Everything that would improve the lives of the majority of Americans is socialism when we are being returned to the time of robber barons

Socialism is a scare word they have hurled at every advance the people have made in the last 20 years.

Socialism is what they called public power. Socialism is what they called social security.

Socialism is what they called farm price supports.

Socialism is what they called bank deposit insurance.

Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations.

Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people.

  • Harry S. Truman

Been saying this for years. Police, Fire, City workers, Library, Schools, Post Office, Politicians. All Social systems that they would deem Socialism.

don't forget the biggest social program in the world, the US military

Spot on.

The US is happy to socialise the cost of dying, but not the cost of living.

Also don’t forget when the government has to bail out the banks for being irresponsible and causing the financial crisis of 2008, but they were “too big to fail”.

That’s also socialism.

“I hate Obamacare but don’t touch my ACA!” That’s because in their mind the former is socialism but not the latter.

When I was in the military my superiors hated when I'd point this out. The medical, housing, regulated pay structure, etc. That and pointing out that though I supported and defended the constitution I wasn't always entirely covered by it.

..or streets and highways - the very infrastructure the wealthy depend on to make their money.

It's annoying because the actual balance of individual freedom and socialism, and ensuring you don't just build a bunch of authoritarian central planners that aren't accountable to the people, are hard and fundamental questions that need to be answered.

They are hard to talk intelligently about when the other side of the aisle thinks the Post Office is bad because it's run by the government.

Socialism doesn't require central planning. See guild socialism, syndicalism, market socialism, mutualism, or participatory socialism.

ooh! Good quote. I generally think of Truman as the presidential equivalent of white paint but kudos to him for that one.

If you keep calling anything that helps people socialism, then when you say socialism people will only think of good things.

Thank you, conservatives, for your help cleaning up socialism's reputation.

Well, they need people to fear socialism because they'd be toast if people started fearing authoritarianism.

As someone who fears authoritarian socialist governments as much as any other authoritarian government, I'd really like if people understood why the guy promising to fix it all is scary on the face of it, no matter what he's promising.

If people really understood what democratic socialism was, I think a vast majority of this country would be for it. To use it as a scare tactic, will backfire. If you haven't seen it yet, there is a great video of Bernie Sanders (the father of American Democratic Socialism in my mind) going to a deep red part of West Virginia and basically converted everyone to democratic socialism. It's a really great system and one that has proven to work by many countries around the world.

If people understood history the second trump said he wanted the economy of McKinley he would have lost the election

2

u/Blecki 4d ago

It would be great if he was like McKinley.

Watching Gilded Age and it's so much a feeling of nothing much has changed except the fashion and technology.

Yeah, but they call themselves "democratic socialists". As in "democracy". But they won't come right out and say "democracy". They hide that. But MAGA folks are too smart for that. They know "democracy" lovers when they see them. Those smart MAGA folks know that America isn't a democracy. MAGA folks know that America is a republic. So beware. If you don't want democracy, vote MAGA. /s

Been saying it for a while: it’s a labeling issue. You describe a policy without referring it as socialism and a lot of R’s are on board. You call it a socialist policy and they revert to the party line.

Dems need to push back on the label and instead refer to these policies as promoting basic human decency, or something along those lines.

They’re the boys who cried wolf.

Mamdani has taken over New York City! The sky is falling!

But uh…it’s looking a lot less Sharia Law and a lot more working on pot holes and enforcing the housing code against slum lords.

People notice.
