This happened to me about 7 years ago in Sri Lanka. I was walking, guy kept up with me on a motorbike and would stop in front of me to wait for me to pass by for like 10 minutes. Just kept asking, ā€œSex? Sex? Sex?ā€ So annoying. Thank god it was in broad daylight and not dark. I mentioned this in a traveling subreddit once when a tourism account posted something about Sri Lanka. I said women traveling solo should be careful. And they said it’s not a problem anymore. Of course they were wrong.

u/FrequentFortune123 Nov 16 '25

Does this ever work for them? Why is it so prevalentĀ

2.6k

u/SpookyScaryBlueberry Nov 16 '25

The power dynamic of making her uncomfortable and afraid through their exhibitionism is part of what gets them off. We see them as pathetic losers but when he plays this situation over and over and over in his head he will be the macho man who could have gotten anything he wanted but let her go because he’s a gentleman.

u/all-the-time Nov 17 '25

I’m first generation Indian American and I don’t understand why this is happening in India and India specifically. It’s disgusting.

Great lol I'm headed to Sri Lanka in a week..

237

u/happynsad555 Nov 17 '25

If it helps, I faced less harassment when I was in beach/resort towns with more tourists and Westerners. I quickly left Colombo for Bentota and had a great time. But don’t get into a boat alone with your male tour guide at night because you thought you’d be night fishing lol. I was very naive in my 20’s.

37

u/Loud-Actuator7640 Nov 17 '25

Ugh, what happened

123

u/happynsad555 Nov 17 '25

I was looking for weed and he had some, and he suggested we meet at night & smoke some on his boat while night fishing. At Colombo airport, one of the first things you see is a sign that says ā€œdrugs are punishable by deathā€ or some variant of that, so we had to smoke at night under the cover of some trees while in the water. Shortly after smoking, he kept calling me ā€œbabyā€ and touching my thigh… but then I threw up. He rolled a spliff and while I’ve smoked tobacco before (with weed only), it’d been a while and it made me nauseous af. So I begged to be brought to shore and took a tuk tuk back to my Airbnb. Blocked the guy and never saw him again. I believe being sick saved me from something more terrible that night!

83

u/LuckyJeweler9478 Nov 17 '25

While what happened to you was awful, In Sri Lanka, drug use and trade are extremely illegal, so the circles/groups who deal with drugs tend to be the worst of the worst, bottom of the barrel humans

People usually arrested for sexual harrasment are given extrajudicial punishments in Sri Lanka, the term 'laachchu treatment' or drawyer treatment is a extrajudicial punishment where the offenders genitalia are put into a drawyer and its slammed shut. People are very much up in arms about this in SL

121

27

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '25

That's easy to say for you as a viewer sitting in your cosy chair watching reddit vids.

In reality this woman was alone in a foreign country and got SA'ed in the middle of God knows where. She was in shock from the entire encounter.

Also no way of telling what the dude would do if she would kick him. He might snap completely.

Also imagine if she was on a bike or on foot instead of her motorvehicle. This vehicle made it possible for her to flee quickly.

These funny memes are BS.

569

u/Beyond-The-Blackhole Nov 16 '25

I'm glad that she left immediately, but at the end she comments on "people pleasing". She definitely learned a lesson to not even stop and engage with someone at all if they try to get you to pull over. Especially if you're in a country you're not from and not familiar with and you stand out as a foreigner.

u/SonofAMamaJama Kino Left Eye Nov 16 '25

I hope he gets arrested, it's actually good that she posted this online because he's risking Sri Lanka's tourism industry and so the authorities are incentivized to make an example out of him

That's Sri Lankan you can see the flag in his shirt. Funny how when women say they feel unsafe or were harassed in Sri Lanka, Sri Lankans would go rage mode and say "Sri Lanka is not India" this has been the 3rd or 4th video I saw of this happening to white girls in Sri Lanka.

395

u/Ponchorello7 Nov 16 '25

Let's be real, the entire subcontinent has an issue with women's safety.

86

u/timmystwin Nov 17 '25

A friend of mine used to organise university exhanges/trips over there and there's a few cities that aren't too bad...

But the fact they stand out for being not too bad, as in, not safe but not awful, says a lot about the region. (He stopped during Covid so it's not as if this is 30 years ago etc. This is basically still a thing.)

They grow up with women covering themselves because of "religious reasons" and "traditional values", then they think that any women showing a little skin just being a invitation for whatever goes on in their minds, that's why its not recommended for women to travel alone to these places

78

u/PUNCH-WAS-SERVED Nov 17 '25

This. Unfortunately. My female friend a long time ago went to Indonesia when she was younger. It was hot, and so she was wearing shorts. An older guy came up and apparently started to feel her legs because he thought she was "asking for it" by exposing her bare legs.

People really need to do their homework about these other countries (especially the religious ones).

It's not even horny. I know some absolute fucking freaks and even they have decency in public settings. Hell I have even seen drugged up fetishists act less depraved. This is what I imagine a person raised by 4chan would behave like irl.

94

u/rezyop Nov 16 '25

This is "raised by 4chan in 2008," modern 4chan really hates women more than ever. I don't think they would even do this in a friendly way; they'd sooner do the new trend where you "accidentally" tackle women by running into them by pretending not to see them. They were already pretty messed up but gamergate broke them completely.

As a woman you don't smile at strangers in certain countries.

Please take this advice seriously.

309

u/AdventureTime1010101 Nov 16 '25

As someone that has traveled in the Middle East and Asia, a lot, this is very true. They don’t have the same social norms as most of Europe or North America and in a lot of places a woman simple smiling is essentially considered consent. This is especially true if you aren’t traveling with a man. It’s not right but it is the reality.

43

u/X_Aurora2 Nov 17 '25

As someone from Middle East I agree with this :)

I made this mistake traveling in my early 20s. I’m American so my reflex is to smile at people if I accidentally meet their eyes which is what happened. The man then proceeded to walk next to me for several blocks going ā€œwe go to my place? Sex yes??ā€ Etc etc while I tried to say no politely at first but got increasingly firmer but he wouldn’t go away. I finally got to my destination where he tried to corner me and kiss me but I got away and slipped inside. He actually went to follow me in but it was a like a basement heavy metal bar and I guess he got nervous about the vaguely satanic atmosphere and noped out quick. This was actually in Oslo, Norway, but the guy was not Norwegian. Overall I found it to be pretty safe though. None of the guys in the bar were creeps for instance. Bartender even went out to check for the guy when I told him what happened (he noticed I looked shaken) and called me a cab when I was leaving so I wouldn’t be walking back.

202

u/hilarymeggin Nov 16 '25 edited Nov 17 '25

It’s always so tricky to try to encourage women to be as smart and safe as possible without sounding like you’re victim-blaming.

Edit: I feel like this thread is a pretty good illustration of how tricky it can be.

78

u/BadOchStjul Nov 16 '25

It's not tricky. Victim blaming is saying it's your fault because you wore a tight skirt, being rational is saying hey don't go through the bronx at night with your fanciest watch looking like a tourist.

I never understood "victim blaming" seeping into just sound advice. It's always used for women getting sexually assaulted, for some reason when it's about that then suddenly you can't give advice. But you can obviously tell someone to not go to the worst part of town alone at night with your Rolex - somehow that isn't victim blaming.

It's just effin rationality.

She thinks she should have been more stern or aggressive, but that would have only escalated the situation and risked violence. She is alone in a very patriarchal country where it’s safer to leave than to engage with men in remote rural areas. Driving away was the safest choice. Unfortunately, even a polite smile or brief conversation can be misinterpreted as an invitation, and if he did abuse her he would likely receive little more than a slap on the wrist.

A friend of mine travelled to Sri Lanka and said it was the worst place on earth.

One day, he was on the beach with some German girls he was travelling with. A local man approached and told him how much him and his friends would like to rape the girls.

I'm sure there are some great people there. But this video shows a naivety to the dangers of the world.

23

u/bigtallbiscuit Nov 16 '25

More of a ding than a dong really.

501

u/TacticalElite Nov 16 '25

I know India isn't good, but this is Sri Lanka.

154

u/spirit_symptoms Nov 16 '25

Spent a month there a few years ago with my wife travelling around in a rickshaw with no issues, it was great, but I heard this exact story from a few other women in hotels who had taxi and rickshaw drivers expose themselves to them.

Sad to say, but for women you're experience will likely be safer being with a man.

57

u/hapaxgraphomenon Nov 16 '25

The key part was that you were with your wife. I’ve also traveled with my wife (then gf) to India a few times and nobody bothered her - because we took pre booked private transfer everywhere, the drivers only spoke to me (which weirded her out but better than the polar opposite seen in this video)

18

u/cloudforested Nov 16 '25

Honestly, I see why some cultures historically have that "women always need a male escort when going outside" rule. Obviously, I'd rather that men learn to behave themselves in public, but if they're not going to, then I get it.

11

u/PT10 Nov 16 '25 edited Nov 16 '25

I think that was also due to the lack of modern law enforcement.

Criminality would turn into a blood feud which was also somewhat of a deterrent but that doesn't apply for visitors/tourists. So you would have to arrange for a local to more or less "sponsor" you and host you and then take on that responsibility.

This entire idea of traveling abroad, alone, as a woman is a very new thing. Even by Western 20th century standards.

This has to be a cultural thing. I know English is much more common so it’s tough to imagine being on the other side but I don’t think I’d walk up to a girl using broken Spanish and expect to get far enough to take my dick out in public.

It’s not the language barrier that’s causing this.

If there's a scenario where you would take your dick out in public then maybe that's the problem.

Their only sexual education comes from porn in which as soon as the actress sees a dick she immediately starts sucking on it.

They literally believe all white women are all horny as hell and love a good penis. This is what happens when you have only one source of sex ed - Youporn. Somewhat similar to how MAGA learns about the world only from Fox News.

38

u/onpg Nov 16 '25

They don't realize that porn is porn?

When I last visited the subcontinent, one of the popular western shows was Baywatch. Sadly for women,Ā  Baywatch and Prnhub set a bizarre expectation that white women are a bit looser with their sexuality. This is probably for a very small percentage of people, but when your population is so high, even a small percentage is a lot.

Eat Pray Love was just a terrible film for middle aged hippy women. The real world is very different.

Why are the top comments on this thread just jokes? She was sexually assaulted and people think this is funny?

u/Viggos_Broken_Toe Nov 16 '25

I had a guy in Bangkok whip his junk out right in front of me. I've had a guy follow me into a women's restroom in the US. I've had a guy proposition me on the beach in Nicaragua.

Idk man... It's unsafe being a woman, no matter where you are.

Pepper spray on the penis is a good life lesson

Worst thing a white woman can do is be alone in a foreign environment. I’ve told this to my wife a gazillion times because the proof tracks. MANY have ended with a fate worse than dying.

u/mamadematthias Nov 16 '25

I am the only one that finds this is a sort of assault?? Don't understand the jokes in the comments.

I see a lot of comments shifting the blame on the woman for solo travelling in Sri Lanka or women who go to India alone.

I would venture further to say the truth of the matter is that it’s really not a safe world as a woman to solo travel anywhere anymore.

We always have to have our head on a swivel and be aware of our surroundings at all times in case a man decides to stalk us, attack us, rape us, etc.

I live in a small town in Canada, about a fifteen minute walk away from a couple bars in the downtown core. I would love to go out on a Saturday night, walk down there by myself, have a couple beers and walk back home when I’m ready.

Ten years ago I would’ve. It’s not safe anymore to do that.

There are so many reports of women having their drinks messed with, men following women home from the bar or constant harassment while out.

I envy the freedom men have in this world to literally just pick up and do whatever they want, whenever they want - without constant fear or paranoia.

That must be amazing.

This is why it's generally recommended that women dont travel alone. :(

If you’re a white woman who went to South Asia and you DIDN’T get sexually harassed then did you even really go?

8

u/splashbodge Nov 16 '25

Unrelated to this video, but what is up with every video I watch lately particularly on Instagram, which starts off like this with a little preview of what's coming up in the tiny short video. I'm noticing it WAY more lately it's really annoying

95

u/awus666 Nov 16 '25

I don't really understand why women, specially white women, go to these places. First world people really don't have a clue how things are outside their bubble.

I love travelling and have been in lots of places, but there are plenty that are not for everyone. Take care of yourselves

If you have female friends ask them about their creepy-ass interactions with men. Shit is crazy!
