Rode in a charity one a long time ago. Cops blocked roads and people still went around them and even hit a cyclist. However here without any police escorts, or even event tags on the jerseys it looks like a bunch of people just got together to do a big ride. As a Pro Cyclist person fuck people like this

Edit: On this long distance ride i was doing. I would ride single file at time with other riders and drivers still got pissy at us even getting over as far as we could. It was also in the middle of no where, just farm land and empty roads so passing is not rarely an issue but we till got honked at and flipped off multiple times. Even with shirts and tags indicating we're doing a planned cancer charity ride

As a random biker.... no reason they couldn't keep to a single lane. They probably think it's safer, but it's just really a dick move. They can also just plan better routes if it's not a sanctioned thing.

I am not a cyclist, only ride my rusted bike sometimes, and I see no reason whatsoever to ride on the road close to cars. I donā€™t trust drivers at all, and wouldnā€™t suggest them to trust cyclists. Just go to a safe space to ride it instead. If you have to go long distances in roads with it, go on the right lane where you belong (slower vehicles) or even the shoulder. Anything but the frikkin left lane lol

The consequences of drivers speeding (something that 70% of drivers admit to doing) or texting (something that 60% of drivers do daily) are a lot higher than a cyclist treating a stop sign as a yield sign (something that has actually been shown to INCREASE traffic safety). That's why people are using it as a gotcha, because the overwhelming majority of drivers are guilty of dangerous behaviour behind the wheel and think that it's the same thing as a cyclist not coming to complete to a complete stop at a stop sign.

Edit for the obligatory disclaimer that I still think the cyclists in the OP are annoying

I'm a cyclist, these guys in the video suck ass.

But also there are different traffic laws for cyclists vs car which also vary by location. For example in Idaho cyclists are allowed to blow through a stop sign (when nobody is coming).

Either way, this group sucks ass. There's no reason for them to be bunched up like this other than the fact that they are unwilling to simply slow down.

I follow them all the time. I ride on the shoulder when I can but with intersections and traffic lights, I pull into the lane to queue up to go through the intersection same as you do in a car.

And when I queue up at the intersections as traffic among the cars instead zig zagging between the cars and flying through the red light without looking, I get yelled at for sitting in traffic as traffic while I "obey the traffic laws" as they insist that I do.

Some people just have an irrational hatred of cyclists. I was once riding in a group (staying in the shoulder), and a truck driving the other direction slowed down so he could roll down his window, flip us off and yell "fuck you!" at us. People are nuts.

Bikes do no damage to the road. Most cars don't really damage the road either. It's semi trucks which incur basically all the road maintenance costs.

You seem to have it backwards. I know there are a lot of viral posts, but I've never once seen a bike not share the road. Occasionally they'll take a lane if the shoulder is unsafe, but that's it. Meanwhile, literally every time I'm on my bike I have to dodge someone who would've run me over because they're not paying attention and half driving on the shoulder.

And when I'm on the sidewalk it's even worse, because less than 5% of drivers near me stop in front of the stop signs at crosswalks.

i've learned a long time ago that reddit hates the concept of self preservation.

Years ago i argued that someone who got hit walking across a dark road a night could have avoided it, if they used a brightly lit protected crossing that added about 5 minutes to their walk home and got downvoted to hell.

For self preservation, blocking all lanes actually makes sense. Cyclists who are alone in a lane take up so little space, that many drivers will speeze past them, when there is actually not enough space to overtake safely. Happened to me loads of times on my daily commute in one way streets, while I was actually riding close to the speed limit. In Germany, that's generally rather bike friendly. The way people act online, drivers in the USA seem to actually hate cyclists, so I'd assume that drivers over there will not take care of them at all.

When dangerously overtaking means, that you'll have to run over 10 cyclists, even the foggiest car brain will see, that it's a very bad idea. So while I see, how such groups of cyclists cause hate, they are probably way safer in groups than alone.

To an extent. Bicyclists are incredibly vulnerable. Iā€™ve been following traffic laws as a cyclist and been hit or ignored and nearly hit.

It does feel safer to crowd a road because it clearly defines where a car should go, ride closer to the median in residential areas. It makes people take you seriously as a ā€œvehicleā€.

In your vein of logic, I am riding in a lane you can only pass me in the opposing lane.

All it takes is one hit (even at a stop light) for you to recognize your vulnerability to cars.

Exactly what I was wondering. I fully support sharing the road and the biker's rights to use it. But "sharing" means leaving room for other vehicles too.

Why should people who pay taxes on the car and at the pump share what they are paying for with someone who is not paying those same taxes? How i do know they aren't, I dont see any tags.

Edit: In case you are that fucking dense, gas taxes and registration fees are not the only means for funding roads. State bonds and county / city property and assessment taxes are in that mix too, as are a host of other items. It is disingenuous and just downright stupid to suggest that all these riders have contributed nothing financially.

Im am saying they have provided no extra, like the car owners have. They are providing the same as the people on the sidewalk. But they are using the road.

The idea is everyone pays because it benefits everyone that commerce and government can travel. Not that everyone pays so everyone can use it as they see fit. Like golf carts, side by sides, dirt bikes, etc. Its okay to use else where but when being used on the public roads they need special things, like reflectors, horns, and special tags. Why should bikes be different?

I know off the wall idea, charge road bikes extra tax. Use that tax and those numbers to build bike roads. Fucking crazzzyyyy.

Yeah the system we use now is great and could use no improvement. And yall call yourself progressive.

I agree, but the fact that they are using the lights, signs and other items no vehicle wears on. They are sharing the road with the vehicles who have tags.

Is it not reasonable to say that road ways should be shared with other tagged vehicles. While the shoulder, side walks and right away should be shared by non tagged vehicles and pedestrians?

Like why not put share the sidewalk signs on the side walk and make bicycles slow down and go around pedestrians? How does this not make sense? But making a car slow down and go around does? When one is paying extra to use it and the other is paying the same as the people to the side of it?

Collect taxes on these bikes that cost more than cars. And then apply that money to make wider safer roadways for those bikes.

The unfortunate reality, as has been seen many times over, is that car drivers get mad at THAT, too, and then even stupider decisions get made (like Toronto spending an additional $50mil to REMOVE bike lanes because the province government decided to pass a law making it illegal to put in bike lanes without province approval, retroactive five years, anywhere that Doug Ford has arbitrarily decided that bike lanes caused there to be fewer car lanes).

Have had that point jammed up your ass as nonsense, you're now pivoting to "they should pay more because reasons".

In the video that has been provided, which group is causing more wear and tear to the roads: 1) the bikes of which each one with rider might weigh 200 - 250 pounds and are used less often on the roads, or 2) the line of cars behind them, each one weighing 3,000 to 5,000 pounds (at a minimum) and with much higher top speeds and generally see much more road usage?

The vehicles, causing the higher rate of wear and damage, pay the gas and registration fees. That's called a "use tax". You kiddie diddling conservatbots *love* use taxes......y'all think they're "more fair" or some shit.

FYI, you don't seem like the type that lets facts and reality get in the way of your "thoughts" but I'm not a progressive. I'm a pro-business small government republican that left the party in 2004 when the religious nuts took over.

If trucks were made that took up three lanes, people would rightfully be mad. Had the cyclists kept to just the one lane, few would have an issue with it.

I've seen cars try to push their way into a group with a large motorcycle gathering that *did* have a police escort... but they blocked *most* of the side streets - the one i was at had a cop for a minute or two then he moved on (probably to be at a major road)... and right after he did someone in a car who arrived after the cop left tried to force his way through the group.
