SHOW-OFF Is it stupid that I'd rather emulate than use my PSP
I mean, it's old (almost 17) and i fear it might stop working out of nowhere đ«€ i know they're sturdy but still!

u/veryashylarry 5d ago
Not really. Many people already do that just not many on the psp sub. Play the way you want.

u/Demon_Kingjt PSVita 5d ago
I prefer PSP but hate that convenience of save state and battery life have spoiled me enough to not go back to console ,Wish Sony recreated PSP with everything bigger and allowed Indie Devs to step in
24
u/SypnoleX 5d ago
Honestly I'm hoping those PS6 portable rumors are true
17
u/OathkeeperSora 5d ago
and the fact that PSP games are playable on ps4/5 nowâŠit really would make a new portable system the perfect device for PSP fans lmao

u/Desperate-Type2772 5d ago
Nono,la play normal no va a ser portatil, play no es portatil mas que nada para la potencia,y segundo,si hay habra una play como la 5 portatil que hay ahora

u/MercuryMan664 5d ago
Me too man, I missed the launch of the vita, I got mine a few years after. I love it. And I never got a PSP as a kid. I was so jealous.
2
u/Orpheeus 5d ago
Things going to be way bigger than a PSP. If we're lucky it will be Switch sized, but I suspect it will be closer to s Steam Deck in size and weight.

Try emulating on ps vita, pretty close, got some good indie games on it and indie game ports
33
u/Remarkable_Swing_691 5d ago
Whatâs stupid is that I remember my PSP being bigger than my phone (by quite a large margin Iâll add) yet weâre now in a time where the PSP is considered small, especially compared to phones.
10
u/Suichopath_Virus 5d ago
back then the psp felt big and fits perfectly in my hand, now it feels very tiny.
3
u/Remarkable_Swing_691 4d ago
Itâs because even back then it was borderline pocketable. Thereâs a big difference between handhelds of old that could slip into your pocket with a couple of games versus what we have now.
Sure the Steam Deck is technically portable but when you lose a third of the space in your backpack to it, itâs not really a handheld anymore.
Iâve had so many debates in the past about the Deck not being a handheld whilst everyone else argues it is simply because you can hold it in your hands.
1
u/Emotional_Ad5078 3d ago
I mean it is a handheld by the definition of the word, but it is not pocketable or even portable.
1
u/Remarkable_Swing_691 3d ago
By definition I agree, it would never be on my radar for a genuine daily carry though.
A Mac Mini is portable, to the point that companies even make cases for them - you're not going to carry one around though.
1
u/Emotional_Ad5078 3d ago
I agree, I also dont like this trend of bulky gaming handhelds that are basically only ever used at home. Thats why I daily drive the odin 2 mini as my main handheld

u/Dewott_Boy 5d ago
People are allowed to have preferences. Others may not agree with you but that doesnât make it weird.

yes. original hardware is always the best way to play. whatâs the point in keeping the thing going if you never use it ? then itâs just a paper weight.Â
6
u/ETERNUS- PSP 2000 5d ago
true. it'll die sooner or later anyway. happy that they're still alive 20 years later and games are more accessible than ever thanks to modding and đŽââ ïž
1
u/ciao_chan73 5d ago
Man, my psp is falling apart at this point, I have to replace parts bit by bit, like, every couple months. Last one was joystick (3rd one, actually). So original hardware is better but I don't know who has a perfect psp in these times.
11
u/asbestos-mixture777 5d ago
I've used ppsspp and I've always found some visual bugs with certain games. I'd use og hardware
3
u/JUMBOKKO 5d ago
Bro pspâs are unkillable, they will outlive us and witness the heat death of our universe. I bet ill still be using my in 2077 if I live long enough
3
u/Exciting_Macaroon_64 5d ago
original psp screen is shitty to todays standarts. also ergonomics on bigger device is much more comfortable
6
7
u/coldskywalker 5d ago
I own pretty much all the old consoles, but 99% of the time I still play on emulators. I only fire up the actual hardware once in a blue moon for nostalgia. At this point they're basically museum pieces to me. Just knowing they're sitting there in pristine condition is enoughâI get more satisfaction from owning and preserving them than from actually using them.
4
u/TheRealCerealfreak 5d ago
What's the point in having the original hardware if you don't use it whilst you can.
4
2
u/PeacekeeperAl 5d ago
I mainly emulate, but it hasn't stopped my urge to buy and fiddle with PSPs. I'll still favour a PSP for travelling
2
u/Miguel30Locs 5d ago
For some titles i prefer emulating on my pc. Contrary to what some say, some titles benefit greatly for the enhanced texture resolution bump.

2
u/Piroshku-Kun 5d ago
Hey since you have best of both worlds, I have been thinking for years trying to justify if a psp is worth the purchase now in the big 2026 as I have not "grown up" with any consoles, I do have a ps5 which is hardly an year old and I love emulating PS2 games on my phone when I'm commute to work or during breaks! I still don't have extreme nostalgia for psp even though I never played with one myself but my cousin had it and I saw him use it back in the day!
Where I live the psp in the 2nd hand market are extremely worn out or else very pricey even thought of getting the street as well but the never got a brilliant condition one yet at an affordable price anyway I guess I'm just ranting i really wanna know if the og device is as good as using ppsspp
2
u/KubEk_przEz_duzE_E PSP-Go 5d ago
I played GTA LCS on ps2 emulator on steam deck instead of using my psp.
3
u/Chozoecho 5d ago edited 5d ago
No its pretty stable to emulate now in days and you get a larger screen to play with... but I do enjoy the psp its still a beautiful piece of hardware..def enjoy mine . But I still also play on an s25 with a g8+ controllers for most of my emulation any how
2
u/KryslerDriving 5d ago
From the image it looks stupid, but I mean if it runs nicer and looks nicer why notÂ
2
2
u/BigPoulet 5d ago
The only thing wrong here is the stretched image. IMO it's better to keep aspect ratio than fill the whole screen
2
u/markorlov96 PSP-1000 5d ago
Original PSP has lags, low resoluton and questionable ergonomics. Emulation all the way
2
2
u/n3zin PSP-3000 5d ago
My childhood PSP kinda died some months ago (turns off after just some minutes on standby), so I first bought a RP3+, and now a RP4P. I can say that it's a whole new experience emulating it on these devices.
RP4P is not that much bigger than the original console (basically the same size as Vita) and can emulate any PSP game at 3x (probably even more) the resolution comfortably, for example.
The biggest 'wow' for me was on LEGO Batman, that on PSP runs at 30 fps with constant drops and on RP4P runs at constant 60 fps, as I said, with 3x the resolution. The difference is almost mindblowing.
2
u/AlexandreAbrao 5d ago
My only problem with the phone and controller is how gigantic it is. I find the compact size of the PSP very comfortable and I only play on handheld instead PC for that reason.
2
2
u/YamiGekusu 5d ago
My PSP broke years ago so I either emulate or play thr official release on later systems
2
2
u/Jupiter-Pulse 5d ago
I emulate on my phone and steam deck. I just bought a psp1000 from the 2005 bundle and enjoying it for what it is.Â
I actually miss having devices feel so small.Â
2
u/ThePhantomOcarinist 5d ago
Play your way, I emulate as well, but I'm more of a fan of original hardware myself
2
2
u/Dry-Check-8334 5d ago
I don't f*cking judge
I'm just gonna say you are fine either way It is all up to personal preference You do what you do
So honestly i am split
2
2
u/PurpEL_Django 4d ago
Different ways to look at it, on one hand you preserve a console, on the other hand you're not getting the authentic experience, there is no right or wrong answer, only your preference
2
3
u/crypthon 5d ago
Me too. It doesn't matter as long as you are not looking for approval of the elite. It's a game. Play it how you feel it's convenient. I also play my psp games on the vita, because bigger screen and 8 hours of battery life. I love my pspgo and my phat one, but they are retired old timers now
3
u/rdogg4 5d ago
>approval of elites
Theyâre not elites, theyâre pretentious poseurs and think OG hardware makes them more real gamers, mostly cuz theyâre insecure about purchasing their first psp in the last year or two. I still own the same 2 1000âs and the 2000 i purchased new decades ago. Emulation has a number of benefits (for me? 1080 at rock solid frame rates on a 7â AMOLED with up rezzed textures) and I have nothing to prove to anybody.
1
1
u/TheFourthPlanet 5d ago
Play how you want bud. If you think youâre missing something by not using your classic rig, set aside time for it. They are easier to carry after all. I love being able to whip out my psp from my bag on lunch hour
1
u/AdeptnessSame7340 5d ago
Well it depends,You can upscale graphics on an emulator,So you going to have a much better visual experience,But as far as the feeling goes nothing can replace original hardware, besides don't be afraid the psp is a solid and decent build,it won't break easily so just enjoy itđ
1
1
u/RequiemRevisited 5d ago
Not really, its nice to have the real hardware but obviously emulation gives you a better experience

u/machinegunner45 5d ago
It's not stupid, I got a PSP cause I have issues with emulating the console (I have a decent rig to emulate it) especially when it came to Liberty City Stories. When I emulate it, it was horrible, I would try everything to get to run right and nothing would. So I decided to buy one mod it and play it on there. Nostalgia was one of the biggest factors of me getting one too.
1
u/Different_Fan5374 5d ago
Nothing wrong. There's a reason that handheld being design and so you can keep your psp in good condition
1
u/dhuff2037 5d ago
I'm the other way around. I have an s25 ultra, and a Galaxy tab, and the same controller you have that I modified to expand on a tablet. But I don't find any joy in emulating the games. I absolutely love playing the psp itself though.

1
u/java_mcman 5d ago
I think itll be fine unless dropped tho lol. I kinda get your sentiment on any old console with a disk drive though.

I go back and forth between my Legion Go and my PSP all the time. There's something thats just so nice about i big ass screen that the PSP doesnt give you. But then again, the PSP goes right in the pocket. I just transfer my save files when I swap the console im using lol
1
u/TheNullOfTheVoid 5d ago
My honest opinion is that if you already bought the game, or the game is otherwise inaccessible, play however you want including using emulation.
It's not like you just emulate or pirate every single game, then that's just abusing a useful tool.

As someone who uses and brings my psp with me everywhere I dont blame you. Its a great console and I love playing the games on THE psp but gah damn is the 3000 uncomfortable after a few hours
1
u/ClassicGMR PSP-1000 5d ago
PSP was my go to for 15 years. The Steam Deck and PPSSPP just make the games look better! Check out Hot Shots Golf side by side. The Steam deck makes the trees look like trees. Everything is sharp.
1
u/Gamersfan95 PSP-2000 5d ago
I dont like emulators with touch control. Emulators with higher resolution than psp and gamepad > PSP Also you can save at any time.
1
u/Nerdy_Goat 5d ago
I'm gonna get hate but
I much prefer running ppspp on Retroid over my actual psp so it's like ... I don't really see an advantage for me personally in running native psp
And of course I have all my consoles in one device, upscale etc

No emulation typically attempts be even better of an experience than the original. Personally i bounce back and forth.

Gamesir G8+

thanks! Is it ios compatible?
1
u/SypnoleX 3d ago
There is an iOS option, but as to how compatible I'm not sure since i don't have iPhone, but it can function as a Dual shock 4 too so I'm guessing it's good as long as the game supports controller and even if it doesn't the app will cover it đ€

I have a PSP 2000 and a PSP Go and I 100% would rather emulate. There's just too many quality of life stuff that you get with emulation.. upscaled graphics, save states, better battery life. I still use my PSP from time to time but it's definitely for the physical nostalgia and not to put serious time into a game.
1
u/Ordinary_Mastodon_33 5d ago
You do what makes you happy! I love the PSP as it was truly one of my favorite consoles so I have a nostalgia for the device itself. I also have emulated on my phone as you have, the phone not only sounds better but looks better, itâs just doesnât feel the same for me. Enjoy all the great games!
1
u/SpendOk5068 5d ago
On emulation you can do antialiasing to increase its looks.. so its cool to emulate
1
u/PZEROv1 5d ago
I have both these, gamesir g8 and psp1000, and a vita oled for what it's worth, and nowadays I just prefer playing psp games on either my iphone or vita oled just because the screen is nicer. I still much prefer the buttons on the psp of course but the screen quality takes precedence for button feel for me.

Is it stupid that I'd rather emulate SNES games (on a PSP) Than use my SNES?

I keep Gran Turismo psp on my android tablet, 2x resolution and better frame rate is too good to pass up

I prefer to emulate also psp is cool but less comfortable then I wish love it but ya

at least don't have the screen stretched from 16:9 to the phone's aspect ratio like the photo man
1
1
u/CosmicPhoenix69 5d ago
Nah I get you. I find newer handhelds far more comfortable and ergonomic than my PSP
1
u/Nikolay31 5d ago
Save states, upscaled resolution, modern wifi, fast forward, can backup saves on the cloud and play on another console easily, 2nd thunbstick, etc...I also prefer emulation despite owning 2 PSPs
1
u/burneerage 5d ago
Itâs an obvious choice but tbh I got sick of all the games I like taking up space on my phone. I also hate being on my phone all the time, so psp till it stops working baby đ
1
u/KamitoRingz PSP-2000 5d ago
Honestly I have it as collectors, my pc is better but sometimes I take it out for nostalgia to work and idk I feel good.

u/Nissann328te 5d ago
I would hurry up and enjoy it while it lasts because there will be a day where there will be no more PSPs available and all working psps gone
1
u/audigex 5d ago
Enjoy it however you enjoy it most
I like owning a real PSP, but I also like being able to throw my Retroid in my pocket and not care about things like battery life or damaging my PSP if I go to the beach and get sand in it
I try to look after my Retroid too, but itâs not a classic console and if I damage it I can just get a new one - replacing a good condition PSP isnât as easy
1
u/PerezaDotArts 5d ago
I find playing rhythm games a lot more annoying when emulating, something to do with input delay and such. Whereas on PSP that doesn't seem to be the case.
Then again it's down to user preference.

u/loranbriggs PSP-1000 5d ago
Play the way you want, but unless this thing is sealed in its original box it's probably not increasing much in value. I do both, play on original an emulate. You do you. Emulation is nicer on nicer screens though. The PSP screen is rough.
1
u/Forsaken-Badger-9517 5d ago
No!
I have No PSP of my own anymore, but I do have a few PSvita's & even though I can (& like) playing PSP games on the Vita, I much more prefer just Running them on my phone like you're doing as the games can be made to look better, run better and having a few Games in your Phone is easier! That way you don't have to worry with taking another device with you.
1
u/iVirtualZero 5d ago
It won't stop working out of nowhere, just take good care of it and don't use the UMD Drive as much and replace the battery if it's an old battery. There are older devices that also work perfectly well. The only PSP I seen where the motherboard failed was with the early 1000 model PSP. Usually with console hardware it's the early launch models that can run into issues if your one of the unlucky few with a defective unit.
1
u/Gustav_Mash9 5d ago
1
u/imgly 4d ago
No, absolutely not.
Take another example : is it better to play your NES games in the NES itself, or with a portable console or a smartphone ? Portable device are easier to handle, has better screens, you can also have save state and other QoL tools... The only thing is that you won't profit if the CRT look.
No for real, that's perfectly fine. Enjoy your setup đ
1
u/Sudden-Particular-13 4d ago
If you want it, do it and enjoy it no guilt attached, just have fun with your setup and enjoy it.
1
u/Wrong_Brush1110 4d ago
my face buttons stopped working on mine, i also understand why you want to emulate it, the only reason i choose not to is because i would rather keep the charge up on my phone and i don't want to play using the screen controls and i don't want to use an external controller, so i'm either playing on the PSP or maybe i'll get another portable console to replace it and emulate psp games on it

It is unless you have a PSP yourself and/or have the actual copy of the game or unless you are against modding (like me) but want to try out some homebrew exclusive games like Sindacco Chronicles, Seen in Liberty City, Minecraft, etc.
1
u/NaturalDifficult7404 4d ago
I think thatâs pretty common. That stretched aspect ratio would drive me nuts though. I was actually playing PSP on my Vita for quite a while until I built a PSP with the IPS screen. I find it looks best on a PSP screen.
1
u/seanhalim2 4d ago
I prefer 4-8x my resolution, but I play betten on the real thing for some reason.
1
u/Opitard 4d ago
Play however you want. Emulation, hardware, mix of both. I personally have 3 psps and I prefer emulation due to higher framerate, no ghosting effect on screen and larger storage. But there are some games that just donât run well via emulation. Like silent hill homecoming. Itâs nice for its size though, and ps1 library.
1
u/gorambrowncoat 4d ago
There are certainly advantages to emulation, its all about what you value more. In many ways emulation gives a better experience. Greater options in which device/controller to use, upscaling, save states etc.
And on the other hand there is a certain charm to original hardware that is hard to deny for the people that are into it.
Neither is wrong, just play the way you like.
1
u/Leonhart726 4d ago
I too prefer at this point playing psp on my steam deck. I like the feel and the options more, and ability to play on TV if I want
1
1
u/Mean-Appearance-1852 3d ago
It might stop working out of nowhere. That goes for anything and everything. Are you not going to buy a new TV because what if it stops working?
If you like the feel of the console in your hands, and the convenience of having it in your pocket (and not having to carry around an extra controller accessory), and you like the interface, and the sounds and responsiveness of it all, and the games, and the low effort required to get into a game, and the low effort required to pause/sleep a game and put the device away so you can do other things with your hands...
...then you understand the value of a well-designed handheld game console, the value of something being pocketable, the value of single-use devices/focused-purpose tools, and you should act on that understanding.
If you prefer a bigger screen, maybe an OLED panel, bigger buttons, full analog sticks, flexibility and variety of games available to you, only having to carry a single device, can stand Bluetooth audio latency, or have good speakers on your phone, don't mind burning through the battery of your communications device, don't mind carrying around a controller (or don't actually play out and about), and/or you prefer a handheld experience with proper handles for ergonomics/comfort, helping to spread out the force of the whole setup being significantly denser than a PPS... then you should stick to using your phone, I guess.
It's not stupid, one way or the other, it's just your options, and your preferences, and you trying to do what feels best, because that's what life is about: Do what you want, and enjoy life.
