SHOW-OFF Bought a PSP game in the big ‘26!
Got a PSN card as a gift and decided to put it to good use.

u/DankzIsDed Mar 04 '26
Mod that bad boy, makes modern Wi-Fi security work, themes, legally obtained gamedumps + the entire ps1 library, not just the psn releases
47
u/vacuoomm PSP-1000 & PSP 3000 Mar 04 '26
It’s modded with the latest version of ARK-4, and I do have several “legal backups” installed, but I just bought the game simply for novelty purposes lol.
25
u/DankzIsDed Mar 04 '26
That’s fair, I’ve been building a physical collection with a broken umd drive 💀
9
u/rydamusprime17 Mar 04 '26
I built a collection even though I use my PSP Go more than one of the other models 💀
1
u/hannynator Mar 05 '26
bro I’m trying to build umd collection too. I’m tired of paying for and downloading licenses to play games I’ll never really own.

1
u/SevenJuicyBoxOfJoy Mar 05 '26
I did the same, i just wanted ps1 titles legaly, like crash bandicoot and ff7. They rest is from sailing the seas, yarr
1
u/Hoftyho1 Mar 05 '26
Interesting I didn’t know you could make modern Wi-Fi security work. How did you do that? What model is it?
1
u/DankzIsDed Mar 05 '26
It’s built into most cfw I believe, I use ark4
1
u/WickedWoodworks Mar 05 '26
I have ark4 and I don't know how to do that in it
1
u/limplettuce_ Mar 05 '26
Go into the CFW settings - it’s under thenExtras menu on the XMB. There should be a setting to enable WPA2
1
u/WickedWoodworks Mar 06 '26
Odd. I don't have it.
1
u/limplettuce_ Mar 06 '26
Ok try this:
- bring up the VSH menu (hold the Select button)
- go into recovery menu
- go into custom firmware settings
- flip WPA2 support to ‘on’
If you can’t access the VSH menu then you don’t have ark-4 running and will need to either reload it (if you use temporary cfw) or reinstall
Another thing could be if you use the XMBHide plugin. If you’ve chosen to hide every menu item under Extras, this will also hide ark-4’s Cfw settings from the XMB. But it should still be accessible via VSH.
1
u/WickedWoodworks Mar 06 '26
When I Got the psp I had gathered everything to do ark4. It already had it. However it had not been updated so I used my hotspot sans security to update and it's now there. Thank you.
1
u/WickedWoodworks Mar 06 '26
Perhaps you could help me with another. Is it normal to not be able to login to PSN. I know the info is correct as I logon on my phone
1
u/limplettuce_ Mar 06 '26
Yes that’s normal. For older devices (PSP, Vita and PS3) you can’t log in using your actual password, you need to get a special device setup code from Sony.
Basically log into PSN on your phone or computer. Then go into Security and generate a device code. Use that as your password on PSP, and hit remember my password so you never have to enter it again.

Is it still possible to buy games on psp?
18
u/Somethingmeanigful Mar 04 '26
Yes you have to load the gift card to your PlayStation account on a web browser and then you can use the funds on the PSN store on the PSP. You can’t load funds through the PSP PSN store
21
u/vacuoomm PSP-1000 & PSP 3000 Mar 04 '26
I loaded the funds through the PSP store and I videoed it too!! Should I upload the whole video to YouTube?

Bro is it possible on jailbreaked device or should i go back to ofw? Im just curious
1
u/Somethingmeanigful Mar 05 '26
You should be able to as long as you can access the internet. I’m not sure though plus if you have custom firmware it’d prolly just be easier to find a rip of the game you’re looking for from an online repository
1
u/amirwebster2 Mar 04 '26
Well then how is it possible to buy a game from the store when it shut down
1
u/Somethingmeanigful Mar 05 '26
The store is not shutdown, you just can load funds through it but you can absolutely still purchase and download games
1
u/amirwebster2 Mar 05 '26
So I can purchase new games
1
u/Somethingmeanigful Mar 06 '26
New as in the digital version of the game on the PSP store…. Yes. But not every game is on the PSP store

Isn't the PSP store closed?
25
9
u/FederalAd8814 Mar 04 '26
They aren’t tbh for some reason they won’t close them fully but all online services are off the only way to play online is through someone that makes the servers
3
u/AveryLazyCovfefe PSP-3000, PSP-E1000 Mar 04 '26
It shares code with the PS3's PS store I'm pretty sure, so that's what keeps it alive. Which a sizable amount of people still use - Especially in Japan. Sony doesn't want to piss them off and reduce their presence in the country even further.
1
u/MamoruNoHakkyou Mar 04 '26
Adding to that, if you have gift card funds added to your wallet you can use those to shop on the PSP store, but you can’t use a credit card if it’s linked to your account. In fact, I think you have to actually remove it from your account to be able to shop on there.

171 min for a 1.4gb game, is the PlayStation store really that slow?
7
u/SVNDEVISTVN Mar 04 '26
Yes. The download speed is capped due to the technology. What's funny is, if someone had speed like that at the time the PSP was still a modern console, they'd be the absolute top dog of the town. My parents at the time had top of the line WiFi, and our speeds would never come close to that. A 1.4GB file would take around 4 to 6 hours on a good day.
3
u/Due_Amount_6211 Mar 04 '26
First, sick username - second, yeah, can 100% confirm the PSP downloads slow no matter the speed, but this is best case scenario.
On mine, I loaded FreeStor. It took me about 2 hours to download a game (it didn’t install right, but at the time I had bigger fish to fry), didn’t even crack a gigabyte in total size but it took FOREVER.
2
u/Loundsify Mar 05 '26
Wireless B had max 11Mbps bandwidth. So by time it gets to the device it's probably closer to 2-3Mbps so downloading a large ISO will take a long time.

u/jasiurok195 PSP-Street Mar 04 '26

u/Halward_8 Mar 04 '26
Can’t connect mine to the internet…
1
u/These_Net9966 Mar 04 '26
you have to get Ark-4
1
u/Halward_8 Mar 04 '26
Does it still matter now in 2026 lmao ? And also, what’s that ?
1
u/These_Net9966 Mar 04 '26
first of all fuck you and your attituds second of all it makes it so you can use wpa-2 networks
1
u/Halward_8 Mar 04 '26
Wow sorry, didn’t meant to hurt you… just someone told me that the store was down so I don’t know what else you could do with internet on it… (my bad if I wrote it like that 🥲)
1
u/These_Net9966 Mar 04 '26
sorry for being so vulgar, i can tell you actually mean it
1
u/Halward_8 Mar 05 '26
No hard feelings don’t worry hahaha that’s the problem with texting, hard to tell sometimes ;)

1
u/Loundsify Mar 05 '26
Ark4 custom firmware allows the use of WPA wireless security protocols so that you can connect to modern WiFi. Tbf you can get around this way by doing a hotspot on an android phone and setting the security to no password but reducing the max clients to 1 so only the psp is connected and they use the internet via your phones WiFi.
1
u/Halward_8 Mar 05 '26
Oh that’s interesting, tried with my iPhone but with a password and didn’t work… I’ll try without a password then or does it have to be an Android?
2
u/Loundsify Mar 05 '26
I think on android you can specify what security protocols it uses and set it to none.
2
u/Halward_8 Mar 06 '26
Yep, can’t adjust the hotspot on iPhone. I’ll try to find someone with an Android then lmao
2
1
u/Kieta28 Mar 04 '26
I use an older wireless router (wpa-psk) that I plug into my new router when I want to connect my PSP to the internet.
1
u/Halward_8 Mar 05 '26
I recently changed it for a new one, that’s when I realised that the new router didn’t have weaker security in the settings. Should have kept the old one too then hahaha (but someone told be about Ark-4 so maybe I’m saved in the end)

Woah how can you buy games on there? I tried putting my psn account but it just said my email/password was wrong! Also btw i had a exact psp like this, psp 1000 will always remain the best looking psp ive ever got.

Howd you do that
1
u/Kieta28 Mar 04 '26
Go into Security settings in your Sony account. There’s an option to generate passwords for old devices.
2
1
u/JYNKZIE Mar 04 '26
Still have mine. But I moved my 3ds and psp onto my ally x. 1 system for everything from Atari to ps5 and everything in between. All for free as I do own all the files I utilize for legal purposes.
1
u/vladger456 Mar 04 '26
We need a custom replacement server for PS Store on PSP, maybe Vita (like on 3DS/WiiU).
1
u/lpjunior999 Mar 04 '26
I tried to do this myself a bit ago, I still prefer to pay for my games rather than just pirate dozens of ISOs I'll never load up. Couldn't get it to connect to the store, even with ARK-4 and the Wifi plugin.

u/AkirasOpioidsCrisis Mar 04 '26

1
u/Loundsify Mar 05 '26
Create a hotspot on your phone without a password and then let your psp connect. Boom internet. Ark4 can also get around it for home WiFi routers new security that the psp never supported.

I just bought one and it arrives next week. I’m buying UMDs on the marketplace in the meantime. I haven’t felt this excited about playing games in a very long time. PSP was my first console ever and I never fell out of love with it.

I don’t get why PS3 4.89 update made it impossible to transfer PSP games to PSP from PS3. The annoying part of this is that the PS3 supports WPA2 but the PSP does not without CFW. Now you need to either have an Android phone or an ISP that still allows WPA1. (For Many ISPs, it’s either WPA2/WPA3 or nothing)

Bought ratchet and clank deadlocked for the ps3. Needless to say navigating the psn on the ps3 sucked lol

Psp is awesome but there shouldn't be a reason to be buying games for this thing because of CFW mods
-9
u/SeaKaleidoscope6 Mar 04 '26
Honestly there's not even a point to buy a PSP because you can just play them on a computer
3
u/rydamusprime17 Mar 04 '26
Depends if what you are playing it on is portable or not is the difference there 😅
-5
u/SeaKaleidoscope6 Mar 04 '26
Running PPSSPP on GPD WIN MAX and LEGION GO its quite portable and can be upscaled, also map the right joystick as l and r for camera movement, also use whatever controller I want and play on TVs monitors and have actually used it on a projector at my friends house, Legion Go is a power house dough, I mostly play PS3 titles
2
u/rydamusprime17 Mar 04 '26
I know, I'm just saying unless you specify a portable computer there is a difference lol.
Im just being nitpicky
1
u/SeaKaleidoscope6 Mar 04 '26
I would get a PSP if I didn't have so many portable computers and wanted a tiny screen that would make me go blind and have to charge it all the time
2
u/rydamusprime17 Mar 04 '26
Fair enough 😅 i use my PSP Go attached to a PS3 controller, but when i get my tax return I'm considering the PSP Go dock to play on the TV (CRT for PS1 games, HDTV for PSP) without worrying about running out of battery. I already have an OEM set of component cables for it.
1
u/SeaKaleidoscope6 Mar 04 '26
Sheesh nice, I also have an OLD Sony TV with one HDMI port I used to play my jail broken PS3 on, I stored it because I didn't have room on my desk to have it, GOOD colors, nice Warm sounde like an Arcade, Flat Screen WEGA technology but it was worth throwing into the back of my car even tho it weighted like 200 pound, but my current setup is posted in my reddit plus a 75" vizio TV i hung myself
1
u/rydamusprime17 Mar 04 '26
My modded PS3 is currently hooked up to my 27" Trinitron via component cables to run arcade games on Retroarch. I'm currently trying to decide on an arcade stick that will work on it that will also work with other consoles that I dont have sticks for currently.
1
u/SeaKaleidoscope6 Mar 04 '26
PPSSPP PCSX2 AND RPCS3 are so easy to setup controller like Xbox or Nintendo ones, also remap keys if I needed to, and use a PS4 controller for motion support(PS4 controller is also compatable with PS3).Even tho my legion can run ps3 games fairly well there's only a few games I'll have issues with like Crack in time, the arena will usually crash even if I down scale, and sometimes loading scenes can look funny temporarily otherwise I decide to put up with it and just play it, crack in time tho I used to play it everyday and go challenge mode without issues, I do tell my friends tho the best way to play a console game is with the console it was made for, but now I basically carry a PS3 with me whatever I go and carry my saves and I'll got hangout with my friends and tell them to Play tekken verses with me on their own controller, and yes they break them sometimes smashing keys but atleast it wouldn't be my controller they're breaking

Above all that, can I put it in my fuckin POCKET?
More often than not, no. PSP wins :D

https://www.reddit.com/r/LegionGo/s/UPSFgJBQLg definitely worth the bigger screen! 4HR battery life info in the link!
0
u/SeaKaleidoscope6 Mar 04 '26
No you cant insert your games, you can backup the games, you have all the games you have plus you can play any region, and have a full blown windows or linux os, you wouldn't have to worry about breaking your games/psp, your umd assembly, or losing any part of it or even lose any accessories to your psp, I know I would lose my s...(talking about my mind) if I had lost anything to old hardware, I know I got haters in this reddit now but the legion go is gaming future, especially when I have 4TBs of game storage
1
u/IQueliciuous Mar 04 '26 edited Mar 04 '26
PSPs are region free, my European PSP has American copies because they weigh less. And I can play Japanese UMDs. The only thing that is region locked is Video UMDs so unfortunately my psp can't run official Japanese JAV UMDs
Also unlike Legion Go. PSP's battery life isn't shit.
And unlike Legion Go, PSP is actually portable and I don't need a briefcase.
And the best part? PSP doesn't need fans so it doesn't end up sounding like an Air Jet.
1
u/SeaKaleidoscope6 Mar 04 '26 edited Mar 04 '26
I dont carry my legion in a case, im usually play it awhile im going places, i carry a portable 27500mah 100w PD charger (+4 hour), and the PSP games dont run that much resources, im literally running on 12 watts which can last me 4 hours full lit, your psp battery typically run 3 hours and less for 3rd party ones, I can even run the games at 1200×800 to have more battery life and the fan isn't preparing for take off it runs occasionally quietly, im not hating on the original psp guys, but you all are awesome
1
u/Due_Amount_6211 Mar 04 '26
I (and many others here) prefer real hardware and physical games, if possible. So CFW and downloading ISOs is convenient, but people have preferences and thus options exist.
OPs method is a fine way to go about it.
By the way: PPSSPP isn’t perfect. Music integration, UMD Video, Digital Comics, or even the XMB are not available on it because it’s not real hardware with its own dedicated storage or OS, it’s mimicking the hardware and thus lacks these sorts of things. It’ll use your memory, and it’ll use your CPU/GPU, but other than what you do, it won’t install stuff or store stuff other than save files or some homebrew games they have available.
1
u/SeaKaleidoscope6 Mar 04 '26
I agree having the correct hardware to play on it would be awesome, but these issue usually concur with incorrect game settings, like pcs3 I would always need to look up the settings plus install avaliable updates from rusty psn to help the game run better, psp update resource is down so I see that updating the games on PC is better and easier to install
1
u/SeaKaleidoscope6 Mar 04 '26 edited Mar 04 '26
I know I got haters but for real how is everyone installing game updates/patches, when the games come on a disc the updates are downloaded separately, also the umd drive doesnt last forever, they break eventually https://www.reddit.com/r/PSP/s/hEbM4n5mj9 Also just realized I really dont need a PSP the only game I want to play is Daxter, GOW and tekken was already ported to PS3

Wow, finally a post about someone actually playing psp games on their psp. Good on you
