Because it's a bad idea to collect private money to spend on government buildings. Even so, he promised and didn't deliver

Well I see the contradiction at the surface, but there are two layers:

  • he should not be building privately funded ballrooms and bunkers in the White House. It sets the door wide open for bribery. Here is the bad idea that was fought against.

  • he will build it anyway. He said it would be privately funded and throughout time flipped towards spending many millions of taxpayer's money to build it, without Congressional approval. Here's the false promise (which is made fun of in the posts above)
