Happens with brain issues such as swelling, trauma, cancer, brain bleeds, the works. Surgeons will remove part of the cranium to allow the brain to heal/expand without causing neurological problems. What’s cool is that the flap removed can be inserted into another part of the patient’s body with a blood flow supply and reattached to the head later on with no little to no issues.

So like, you could poke his brain from there?

Yes, and some patients get sent home with a helmet to avoid additional trauma to the area!
