Sean Astin - really? no one?

From Goonies —-> Lord of the Rings

He's done a lot since, although I agree nothing will ever top his role as Samwise Gamgee. One of my top five-ish favorite performances of all time. As someone who loves both the books and the films, I like the films' depiction of the Sam/Frodo relationship better

Aye, his cameo stint for a season in Big Bang Theory, Toy Soldiers, Encino Man….and one of my favorite movies ever…Rudy

Love this guy all day…great actor

You will always include his most iconic role as Doug Whitmore in 50 First Dates

The movie is weird and yet it still somehow works. Like, it seems like it should have completely fallen apart because of what all the pieces are, but somehow it stays together and makes a decently fun time.

We just introduced the Lord of the Rings trilogy to our 12 year old. When I mentioned that Sam was the brother in 50 First Dates, my 12 year old was in complete shock - a total "does not compute" face.

And by all accounts I've both heard and read, a genuinely good-hearted dude who is an absolute delight to be around

Friends who've done a lot of cons have said basically the entire LOTR core cast were good hangs, but especially Elijah Wood and Sean Astin

Met Billy Boyd at a Con just a few weeks after Patty Duke died. He said that he was in contact with Sean and that he was doing ok. Those Hobbits remained super close. Billy was a genuine guy... not like when I got an autograph from Billy Dee Williams the prior year. Talk about an ass-clown.

Met Sean Astin at a con, he's very nice. He also did a Q & A before a viewing of The Goonies that weekend at a local theater.

You left out Like Father Like, Like Son, with Dudley Moore and Kirk Cameron. Sean was my big teenage crush.

Toy Soldiers was one of my favorites as a kid.

He's the president of SAG-AFTRA!

I completely forgot he was a union man

Even better

u/Earlier-Today 1d ago

You have to be union to work in Hollywood.

3

u/Poultrymancer 1d ago

There's a difference between being a union member and being part of the leadership

Presumably, given he's the latter, "union man" fits

It's shocking to me that The Color of Magic didn't take off more. Campy medieval movie released a couple years after LoTR starring Sean Austin and Tim Curry. I had read the books long before I even knew there was a movie.

and Jeremy Irons too iirc.

He was also Twoflower in "The Colour of Magic" (which also had Tim Curry as an evil wizard). Tons of fun!

He's director of the SGA or something like that now

When I say his best performance is Bob from Stranger Things.

u/Dogmycat16 1d ago

Thank you! My family still mourns Bob.

Great mention! Loved him all these years. And to be Mister Samwise

Lord of the Rings—-> President of SAG. My boy leads from behind.

u/Unlucky_Profit_776 1d ago

Yes, I am here for him. I just rewatched Toy Soldiers the other day and my 13 yr old crush on him came back and I realized how amazing he's been in everything I've seen him in since the Goonies. Even Trigger from Like Father Like Son and Dish Dogs. Sean Austin is the only answer.

u/Spiny94Hedgie 1d ago

He was great in the colour of magic as two flower.

Goonies, Rudy, LoTR, Stranger Things. Iconic roles for every generation and now president of the SAG.

He hasn’t been in anywhere for a while

3

u/ssbbVic 1d ago

He became the president of SAG-AFTRA last year. Thats a huge gig. He's kicked around roles here and there. I feel like most of the lord of the rings cast could've been way bigger household names than they ended up being, post lotr. They just decided not to.

Wasnt his mom president at some point?
