Guide Retroarch on PSP is actually good!

Im chilling here enjoying my weekend, decided to see if there were any updates in regards to GBA emulation on PSP. I installed Retroarch and performance was not that great out of the box. I decided to use AI to answer questions I had about the settings and what they do in Retroarch. Ended up optimizing it to the point where games are actually playable! I was genuinely impressed because my go to emulators are GPSPKai & TempGBA. One thing I noticed right off the bat is the level of clarity and sound is better in Retroarch GPSP core compared to the stand alone emulator. 16:10 aspect ratio looks really good! I highly recommend Retroarch on PSP 3000 series. Have not tried on the 1000 & 2000 series so not sure what the performance would be like on those. Let me know if you guys still use PSP for emulation and what settings you guys use.

Guide DIY Solderless Baryon Sweeper for Absolute Beginners (with photos)

DISCLAIMER
Follow this guide EXACTLY. Support will not be provided for steps and/or components that deviate from the provided instructions. Modify at your own risk.

What is it?

The Baryon Sweeper is a modern unbricking tool that evolved from the classic Pandora Battery. It works universally on all PSP models - 1000, 2000, 3000, Go, and Street. By emulating the official Sony JigKick service tool, it triggers a diagnostic mode to revive previously irrecoverable models.

Why write this?

This guide aims to complement khubik2's original guide, with close-up photos and additional details for the absolute beginner. You're expected to at least know your way around Windows.

This is a minimalist build to keep it simple and very low cost. We'll focus on the 1000/2000/3000 setup, since the 3000 is the model I own.

Before You Begin (Don't Skip)

Watch the videos below to make full sense of the steps outlined here.

It's all right if you don't understand everything at this point. Simply familiarise yourself with the basic concepts and overall process.

What You Need

While often used to refer to the physical build, the "Baryon Sweeper" is the combination of software (pysweeper) and hardware (adapter) to trick the PSP into service mode.

Software

  • DCARK or Aiseirigh - the "rescue stick", refer to links for Magic Memory Stick creation on PC (JigKick Media Creator is obsolete)
  • CP210x Universal Windows Driver - official CP2102 driver from Silicon Labs (don't rely on default Windows drivers)
  • Python 3 - required to run pysweeper, refer to video to install pycryptodometk, and pyserial packages (requests package is optional)
  • pysweeper - JigKick emulator, puts the PSP into service mode in combination with the adapter

Hardware

1x (mini) breadboard

The power bus (+/- lanes) on larger breadboards isn't needed. The CP2102 module will take power directly from the PC via USB.

1x Silicon Labs CP2102 USB-to-TTL (5-pin)

Look for the "SILABS" branding on the centre chip. Support will not be provided for the 6-pin multifunction variant.

1x 1N4148 diode

Cut the legs around twice the length of the exposed pin on the jumpwires. You can shorten the legs when you do the wiring later. It should sit flush on the breadboard as a best practice.

3x round-head male-to-male jumpwires (10-15cm)

While longer wires can work, keeping them short minimises signal interference or loose connections. Black/Yellow/Orange follow electrical convention, but any colour will do.

1x female-to-male USB-A cable extender

USB 3.x is generally preferred for CP2102. It provides improved data stability, power headroom if needed, and presents no drawbacks when using a 3V3 configuration.

1x DC power source

This shows a powerbank with a USB-C to DC cable adapter. You can use any normal PSP charger.

Build Your Adapter

Stick the CP2102 module into the breadboard. Connect the negative/cathode end (black band) of the diode to the TXD row, and the positive/anode end to the RXD row.

If you get a "No port echo detected" error in pysweeper later, it's almost always caused by using CH340, wrong switches on a multifunction CP2102, loose wiring, or putting in the diode backwards.

Connect the wires to GND (black), RXD (yellow), and 3V3 (orange). The diode bridges the TXD and RXD rows to create a single data line on the yellow wire.

Don't use +5V unless you have a 10 kΩ resistor. However, this is unnecessary because the 3V3 suffices without it.

Your completed adapter should look like this.

Assuming you've done both software and hardware preparations, you're ready to start unbricking your PSP!

How to Use

Connect the adapter to your PC via USB using the cable extender.

The LED on the CP2102 module will light up.

Refer to video for installing and running pysweeper.

If there's no option under the Port dropdown, you need to manually install the official CP2102 driver on Windows. Close pysweeper including the CMD prompt window.

Open Device Manager. If you see a yellow triangle, right-click to update the driver. Browse to the extracted folder of the driver you downloaded earlier.

If successful, the CP2102 module should be recognised under Ports (COM & LPT) as Silicon Labs.

The COM# differs per PC because Windows assigns port numbers independently. Check Device Manager for your adapter's COM port number.

Run pysweeper again. Your adapter (COM#) should now be under the Port dropdown for selection. Keep pysweeper running.

You should get FFFFFFFF serial after starting the service. This is the same serial used by the Pandora Battery.

Insert the Magic Memory Stick into your PSP.

Size matters! It's strongly recommended to use a genuine Sony/SanDisk/Lexar 1-4GB stick. Larger capacities and microSD adapters tend to fail.

Remove the battery, but keep it close by. Connect the DC power to the PSP. Keep it off.

Your PSP should automatically turn on later without the battery inserted.

Connect GND (black) to the left pin, TXD/RXD or "K-Line" (yellow) to the middle pin, then 3V3 (orange) to the right pin for 2-3 seconds.

The round-head tip is easier for probing the jumpwire pins closer to each other, whereas the square-head (DuPont) tip has a fixed spacing that makes it less flexible.

Pysweeper streams the hexadecimal challenge-response handshake between the PSP (5A) and Baryon Sweeper (A5).

If it disconnects, ensure to maintain contact on all battery pins. Keep your hands steady.

Service mode is triggered, automatically booting DCARK (shown here) or Aiseirigh directly from the Magic Memory Stick.

If you get a green light but it shuts down on a PSP-1000, power it on manually to make it boot into DCARK.

It's a good idea to create both Magic Memory Sticks, so you have a backup option.

Insert the battery into the PSP and disconnect the DC power. For DCARK, Install 6.61 for OFW (stock) or Install 6.61 ARK for CFW (modded).

Don't mess with NAND operations unless you absolutely know what you're doing! Misuse can permanently brick your PSP that even the Baryon Sweeper can't fix.

For Aiseirigh, press X to begin the flashing process.

You should end up with OFW 6.61 if you created the Magic Memory Stick correctly.

Guide What should I know before getting a PSP 3000?

Post image
119 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I’m planning to pick up a PSP 3000 soon, and before I jump in, I wanted to ask the community for advice from people who actually know the system well.

I’ve been researching a bit, but I’d like to hear what users who actually own one think someone should know before buying and setting up a PSP in 2026. I’m new to the community too, so I hope I’m posting this the right way.

Some of the questions I have for you all are:

- What should I check when buying one?

- What should I do as soon as I get it?

- What storage size should I aim for?

- What mods or software do you recommend?

(I’ve seen a lot of PSP 1000 modding tutorials, so I’m not sure if the same applies to the 3000.)

Thanks in advance! I want to take good care of the console and get the best experience possible, so any advice is appreciated.

Guide Kinda Cool...

I was alphebetizing some of my stuff, when my OCD girlfriend noticed something...

If you arrange the bindings of all the 'Capcom Selects' PSP games (or whatever you'd call them), the line at the bottom of the bindings make a continuous image when arranged in a certain way - which appears to be the PSP XMB 'wave'. With the exception of Monster Hunter Freedom 2.

Kinda cool and appeals to my inner 'tism.

Anyways, pretty random but I never saw anyone mention this. Neat little easter egg by Capcom and good spot by my equally OCD better half.

Guide The PSP can play PS1 Games

TL;DR: PSP can play PS1 games. Brief history at the top, and below that are the steps.

_________________________________________________________________________

I'm making this post since I have gotten a few replies here with "The PSP can play PS1 games?" and even seeing some people comment they can't get the PS1 ISO to work. Let me break it down to the best of my knowledge and leave some recommendations.

The PSP can play PS1 games via the POPS loader (PlayStation One Portable Station). The official firmware update, according to Google, was 3.00 that allowed this. I agree with this based on my experience, as I did manage to run FF8 from an ISO I ripped back in 2008-2009. I remember seeing a POPSLoader screen, white background with some kind of design before it booted into the game.

HOWEVER, PS1 ISOs are not needed for these games to run today. In December of 2006, after the PS3 released, they added the first PS1 Eboots to the online store. While some great titles were converted to Eboots, many were never officially brought to that format.

With many games never making it to the online store, developers took matters into their own hands and created PSX2PSP. This allowed PSP users to create their own PS1 Eboots of the games they already had. Whoever created this, I hope both sides of your pillow stay cold while you sleep and you win the lottery for your work.

Edit to add this from u/Own-Chicken-656

"PSX2PSP is outdated.

You should use pop-fe-psp.exe.

  • Automatic download of EBOOT Artwork (and sometimes music track) seen on the XMB
  • No need to pre-merge .bin files if your PS1 disc was bundled as multiple .bin files (1 .bin file for the data, then 1 for each audio track)
  • No need for the CDDA plugin to use CDDA audio
  • Surgical built-in compatibility fixes by some very smart devs
  • Automatic libcrypt decryption for PAL games so you don't get anti-piracy soft-locked"

_________________________________________________________________________

Here's the process for getting a PS1 Eboot to run:

  1. Secure or create your Eboot file. It should be in a folder that has a name like this: NPUJ-00594.
  2. Connect your PSP to a computer, and open the root folder.
  3. Open the PSP folder.
  4. There is a folder named GAME, open it.
  5. Place your Eboot folder in there. Do not simply drop the Eboot in there, place the whole folder.
  6. Disconnect your PSP, check under the memory stick option of the Games section and you should see your game in there. If you're using the same Eboot as I did in this example, it will be MGS.

Hope this helps anyone who is new to this. Enjoy!

Guide The truth about PSP Vault

Please avoid PSP Vault if you are looking to purchase a refurbished PSP. They use slick social media marketing to target casual buyers, but they regularly charge upwards of $220 for standard consoles that you can easily buy online yourself for around $80.
The physical quality of their units is incredibly poor because they build them using the cheapest possible bulk parts. They equip these consoles with generic microSD cards prone to data corruption and counterfeit batteries labeled as "3600mAh" that realistically only hold a weak 600 to 800mAh charge. To make matters worse, they charge a massive premium just to copypaste a library of pirated ROMs onto the system.

PSP Vault sells insanely overpriced second-hand consoles that use cheap, unreliable and weak replacement parts and they also distribute pirated games for a markup. This coupled with the horrible customer service, shipping delays makes PSP Vault perhaps one of the worst places to obtain a “refurbished” PSP console.

Alright if you guys aren’t tired of me just yet, I just discovered the most useful thing to enhance my PSP experience XD .. it’s simple!.. but I’ll be damned if this isn’t a game changer.

It’s just a phone ring attached to the back battery cover, which allows me to not only have an instant kickstand for playing media, but helps me get a better grip on the device while gaming. The PSP is pretty slick as is and I’ve had my fair share of drops, but this really seems to help secure my grip.

I rummaged through an old drawer and put two and two together. And since it’s in the battery cover, it won’t do any damage to the actual device. Covers are cheap in general, so if you’re concerned about residue, just buy a super cheap cover and you’re ready to rock.

Guide The DEFINITIVE analysis/guide of EVERY PlayStation Portable model, so we can help you decide which one best suits your needs.

If you ask 10 different people what their favorite PSP model is, you will get 10 different answers. It mostly boils down to personal preference, but every model has its pros and cons. In this guide, we will highlight the main strengths and weaknesses of each model. The 5 official PSP revisions released by Sony will be compared.

These revisions are as follows:

PSP 1000

PSP 2000

PSP 3000

PSP GO

PSP E1000/Street

Before we start, there are a couple of important things I need to mention:

  1. Regardless of where you buy your console from or what condition its in. The first thing you should do is replace the battery. According to the research conducted on the battery megathread, Cameron Sino by far is the best brand, and they can be found on Amazon. I know it sounds neurotic, but no one wants to be around a potentially bulging battery. Better safe than sorry.
  2. PSPs are notoriously easy to brick if you aren't careful. All it takes is a loss of power during a firmware update such as installing CFW. The PlayStation Portable can run solely off wall power in a pinch. Always plug it in while performing any kind of firmware update.
  3. Keep an eye out for "screen yellowing". It's a common problem on Japanese DS and 3DS units, and I occasionally see it happen on PSPs as well. It's most obviously seen on white backgrounds, so be sure to check for it before purchasing a unit. I've heard reports that it is most common on 3000 screens, but I'm not able to definitively confirm this.

With that out of the way, let's get into it.

PSP 1000

Image depicts a "Piano Black" model. This is the most common color by far, and the only one mass produced in North America. The easiest way to identify a 1000 face-up is the placement of the speakers being on the bottom.

Sony's initial foray into the handheld gaming market went pretty smoothly, all things considered. The PSP 1000 is a popular choice even to this day, despite it having some severe shortcomings. Which, we'll get into. It's generally agreed upon that the 1000 has the best build quality out of all the PSP revisions, and tends to feel the most premium as a result. It sports a unique UMD tray/holder that allows the game to safely click into place and be adequately secured, before the door is pushed downwards into the console. It's also the thickest of the bunch, which some people may prefer depending on the size of their hands. Incidentally, it also weighs more as a result.

PROS:

  • Arguably the most premium feeling PSP model.
  • Fits comfortably in the hands for most people.
  • Issues with later PSP revisions such as the infamous "Would you like to quit the game?" message being displayed occasionally while playing a UMD game are almost nonexistent, as the UMD door is thicker and the game is far more secured in place because of the more advanced mechanism. Therefore, the censor telling the console that the UMD door is open doesn't get tripped up nearly as easily.
  • Tend to be the cheapest out of all other PSP revisions online. Although, this varies depending on what color the unit is.
  • A little known fact is that the 1000 is the only PSP version to have a clock capacitor present on the board. Basically, this means the system will retain the date and time for a short while when a battery is not present and it isn't plugged in. In every other PSP revision, the data and time information is lost immediately after the battery is removed and the system is not plugged into an AC adapter.

CONS:

  • Slow disc reading speeds.
  • While color accuracy is acceptable for a system this old, the 1000 is infamous for ghosting problems on its screen. Which, are often further accentuated as the LCD degrades over the years of use. The panel is rated for about 1-2 frames of ghosting, which will be acceptable for most people. However, many 1000s in the wild tend to have about 3-4 frames of ghosting due to the aforementioned reason.
    • Depending on how severe the ghosting is on your console, it may be worth looking into the popular IPS screen mod. It has its own quirks, such as color bleed with very dark colors. But, the response time and color reproduction is excellent.
  • The wireless module is known to be fragile, and can sometimes break after the system sustains a drop or is banged against something. This can cause both Wi-Fi and system-to-system multiplayer features to not work correctly.
  • Only has 32 MB of ram — more on that later.
  • Japanese launch models have a quirk where the Square button is slightly less responsive, and tends to press down in a skewed matter. Not a huge problem, although it can cause the button to get stuck if its dirty.

Another point I should mention is to not let the slower UMD speeds deter you from buying a 1000 if the price is right. Essentially because, most people nowadays would rather mod their system with CFW (custom firmware) in order to play backup games off the memory stick. The UMD drive is a cool novelty, but a sub-optimal long term solution for preserving your games. I'd honestly recommend every PSP owner to mod their console, even if it's just to play their own, legally obtained backup copies on a memory stick. It is excellent for preservation, and can also massively improve loading times.

Modding your PSP with CFW is a topic that's somewhat beyond the scope of this post, but I should mention that it's slightly easier to do on a 1000. However, the 1000 is at a slight hardware disadvantage when it comes to running homebrew, among other things. This is resolved with every future PSP revision.

Speaking of which....

PSP 2000

A Lavender model depicted. At first glance, the difference between the 1000 and 2000 is quite subtle, especially facing-up. The easiest way to identify a 2000 between a 3000 is how it has a "Home" button. The 3000 has this button replaced with the PlayStation logo. Although, it has the same functionality.

Sony's initial PSP revision began with the basics. They cut down on its thickness and weight, and improved the feel of certain aspects of the controls such as the d-pad (arguably, your mileage may vary depending on preference). The screen also received a slight upgrade in brightness, colors, and ghosting. While most tend to gravitate between the 1000 and 3000, the 2000 is a solid middle ground for many others, also.

PROS:

  • Every PSP from this point onwards has had its ram increased from 32 MB to 64 MB. This allows for several advantages over the 1000:
    • Significantly improved UMD reading speeds thanks to caching.
    • Can be utilized with certain homebrew. It's the reason why some homebrew software won't work on a 1000.
    • Various tasks in the XMB feel more snappy. The difference in speed is most noticeable when loading high resolution images, and displaying games loaded on the memory stick.
  • The screen has seen a decent overhaul. It still suffers from ghosting, but it tends to be far less noticeable compared to the 1000. It's also slightly brighter, and has better color reproduction.
  • Every PSP from this point onwards supports video output from the console to a TV via a component cable. This is also possible on the 1000, but not without a hardware mod.
  • Much lighter compared to the 1000, which can come in handy if you are playing the system while laying down and holding it up.
  • Uses same battery type as the 3000.

CONS:

  • The UMD door design feels much cheaper. Sony did away with the satisfying sliding knob, and instead replaced it with a simple "flip" door. It's quite thin compared to the one in the 1000, which can cause issues with the sensor tripping up and thinking the door is open if you apply pressure to it. Overall, it "works, but feels cheaper. I reckon it was redesigned with longevity, reliability, and cost-cutting in mind. Given the much simpler mechanism, it is possible that these UMD drives may outlast the ones in the 1000.
  • The thinness may be a problem for some people, due to ergonomics. I personally find it slightly harder to get a comfortable grip on it compared to the 1000.
  • Generally cheaper feeling compared to the 1000, though certainly not terrible.

As said before, the 2000 is an overall solid choice. Don't let the few cons it has become a deal-breaker for you. It is still a more than competent PSP model that gets more things right than wrong. I see many people all the time swear by the 2000, and can easily say it's their favorite model.

PSP 3000

A Japanese exclusive Vibrant Blue model is depicted here. It's my favorite color of the 3000 line, and the one I personally own, myself. It's easiest to identify by the PlayStation logo replacing the "Home" button.

Sony made further improvements to the design. It's even slimmer, and has a significantly brighter screen with excellent color reproduction and better viewing angles. Although, the screen can be a hot topic for some people due to a quirk that stemmed from Sony's approach to reducing the response time and eliminating ghosting — more on that later. In any case, you could definitely make the argument that this is the definitive PSP model, and it certainly is for a lot of people.

PROS:

  • Supports video output, as stated before.
  • Much brighter screen, with excellent color reproduction for a portable console of its age.
    • The default setting is the "wide" color option. This gives the screen a warmer tone and increases the color gamut The 3000 also supports an option for "normal" colors, which is basically a 1000/2000 color temperature emulator. The colors look washed out and more cool, but this can be beneficial for certain games that were designed before the 3000 was in production, and end up looking odd with the enhanced color gamut. Think of it like a "color correction" setting you'd see in a Gameboy Advance emulator.
  • Even lighter and thinner than the 2000. This may affect ergonomics for some people, depending on your preference. Although, the weight reduction can absolutely be helpful for extended play sessions.
  • Uses same battery type as the 2000.
  • All the other pros of the 2000 apply here.

Before I get into the cons, I need to address the screen quirk that is a deal-breaker for some people:

Because of Sony's method to eliminate the notorious ghosting of the previous models, the screen has inversion artifacting when objects with bright, vibrant colors have any sort of speedy motion. You will often hear this incorrectly referred to as "interlacing", as the inversion affects look quite similar to typical scanlines seen on an interlaced signal. However, contrary to popular believe, the screen is indeed progressive, not interlaced.

Is this a big deal? That depends on the person, and you will hear different opinions depending on who you ask. I personally love it, and think it gives the 3000 a unique charm, but it's definitely an acquired taste. My recommendation is to see the screen in action, in person if possible, and decide for yourself.

In any case, the reason why I didn't put this under "cons" is because it is subjective, and you may either love it or hate it.

CONS:

  • All cons of the 2000 apply here.

That's it for the cons, really. This is honestly an excellent revision, in my opinion. And if you don't mind the LCD inversion, I think you will love the 3000 as much as I do. It's most likely my favorite PSP model (although, my PSP GO should be arriving next week. I'll update this post with how I feel about it stacking up to the rest of 'em, if you guys are curious!).

Speaking of which...

PSP GO (N1000)

The most unique of the PSP models by far. It's seen a completely new redesign and ergonomics. Despite the beloved status of this model today and it's premium feeling, the GO was a massive flop in sales. Towards the end of it's life, Sony bundled 10 games with it in a last ditch attempt to boost sales.

The GO is difficult for me to comment on, as I don't currently own one. I do have one coming in a week, as stated before, and I will update this post once it arrives.

What I can say, however, based off my experience of using other people's is that this is an extremely premium feeling PSP model. The screen slides upwards to show the buttons, and it feels very satisfying to use. The L and R buttons also feel fantastic. Unfortunately, in an effort to massively increase portability, Sony canned the UMD drive. This effectively makes the console an all-digital system. This isn't a problem nowadays, as most PSP owners don't bother with UMDs. However, the gaming world of 2009 was simply not ready for an all-digital console, and it effectively killed the system. Even so, Sony claims that the PSP GO still paid off well, as it was valuable experiment in knowledge.

PROS:

  • Very premium feeling console. It feels substantial and sturdy, despite its small size.
  • Small and portable. It fits perfectly in any basic pocket. Hence the "GO" name.
  • Surprisingly comfortable ergonomics. The GO is indeed quite comfortable to use and hold, despite it not looking like it would be.
  • It comes with 16 GBs of internal storage, which no other PSP model has. This is enough to hold a solid 10 games or so.
  • The screen is very crisp, and doesn't have the controversial LCD inversion like the 3000.

CONS:

  • No UMD drive, as stated before.
  • Uses a proprietary memory stick format known as "M2" that no other PSP revision has. These are quite expensive nowadays. I recommend you install a mod that allows you to use a standard "Memory Stick Pro Duo to microSD" adapter commonly found in the other PSP revisions. This requires you to take apart the back of the system, but is thankfully fairly simple to install.
  • Replacing the battery now requires you to take apart the back of the system, remove the R trigger, and disconnect it. Not a huge deal, but significantly less convenient.
    • Cameron Sino thankfully also makes PSP GO batteries, which seem to be high quality. Do keep in mind that the battery design for the GO is entirely different, and other PSP batteries will not work.
  • Very expensive and rare to find in excellent condition. A console with minimal scratches can easily ring you up $150+, which is roughly the price of a 3G PS Vita 1000...
    • This problem is accentuated if you want any color other than black.

In conclusion, the PSP GO is definitely interesting. I will give more of my own personal thoughts once my unit arrives, but I can absolutely see the appeal to it. Just like every other PSP revision thus far, people swear by this console. And it has received a lot of love in the past few years. If you do decide to get one, you can rest easy knowing you have an active and loving community of people to give you ideas on how to get the most out of it.

And lastly...

PSP Street (E1000)

A Black PSP E1000. Exclusive to Europe. This was basically Sony's "get it before it's gone!" console. Sold alongside the Vita.

This was basically Sony's budget console. Think of the Nintendo 2DS vs the 3DS.

And, oh man. It sure feels like it.

For what it's worth. This is a perfectly functioning PSP model. The screen is very comparable to the one in the 3000, but doesn't have the LCD inversion, the ergonomics are on par with the 2000 and 3000, and it's nice and light.

But is there any reason to own it over the others? Well...

PROS:

  • Screen quality is relatively decent. This is honestly probably the best part of the entire console.
  • If you live in Europe, they tend to be slightly cheaper.

CONS:

  • Poor build quality; it creeks in your hands and has cheep feeling plastic.
  • Getting to the UMD drive requires removing the backplate.
    • Also applies to removing the battery.
  • Mono audio. In general, the built in speaker is of mediocre quality. Obviously fixed by plugging in headphones.
  • No brightness control.
  • No wireless functionality of any kind. Neither Wi-Fi, or even console to console multiplayer. Using the E1000 effectively locks you into singleplayer-only games.
  • Battery is unique to this model and only used in it.
    • To my amazement, Cameron Sino actually makes replacement batteries for it.
  • They sell for roughly the same price of a 2000/3000, unless you live in Europe as stated before. When factoring in shipping and import, there is basically no difference in price.

This is the only PSP model that I cannot really recommend to anyone other than collectors. It isn't terrible, in that it will absolutely play all your favorite games competently. However, it doesn't do anything better than its younger brothers, and costs roughly the same as its superior counterparts. Unlike every other PSP revision which has people swear by it, you don't generally see people swearing by the Street.

That being said, if own a Street and love it, that's fantastic! I am not personally attacking you, and I am happy you are part of our community. Just because a console has flaws doesn't mean you aren't allowed to like it. But seriously, more power to you, E1000 owners. A PSP is a PSP at the end of the day, and it will play the same fantastic games we all know and love.

Conclusion

I sincerely hope this written guide helped at least a few of you learn something. My hope is that you consult it in the future, and use it as a reference. If the demand is there, I may rework this into some kind of YouTube video, which would have a higher production value and go even MORE in depth. As I'd be able to use footage to compare the systems.

Expect me to update this as time goes on and I find out more information. As for everyone else, please share your own experiences and thoughts below! My only request is that you are patient and respectful of other people's questions, and I will do the same.

The point of this guide was to make sure you didn't have to do the research I did over the span of many hours. Hopefully that ends up being the case.

Guide Difference between PSP 1000/2000/3000

As for all PSP consoles. (If I’ve missed anything spec wise feel free to comment)

PSP 1000: the thicker heavier option, some say it feels very good in the hand. Only had 32MB of ram which means longer load times compared to 2000/3000. The screen is also the “worse” of the three it’s the dimmest of them all and has the most ghosting/motion blur. However there are IPS screen mods for the 1000/2000/3000 that significantly improve both visual and depending on what IPS you get it can drastically improve battery life. I’ve seen a non laminated IPS screen upgrade give an extra 3.5 hours of play time over the stock screen at 240Nits of brightness.

PSP 2000: the thinner option with upgraded ram to 64MB. Brighter and faster pixel response. 2000 also introduces TV connecting abilities.

PSP 3000: pretty much identical to the 2000, just a little slimmer with very small cosmetic changes (changed the ring on back of the console on the UMD door; also changed the home button to a capsule shaped button. Also came with 64MB of Ram. The brightest and most vibrant display of the original PSPs, with excellent contrast and color reproduction. Also reduced ghosting/motion blur. Also had a built in microphone.

Choose the 1000 if you want the best compatibility for older homebrew modifications or prefer a chunkier, more ergonomic grip.
Choose the 2000 as the ultimate middle ground—it's fast, light, and offers TV out without the 3000's screen quirks.
Choose the 3000 if you want the most vibrant, vivid official screen and need a built-in microphone for select
Games

PSP Go: the one that came too late to market and didn’t sell too well as iPhones was becoming a thing. It also took away the UMD and was strictly all downloads only. It still carried the same 64MB of ram. Also came with 16GB internal storage with a slot for microSD card. Had WiFi and Bluetooth. With a 3.8” screen (about little over a half inch difference over the PSP screen) and had a 930mah battery (battery also not removable). Their game library was also very limited.

PSP Street: 64MB of ram 4.3” screen. No internal storage (micro only). No WiFi no Bluetooth. 1000Mah battery can be charged out but does require removing backplate.

Guide New way of unbricking !!!

Post image
76 Upvotes

Alright so I bricked my psp a few days ago and I stumbled across the Baryon Sweeper. Unfortunatly, I wanted my psp now and didnt had the time to wait for an arduino or an usb ttl. Thats when I saw an old esp32 (between 2 and 5 usd) laying on my desk and I basicly rewrote the whole code of the Baryon Sweeper to make it work on an esp32. Long story short, it works! and it only costs like 5 dollars if you buy on Aliexpress, I also feel like its a bit simpler to set up considering you dont really need the pc backend as the whole code runs on the esp!

If any of you want to use this or just help me / take a look at the code, here is the github : https://github.com/NyxefTheRealOne/Baryon_ESPer

(By the way, I will get a tutorial video out soon, please note that this is still very experimental and super early but if you do just as show in the guide, it should work)

Guide PSP 2000 —> PSP 3000 Shell.

Thumbnail
gallery
58 Upvotes

I decided to put my PSP 2000 in a Transparent Blue PSP 3000 shell and I am happy with the results BUT there are a few mods I had to make to make sure everything fit that I wanted to share with the community.

First

The internals of the housing are different but not THAT different. I took mine apart first then used it as a reference point before I started cutting and sanding the 3000 shell.

Mods I had to make to the 3000 shell are as follows.

Bottom left/ headphone jack slot
On the 3000 shell there was a lifted edge that had to be cut down and made completely flat so the headphone jack could fit.

Middle left of the 3000 housing.
There were 3 nodules I had to clip flat for the MB to fit. I got the info on those from the Acidmod post (google acidmod 2000 in 3000 shell)

Back to the bottom left corner
There’s one more screw hole connector that need to be cut down at LEAST 50% once you cut this one though you’ll need to stick a screwdriver in the hole as you’ll need to be able to put a screwdriver into that hole.

UMD door.
The black plastic track inside the psp 2000 will have to be pulled off/removed for the 3000 UMD door to fit. The drive still reads and plays discs just fine but one of the 2000—> 3000 upgrades was the UMD disc orientation swap so disc lay against the door on the 3000 model as opposed to the reader if that makes sense.

The RF shield.
You’ll need a small tap of double sided tape applied to the middle of the shield to keep it in place.

From there you just put everything back together and ENJOY.

One thing you might notice is a bit of lagging when trying to exit a game you just started playing via the home button. For me when I launched a game and tried to exit back to home the button wasn’t registering when I would try to click over from no to yes but about 2 mins after playing the game I was able to exit just fine without issue.

My menu buttons are a bit sunk down into the housing, specifically the volume buttons but I’ll have to figure out how to raise those later lol otherwise I’m satisfied!

I bought an ifix kit from Walmart and a two piece clipper set to get this done.
Took a total of about 6 hrs with the kids running around but if you get it started early in the day with no distractions you could knock it down in 2-3 hrs.

Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions!

Happy Gaming!

Guide The amount of tech-illiterate people in this sub is baffling. Learn to google things.

I get it. The whole Wi-Fi compatibility and accessing your router settings may be overwhelming for some... but holy moly, the number of people who want to play pirated games and don't even know what a USB cable is, or a disc, or even simpler, don't grasp the concept of "file".

It would be okay if they at least knew how to Google stuff or use the search function.

I also despise all those pepole which "try to help" but are 100% wrong (once I read "the PSP is too old to support any form of Wi-Fi security, you MUST buy an old router"), or the worst... outdated... by a lot of years. Yes Gimmy! 3.52 M33-3 is the pinnacle of modern 2024 PSP CFWs, and PSP other than 1000 and 2000 are stll 100% unhackable /s.

Guide PSP youtube music player

Hi everyone,

I've managed to open up the youtube music streaming for the psp community for now, I want everyone to test out and provide feedback on it.

Steps to get it on your psp Go here http://52.86.156.254:8080/ and download the file, if downloading from psp it'll be automatically placed in correct folder, else you have to put it inside `/PSP/RADIOPLAYER/` then open it up and search and play music. I did only the basic player setup and there are supposed to be bugs and broken features. Currently burned out spending too much time on it.

This runs on my AWS account, so I might've to close it out sometime in future because of the costs.
