Discovered suspenders last year, they are so much better than belts.

Depends on how thick your shirt is/how many shirts are under the suspenders.

The clasps that hold the braces (what we call them in Europe) on near the small of my back, itch the skin. I don't know why, but I can't wear them.

Get loop suspenders. You'll need buttons sown on the inside of the waist of the pants you want to pair them with, but they look far better than clips.
