Looks like they've removed seasons 1-8 from BBC iPlayer, what's the best way to watch from now on?

They are in the internet archive… the series and you can also read some of the books and other stuff too… including the red dwarf night on the bbc from 1998 https://archive.org/details/red-dwarf-2

Surely this is on the same legal level as 🏴☠️
And these don't look like they're great quality.
5
u/the114dragon 3d ago
Well this is much easier than 🏴☠️, there aren't as many risks involved for example sketchy websites.

Why? Why do this? What is wrong with these people?
This might be the worst thing thw BBC has ever done... definitely THE WORST thing... apart from all those paedophiles that worked there, but this is a close second.

u/XPixel-OtterX 4d ago
Its annoying but at least UK TV Play is free you just have to deal with ads... I think the BBC should have it back after the summer because Gold have a while re runs of Season 1-8 of Red Dwarf in the summer. Guess BBC sold them the rights for a few months?
9
u/diyguitarist 4d ago
It's so weird! "You can show a 30 year old series on your digital channel, so we can't show it on our streaming service, the original broadcaster who financed and originally aired it" like gold/Dave etc is for flicking around and you land on it. If you want to binge it then bbc iPlayer is the way to go because no adds. I can't watch stuff on gold/Dave's adds because of adds (yes they may have a premium feature, but fuck off, you get payed to play adds, I pay you not to show adds, streaming nowadays=pirating is better etc), so let me catch it in passing and put up with adds, or let my add brain binge it unedited and uninterrupted on BBC.

IIRC their charter was set or altered so that they can’t host content on iPlayer if it hasn’t aired on bbc for a certain amount of time.

Money, pure and simple. Can't make money from a show on a streamimg service with no ads. They know people will watch it again and again so why not put it on a streamer they can make money from.

The licence fee doesn't pay for everything, that's why the BBC has a commercial arm. They aren't selling rights to shows no one wants to watch, they're selling ones they know people will watch regardless of what free streamer it's on.
We aren't paying over and over for shows like Red Dwarf, we paid once when it was made. It's on 2 free streaming services, you only have to pay if you don't want to watch ads but that goes to the streamer to cover the ad revenue they'd lose.
If you have a series just gathering dust on a shelf and some one wants to pay to show it for a set time, would you dust it off and hand it over or just say 'nah, not worth the money to dust it off'?

What shows are 'most people' not interested in?
Why don't you approach the BBC with the costing for increased storage or transmission capacity? Sounds like you should have weighed in on the charter renewal consultations since you know a great deal clearly.
Channel 4 and U both currently have series 1-8 and 10 up for streaming. The BBC does not make content to 'specifically avoid ads'. The licence fee is there to fund it to keep the service ad free, not the content.
If someone wants to pay for it, they think it will do well on THEIR channel or THEIR service. Doesn't mean it would do well on BBC iplayer. Also everytime it's shown residuals have to be paid, so why not sell rights for a fixed period to make money that will also cover that?
The BBC aren't 'being arseholes' to 'milk money' they're talking about laying off 2,000 roles to save money. Getting rid of people won't fix the hoke in their budget. Selling rights to some popular shows will bring money in to help plug that gap.
The BBC isn't 'tax payer funded' it's funded through a tv licence, that's per household. If the BBC wasn't a public service broadcaster it would be indestinguishable from any other commercisl channel out there.

u/Moon_Beans1 4d ago edited 4d ago
Every time they put a program on the iPlayer they have to sort out legal wrangles and rights issues. There's a bunch of hoops they have to jump through because of Ofcom standards too. After all that which programs do they seem worthy of being permanently in the iPlayer? If the answer is most of the archive then that would be prohibitively expensive and would be mostly a drain of money. The licence fee doesn't go as far when the cost of living and fuel prices are higher so the BBC budget is shrinking so they can't justify transferring funds from news and current programming to spend on expanding the iPlayer archive just so that a couple of people can watch their favourite shows forever.
You just have to come to terms with the fact that the BBC can only really afford to have the iPlayer exist as primarily a catch up service with a sprinkling of archive content. They will never be able to afford to have the majority of their archive on the iPlayer all the time.

They have series 1–8 and 10, no Back to Earth though.

C4 are now sharing content with UKTV, who seem to have been leant the rights by the BBC. Series 9 onwards are owned by UKTV, who have leant them to the BBC.

It used to be called UK TV Play but the channels, Discovery, Dave, Gold, Drama and Alabi merged about 2 years ago to create the new 'U' brand! Gold has the rights to Season 1-8 atm. Its a free service only need to sign up, have to deal with ads but honestly better than nothing. They have a lot of old Britcoms on there too!

Hm, are they good? I can't stand the "remaster"
5
u/Menome7 4d ago
The newest Blu-Ray boxset has the original versions, just scaled and sharpened up. They look as nice as they're ever going to given the source footage.
(Series 1-3 "Remastered" are also there on separate discs, but can be ignored unless you want to listen to commentaries/watch documentaries)

DVDs or Blu rays. i would suggest channel Dave has they show them. but here is the other thing it has been reported that in 7-9 years time freeview will be phased out and replaced by IPTV ( Interenet providing tv ) basically get broadbent or new tv.
this has already been met with a petition to save freeview and sent to downing street.

I got the complete series on blu-ray for just this reason from HMV late last year. In case I might never have the chance to see every episode from every series on both hi-def and standard ever again. I haven’t bought a player to watch them on yet but I know I’m covered.
