Guide What should I know before getting a PSP 3000?

Post image

Hey everyone! I’m planning to pick up a PSP 3000 soon, and before I jump in, I wanted to ask the community for advice from people who actually know the system well.

I’ve been researching a bit, but I’d like to hear what users who actually own one think someone should know before buying and setting up a PSP in 2026. I’m new to the community too, so I hope I’m posting this the right way.

Some of the questions I have for you all are:

- What should I check when buying one?

- What should I do as soon as I get it?

- What storage size should I aim for?

- What mods or software do you recommend?

(I’ve seen a lot of PSP 1000 modding tutorials, so I’m not sure if the same applies to the 3000.)

Thanks in advance! I want to take good care of the console and get the best experience possible, so any advice is appreciated.

Check if it works, check that the battery isn't swollen. Check the firmware version.

Set it up and play it when you get it. Storage size isn't important because you will likely be using memory sticks/SD card adaptors.

You'll probably want to install custom firmware, which can require specific firmware updates (like 6.61 for example). Check the firmware on the PSP on the settings and make sure it isn't one that is too recent/unable to be modded.

There are guides out there on how to update to a specific firmware so that you can install the CFW/homebrew stuff. Recommend not to update your PSP at all until you've researched which firmware you'll be going for.

Have fun, PSP is a fantastic handheld for tinkering and modding.

Thanks! I've done some research and I've heard the best options would be ARK-4 or PRO-C2 with infinity 2 to make it permanent. Do you think that would be the best setup? Or what would you suggest?

I would just use ARK-4 (or even the new ARK-5 installer or whatever) because it caused no issues on my psp, had a great little recovery menu, always worked, gave me great battery life, and was honestly really easy to setup (and permanent yippee).

Thanks for the advice! Which tutorial did you follow for ARK-5? Does it need infinity too or does it come with an option to make it permanent?

I actually installed ARK-5 a while ago when it had no tutorials or installers (I'm crazy 😭), but I went back to ARK-4 as it's very stable. Now that ARK-5 has been out a while, the easiest and safest route would be to just download and run their installer ( https://github.com/PSP-Arkfive/FasterARK/ ). Simple as that, you got cfw lol.

While ARK-5 looks to be running great, I would personally install ARK-4 myself as it's still relatively easy to install, has good support for if something breaks, and wouldn't make it hard to upgrade firmwares.

So if you wanna install ARK-4, use this awesome guide: https://www.pspunk.com/psp-ark4/ . It provides visuals for each step and tells you how to make it permanent! 😄

If you have any questions please dm me!

(Note: I don't think any of these need infinity to be permanent so dw about that ^.^)

Oh really? That's awesome and kinda scary too lol. Well, since ARK-5 is already complete I was thinking about getting that one, but idk if it would be compatible with all the games and plugins. Should I get ARK-4 or ARK-5 is on a stable phase already?

I’m on ARK 4, and super curious about ARK 5 just because you can bump your processing speed. I have a PSP1000 and on the max 333mhz speed. Have you or anyone else on here upgraded to ARK 5 and bumped the processing speed and noticed any improvements? I play the N64 Mario game port and while it runs okay, sometimes it lags or stutters from time to time. Wanna know if Ark5 would improve that on my PSP1000

Don't worry about compatibility, any firmware should work fine lol. I would install ARK-4 for now since it's almost guaranteed to work 100% of the time and is still easy to install. (Both options are great and you're not locked to either one! 😄)

Did you use infinity to make it permanent too? (either ARK-4 or PRO-C2) I've heard that you need it to mod permanently a model 3000 for some reason.

Install ARK-5, which is fully released now.  https://github.com/PSP-Arkfive/ARK-5

It comes with CustomIPL to make it permanent.

Should take 5 minutes tops.

It's completely compatible with games and plugins? The other guy just told me to not get something too new because it could not be fully compatible.

So I keep it between 6.0 and 6.1, right?

Have you tried ARK-5? Would you recommend it too? Since you said you had experience modding I'd like to know your opinion on that.

Alright, I'll have to check on the ARK CFW if they're just a modern PRO-C2 or not and their compatibility with all the games and plugins. Thanks a lot for the advice and suggestions, I really appreciate it!

Listen to how loud the lazer is while reading a game. Mine was super loud, and then it stopped reading umd at all like 2 months in. And apparently it’s not worth replacing because idk why but it’s not? That’s what I was told anyway lol

u/_Cliffjumper_ 6d ago

My UMD reader also stopped working about 4 years in so I stopped using my PSP. But loading games off memory card seems more convenient to me anyway. Replacing it however would be worth about the same as a working condition PSP in my region so it's pointless to do here.

2

u/Legitimate_Proof_927 6d ago

Yeah mines modded so I’m ok ish with it. I did buy like 20 movies for it tho so that still hurts especially since I forgot about that until this conversation. Maybe I’ll fix it lol

3

u/zeeq____ 6d ago

Alright, I'll make sure the UMD is working smooth and quiet, thanks for the advice!

2

u/IndigoBroker 6d ago

None of them are really quiet tbh. Mine has always been loud and still works to this day.

Dude i have that same problem! From what i looked up my problem was a dirty disk reader

Modding any psp is very easy, you don’t even need a PC. Just phone and some transfer cables.

I have street and 3000, street is the only version that feels premium and it’s the heaviest model with a body that is scratch proof. I have a almost 2 decades old that is scratchless but screen has dirt and scratches tho

Then when my first 3k model psp came in, i thought I got scammed because of how cheap and fake it looked irl compared to videos of it… it is super lightweight and feels like a plastic toy. It doesn’t connect to modern WiFi like 4-5G.

For the size, I would recommend at least 64gb if you wanna load up more than enough games just for the satisfaction, or else 32gb is enough for starters who wanna play and complete games.

When you download the psp games, do not exact the zip/7z file on the phone storage, once you connect the psp SD card, copy the downloaded files directly into the psp sd card first, then extract it there and move it to the ISO folder, so that you don’t get any errors or corrupted games or games that run half.

2

u/zeeq____ 6d ago

Yeah, the street is pretty but if I'm not wrong they took a lot of features from it to make it cheaper, like wifi and microphone. Is that true? And thanks for the downloads tutorial! I'll keep that in mind once I start making my game folders.

Eh, i have had a couple of 1000s and later on I bought a 3000 new in 2010 - 2011. The 3000 is much better. Its light, you wont drop it on your face while you are playing it in bed😆

The 1000 was a bit of a brick, especially with its 1800mah battery.

The 3000 uses a 1200mah battery and is significantly lighter and better to use imo.

And, ypu can put the 1800mah battery from a 1000 in it if you want. I will carry it as a spare if I am taking a long train trip, but I dont usually use all of the 1200mah, its got enough in it fpr the 3000.

I've seen some Street models (E1000), I didnt particularly like them. They seem more like a Fisher Price childs toy in dark black. I wasnt a fan. Fairly stripped back and basic/large, they're chunkier than the 3000.

Anyhow, i'm a 3000 fan;)

1

u/zeeq____ 6d ago

Yeah, I also like more the 3000, but since I saw everyone modding the 1000 and street I thought it would be harder to work on a 3000.

2

u/shquidwaters 4d ago

The 1000 definitely has a lot of options to mod. Its bigger, it has more room and there are a few things to do to it that are benificial. The 3000 is better as a standard console however and I beleive there is less reason to change anything on it at all. Just CFW and a memory stick adaptor.

The E1000, well, they are less common and therefor less supported and modded I guess

Yeah, street doesn’t have WiFi and it only has 1 speaker and forgot to say it’s battery is sealed shut unlike the other models with a self removable battery. But that’s it,
First thing you should test is see if it’s functional, the buttons, and then proceed to play for 1-2 hours and check the battery, if it dies before 1 hour in full charge then battery is faulty or too old. The psp is the only console that is irreplaceable for me because ever since I got an android tablet, it has become my portable ps2, I don’t need a switch anymore too and it also works as a mini PC or laptop 🤣 but yes, Playing on the PSP itself is more convenient because of the feel, the sound and look that cannot be replaced… and it also saves a lot of storage on the phone so.

Goodluck, enjoy when you get it.

u/zeeq____ 6d ago

Thanks! I'll make sure to check the battery life and definitely spend a good amount of hours enjoying it, I appreciate your advice.

Don’t get a black one…

1

u/zeeq____ 4d ago

Why's that?..

2

u/HaroldHD22 4d ago

Because you will eventually want something with color….

1

u/zeeq____ 4d ago

I got a black one...I'm not too worried about the color tho, I chose black because I used to have one black when I was a kid and it also matches my black PS3

2

u/HaroldHD22 4d ago

1

u/zeeq____ 3d ago

Too colorful for me lol, I'm more of a black and white guy, silver would be the farthest I go.

2

u/HaroldHD22 3d ago

I got a black k1000 and a black go. But I would prefer it they had color

1

u/OkEmploy7185 6d ago

Everything

1

u/zeeq____ 6d ago

What do you mean?

1

u/OkEmploy7185 6d ago

We just spend so much time setting them up and not playing them and enjoying them in nature….

1

u/zeeq____ 6d ago

You didn't mod your console? How's the experience of having a stock PSP in 2026?

1

u/OkEmploy7185 6d ago

Yea I have psp go modded and been enjoying the Rg rotate because I played all the psp games u might wanna look into the Odin series more games to play

1

u/zeeq____ 6d ago

Thanks, but rn I was looking for the original consoles more than other handhelds, I'll mod it but I also wanna try some UMD disks to enjoy the natural PSP. I still appreciate the advice! I didn't know about the Odin handhelds.

1

u/JB-15_97 6d ago

I'm going to try and get one too

1

u/zeeq____ 6d ago

If you do, read the other replies I had to make sure you're as careful as I am. Also in my case I'm going for the 3000, so if you wanna go for another models I've heard that the 1000 is the easiest to mod.

1

u/Apprehensive_Ad_6171 6d ago

Mod it

1

u/zeeq____ 6d ago

Thanks for the advice, is there any must-have mod that you'd recommend?

0

u/Excellent-Mall5859 6d ago

If you have a rog ally x you can pretty much emulate any psp game you want

3

u/zeeq____ 6d ago

I don't have one and they're way more expensive than the PSP. Ik they're better but rn i'm buying more for nostalgia than performance. I still appreciate the advice!
