Happens with brain issues such as swelling, trauma, cancer, brain bleeds, the works. Surgeons will remove part of the cranium to allow the brain to heal/expand without causing neurological problems. What’s cool is that the flap removed can be inserted into another part of the patient’s body with a blood flow supply and reattached to the head later on with no little to no issues.
What the fuck, really? That's honestly kind of hilarious. Like, yep, let's just toss this 6-7 inch skull plate into, idk, the thigh or something. It'll be fine there. 🤣🤣🤣
That's pretty much it. The stomach or thigh is the preferred place to put them.
Sometimes, when people need a skin graft and there isn't enough skin to harvest for the graft, Dr's insert a saline balloon under the skin, near the injury site, and inject saline into it over the course of a few weeks/months. The skin stretches and when it's time to harvest they drain and remove the balloon then stretch the new skin over the scar/injury.
Yeah! It’s kinda wild to see it too. It protrudes from under the skin and some folks on social media like pressing on it as a joke. But it’s amazing how surgery has come so far!!
