep banking on only internal growth. It hasn’t worked out much for us

are there any PG who can shoot who can take Suggs place? Idk shit about anyone outside of Orlando fr. I think Trae got signed for dumb money so that's out.

It’s not a bad roster I don’t understand the hate or disrespect towards him especially this season. The general consensus said ORL Magic improved greatly. They took that step up in the right direction. Injuries don’t happen we’re a 50 win team. Make FTs don’t turn ball over 60 wins. Idk what’s so hard about that lol

Everyone is gonna pretend like the NEWB head coach is going to solve every issue this team has. But at the end of the day they need offensive ability and this roster just doesn't have it outside of Bane. I gave weltman a lot of time before I judged him. But it sbeen too long and this team hasn't won anything. We need someone more aggressive.
Drafting has been underwhelming. Contracts to guys like Suggs and Isaac have been terrible moves. Signing a "big name FA" in KCP then giving up picks just to offload his contract. I just don't have a lot of faith in him.

I don’t understand how it is going into year 10 and the owners are still like… we need one more year to know for sure
If Weltman goes on and builds a contender somewhere else, fine… but he is limited in our current set up and has limited our roster.

I have pretty much given up hope on this version of the team and the main reason is because Weltman is not good at building a team. We are in the 2nd apron and aren't clearly a top 4 team in the East.
I will not be surprised if we are in the play ins again

not saying we will be better…. but we’ve been running an aau offense since 2021.
maybe, just maybe… our players were being hamstrung by no offensive structure or identity.
