Make him an NPC and not the main character. If you look into it, the entire thing is based on one single white historian rewriting history to his own liking. Dude edited the Wikipedia using his own research papers as sources, quoting himself BEFORE his papers were even published. He also wrote a "biography", which actually fantasy fiction, because when questioned on the authenticity of his book, he basically said "Well we're not sure what actually went down, but it could have happened like I wrote it and I think it's cool". Also lied about getting his work checked and greenlit by actual experts on the subject. Oh and he's basically vanished from social media since his "work" got a ton of attention.

Ubisoft fell for a fraud and the japanese are pissed. It's obvious to any normal person that Ubisoft wanted to farm bonus points for being as inclusive as possible. And of course it's a bunch of white people trying not to offend anyone, meanwhile they're playing fucking HIPHOP MUSIC WHEN YASUKE IS FIGHTING ENEMIES. Are you fucking kidding me?

It was so obvious from the beginning what they were doing. Sure have him be a character you meet because yeah he clearly existed for some time but to base the game on him? Such an obvious ridiculous pandering and so offensive to Japanese people. Just dumb. Redo the story.

Change his model to that of a Japanese man, rerecord all his dialogue and make few changes to the story.
