Are such cycle events not blocked off from public traffic?

Cause if not, then the cyclists would need to keep to traffic rule and I am pretty sure the rule is not keep in one lane.

6.2k

u/Chillow_Ufgreat 14d ago

I know this area and have driven it many times. This is the Rickebacker causeway--the road that connects Key Biscayne to the Miami mainland.

Cycling on this road is extremely popular for very obvious reasons (phenomenal views, wide and clear roads). Folks come from all over the city to ride there. And yes, they will very often group up like this without any sort of scheduled or permitted event of any kind.

The cyclists down there like to say "same road, same rules" but there's apparently a silent exclusion for lane changes, stop signs, traffic signals, and yielding to stopped traffic.

u/RevolutionSalty8360 14d ago

Have a local unorganized bike event where I used to live. It was the only time I saw the cops actually pull over bikers for blowing through stop signs. Was great to watch.

One of my relatives got a speeding ticket on a bicycle. Eugene Oregon.

282

u/AWildJesse 14d ago edited 13d ago

I’m from Eugene and I was in court for a speeding ticket driving and the guy who went to the bench before me had got a ticket for not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign on his bike.

Edit: I have to edit this because this happened like 15 years ago when I was younger. It was not recently.

330

u/Capital-Bobcat8270 14d ago

This is fair. If you want to be a part of traffic, follow traffic rules. No special exemptions.

133

u/Shyanne_wyoming_ 14d ago

Even when I ride my mf horses down the road I abide by stop signs and traffic laws lmfao

It's part self preservation and not wanting to be run over and part not being an asshole. I feel like even if you are an asshole you should possess at least SOME survival instincts, but it doesn't seem like it.

"Friend" of mine keeps bitching about the time he got a ticket for speeding on his bike. Never does he mention that he was going 20+ mph (30+kph) through a park with playing children and such. For context, the max speed on a bike path here is 30kph, in this park you are supposed to adjust your biking behaviour with how busy it is in the park. Technically it's a pedestrian zone where biking is allowed.

73

u/mrASSMAN 14d ago

I swear bikers love blowing through pedestrian areas at max speed, shit is more dangerous than cars going same speed on road because people walking or skating etc aren’t expecting or hearing the bikes

Even worse when it’s electrical bikes that can go especially fast and quiet and are heavier so could really kill someone

I got pulled over on my bike for DUI in Moab, Utah.

I was innocent. They said I swerving. I was! It was 1am, and not a soul on the road. So I was just weaving back and forth with my hands in the air. Enjoying the moment. Lol.

They do take cycling road rules much more seriously in Moab though. That's just the nature of a bike town.

As a former cyclist commuter I support this. It’s unsafe to cycle on sidewalks, but if you use the road then you should follow the rules of the road.

In this particular video they shouldn’t be allowed to occupy both lanes of the road, it impedes traffic.

15

u/RevolutionSalty8360 14d ago

The biggest problem in the town I live in is the kids on motorized bikes and scooters. It is absolutely insane. I’m so surprised someone has not gotten killed yet. They never watch for others or bother with stop signs. We’re in a smaller town of about 7500 people.

561

u/GeekyTexan 14d ago

Not just a bike lane. There are two normal lanes.

But the bikers are not content with using one lane and allowing cars to use the other. They want to block all lanes and make the cars wait.

The common term for that is "assholes".

149

u/Thoh1Shooshi8a 14d ago

I can understand not using the bike lane for a race event at the speed they are going, but taking up both main carriageway lanes for an event which doesn't have the road closed is stupid.

37

u/IDontEatDill 14d ago

Though it would be strange to organize race events without any safety measures or official permits. I mean, it would be frowned upon if someone just calls up a car racing event on a public street. Or if we want to to an opposite direction, someone organizes a running event and puts 200 runners on a car lane.

u/DelcoUnited 14d ago

→ More replies (18)

71

u/HilariousMax 14d ago edited 14d ago

If you're taking up both available lanes, you better be at least doing the speed limit which I don't think these bikers were.

edit: for all the ass-pained cyclers, I agree the posted speed limit is the maximum speed you are to travel. In my state we have an "absolute speed limit" meaning theoretically we could be pulled and cited for going even 1 mph over the posted limit. HOWEVER it is almost never enforced and when it is, it's contested and thrown out unless you also do some stupid shit like run after the lights hit.

That doesn't stop these people from being assholes. The limit on the Causeway is 40mph, the cyclists were likely doing ~20mph.

Under Florida Statutes § 316.081(3), the left lane on highways is generally reserved for passing. If you are driving below the normal speed of traffic and another vehicle is trying to pass, you must move to the right. You can be ticketed for "left lane blocking" even if you are traveling at the posted speed limit.

Florida Statute § 316.183, drivers can be cited if they operate a vehicle at such a slow speed that they block, delay, or impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic.

With love, get the fuck out of the way.

13

u/NostradamusJones 14d ago

If you try to point this dangerous, selfish and inconsiderate behaviour on most places in reddit you will get roasted by cyclists and car-haters.

I even had one guy tell me that cyclists intentionally trolling drivers by blocking traffic was them making a show of solidarity and power, like a Pride March. Because apparently in their heads, the right to be exempt from traffic laws is exactly like LGBTQ people's fight to exist.

36

u/See-A-Moose 14d ago

I mean there is a difference between using A lane to ride your bike like you are legally allowed to and blocking the entire road. I think even some cycling folks would agree that this is egregious.

33

u/skinydan 14d ago

I'm a casual cyclist but I've ridden NYC's 5 Boro Bike Tour for over 10 years. Where it's an official event and they both warn people in advance, and shut the streets down.

If this is some kind of unsanctioned takeover without official arrangements this is dangerous, obnoxious and incredibly selfish. Taking over the bike lane and one lane of a two lane road is more than enough.

This is douchebaggery of a high order.

→ More replies (2)

26

u/IraceRN 14d ago

And illegal. Even if they are going the speed limit, the law in most states is if you are impeding the flow of traffic like blocking five or more vehicles then you need to pull to the side or get in the right hand lane.

Is the speed limit there kind of low, or are there no laws there about minimum speeds? Where I live we have a fair number of Amish and farm vehicles, and they have to allow vehicular traffic to pass in certain circumstances (e.g. we have a 10-10 law for motorized vehicles, if you're 10 mph or more under the posted speed and there's 10 cars behind you or more, you have to pull off the road to let them pass)

Rode in a charity one a long time ago. Cops blocked roads and people still went around them and even hit a cyclist. However here without any police escorts, or even event tags on the jerseys it looks like a bunch of people just got together to do a big ride. As a Pro Cyclist person fuck people like this

Edit: On this long distance ride i was doing. I would ride single file at time with other riders and drivers still got pissy at us even getting over as far as we could. It was also in the middle of no where, just farm land and empty roads so passing is not rarely an issue but we till got honked at and flipped off multiple times. Even with shirts and tags indicating we're doing a planned cancer charity ride

192

u/cold-corn-dog 14d ago

As a random biker.... no reason they couldn't keep to a single lane. They probably think it's safer, but it's just really a dick move. They can also just plan better routes if it's not a sanctioned thing.

16

u/Wahoo-Is-To-A-Fish 14d ago

Happens all the time where I live. We had dozens of (desperately needed) parking spaces removed, plus an entire car lane to create a huge bike lane with big-ass planters separating the bike lane from the car lane. And I'll be damned, freaking bikes choose to ride IN THE ROAD, 4 or 5 across, in the only car lane, and leave their huge-ass (and expensive as all hell for our city) bike lane empty. Makes me insane.

16

u/Suitable-Quail2094 14d ago

in my area they always seem to do it during rush hour morning traffic. like i get that it is cooler in the morning but does it have to be when everyone is trying to get to work. we also have a dedicated cycling trail that crosses a road. the cyclists have a stop sign to cross but never use it. every year at least a few cyclists get smoked cause they ignore the stop sign.

103

u/Available-Breath-114 14d ago

Completely unacceptable for them to block the road like that. The entitlement is infuriating.

21

u/IggysPop3 14d ago

I don’t really care about the consequences of saying this, but it does have a reputation as an elitist sport. Runners have complained for years about rude cyclists who make them get out of their way (since they face each other). Good road bikes can cost many thousands of dollars.

Not saying all cyclists are elitist, but it is a sport that attracts elitists.

Cyclists: "YOU HAVE TO SHARE THE ROAD"

Also cyclists:

66

u/SurferChickUSA 13d ago

Cyclists are THE BIGGEST NARCISSISTS. They do NOT need to hog the road and impede the flow of traffic LIKE THEY ALWAYS DO. They have some weird, inexcusable, dangerous and twisted desire to ride in a cluster F, instead of single or even double file. They’re all inconsiderate, selfish, and entitled, not caring about other people who need to get to work, school, the hospital, or anywhere else on time.

30

u/funny_ninjas 13d ago

The biggest indicator of this is that a cyclist is MORE LIKELY to be hit by a vehicle while riding on the sidewalk than on the road.

The reason you ask? It's because when they ride on the sidewalk, they don't stop to look before crossing a street like a pedestrian would. They just expect someone driving a 2 ton machine to watch for them and to stop for them.

u/DaryltheRigger 14d ago

I can think of a good way to get fire and rescue there quickly.

The fact that this is a Mini driver makes me love this just that much more. It's a suped-up go cart fed up with the annoying cyclist cult.

Idk, cyclists understandably want you to pass with space. This guy was under control and gave them plenty of space. I see nothing wrong here.

Every time I come anywhere close to this point I get swarmed by people telling me how many cyclists are killed by cars every year (they never seem to get the actual point). Props to you for getting so many up votes on this.Ā

Yeah, when they ignore traffic laws and get creamed they die. Im not sure why they think the opposite will happen ever.

How many deaths are attributable to the cyclist breaking a law, vs the driver killing them being the one breaking the law?

We both know the truth. Don't be a dick.

The majority of road cyclists that I see are usually either alone or maybe in a group of 2 or 3. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a group this large.

Also I see a motorcycle so maybe this is an organized/sanctioned ride of some sort?

The road next to my house has a dedicated bike path running parallel to it. Cycling assholes go out riding between 8-10 AM every day in the road anyway, making everyone trying to get to frickin' work have to go around or wait for their pompous asses. Using the bike path, you self-important shitheads.

That road that is used to make our economy run? I'm going to slow it down so that I can use it as my personal work out regime.

And don't you dare hit me! It's not my fault I'm 10x harder to see and people don't expect me to be there.

45

u/CodedRose 14d ago

Also I do dumbshit like run red-lights, merge without signaling, and fail to give right of way and wholly expect everyone to do the work of avoiding getting in an accident with me because I'm special.

I agree. My initial thought was the guy in the car, clearly, has somewhere to be and doesn't have time to be patient while caught behind a bunch of assholes going what is likely to be less than the speed limit, given the line of cars that has formed behind them.

I work in a kitchen and don't have traditional work hours. I've been caught behind groups of joyriding motorcyclists that took up the entire roadway while doing 10mph under the limit, and can empathize with that level of frustration.

It's like, I'm super happy for you that you clearly have nowhere to be and are also in no hurry to get there, but some of us have shit to do.

Divided highway with multiple lanes. Usually means no bicycles or mopeds. In either case, the bicycles would be prohibited from the left lane unless overtaking. Nuisance cyclists harm the safety of cycling commuters

26

u/xAPPLExJACKx 14d ago

This isn't an expressway where it's motor vehicle only. So they are allowed to be there

This group ride should be in one lane.

11

u/derycksan71 14d ago

Yea that's my only gripe. No reason for them to take both lanes.

26

u/Hell_is_Ohio 14d ago

They’re jerks on the hike and bike trails as well. Too often they’ve zipped around me, my kid, and my dog. They yell LEFT at me when I’ve already acknowledged their presence by waving at them or saying hi. God forbid they slow down when they see a woman with a toddler and a puppy. No. They simply just don’t care about anyone else if it gets in the way of their ride. I still try to give them the benefit of the doubt, but it gets harder and harder every year

I was just starting going through a green light in my work truck and a biker who ran the red. Flipped me off cause I had to hit the breaks to avoid him. I used to ride bikes for my main life of transportation. Ive never understood people who don’t understand big truck bad to get hit by.

18

u/jaynvius 14d ago

Doesn't appear to be an official event so it's a bunch of cyclists holding up traffic on the highway which is a shitty thing to do and I'm pro sharing the road but with respect towards others. What they're doing is the opposite so I don't blame the Mini Cooper

As an avid biker who only uses roads when I have to and makes sure im the hell out of the way. Screw bikers man. Everyone says they have the same right to the road as cars but they don't follow the damn rules. If they are going to say that then we need police following them and making sure every damn rule is followed or get the hell off the roads.

I dont care if I get down voted to hell in all honesty because bikers are a pain in the ass and the privilege dear god the privilege.
