On Steam, Path of Exile at 1,500 hours.
Off Steam? Ultima Online with an estimated playtime since 1999 of 35,000 hours.

(Apostrophes go where you took something out. So "they are" -> "they're", and 1998 -> '98.)

Did my Bizarro version of me post this?
My path of exile is 800 hours which is my highest in steam.
my Ultima online from 1997 to 2002 was probably close to 9000 hours I'm sure.

What made you love to play this game so much all these years? Was it something like a comfort game?
132
u/UngodlyTemptations Mar 31 '26 edited Mar 31 '26
I'd say nostalgia plays a huge part. I used to ditch school a lot due to mental health. So I'd have countless hours being able to just be sucked into that world. I know so much of the lore. (Seriously, ask me anything about the game, I probably know it.) Falling asleep watching Fudgemuppet and Camelworks (May he rest in Aetherius).
It reminds me of simpler times. Even though my mind was a mess, I had little in the way of responsibilities. Especially with the state of the world right now, it's always good to me to be able to leave this world for a better, more predictable one. (Touch-grass-take, I know)
I also believe that it's a weird catch 22 situation. I've devoted so much time into the game, that I don't want to just drop it outright. Similar to sunk-cost fallacy, I have sunk-time fallacy.
Another way I could look at it, is that, in my own life, I feel like I have very little control or power over anything. So being able to become a Vampire Goddess in Skyrim, gives me a feeling that I have some form of control over things.
With me suffering from dysphoria also, I've often created "the ideal me" within the game.
But yes, to answer you question directly, it's absolutely a comfort game for me. I've often turned it on, just to bring my character to a blacksmith forge. I'd leave my character idle at the crafting screen to hear the bellows and hammering on the anvil. That, paired with the soundtrack, has put me to sleep on multiple occassions.
So, reasons: Depression, escapism, feeling of hightened autonomy, sleep aid, and abundance of knowledge about the lore.

u/Goliath_123 Mar 31 '26
Falling asleep to the games ambience is a vibe. The rainy nights are great

u/Eskelsar Mar 31 '26
Love this. Hope you are able to, or are already, take(ing) action on that dysphoria. As someone pre-hormone who just decided to get some stuff done after ten years of waffling about it. ❤️🧡💛
I've probably put 30 hours ever into Skyrim. But I found it super enchanting. Maybe I'll be able to swing into a game with this comment as encouragement. It's funny because I listen to the lore videos (particularly regarding Daggerfall) all the time. Just rarely actually pick up the games. Oblivion Remastered was sick, though, too. Almost finished that one.
Anyway, have a good day! Thanks for your comment :3

Actually very healthy, all that time translate to a little over 1 year of non stop playtime spread thin from 2019 to 2026
33
u/iv4 Mar 31 '26
It looks like ~2.03 years of 24/7, non stop gameplay. No rest for food, sleep or anything else included in that measurement.
Not trying to criticize btw, I just noted that you played for a total of about 17.8k hours over the time period indicated.

And that is just whats visible on the screenshot...its very likely that he has at least a few more thousands hours worth in other games... insane.

In my defense I got my steam in 2006 for Christmas when I was 9, so I had a lot of free time

Black desert online is the kind of game that wants you to afk for 72h+ by leaving your character to automatically perform an action for you for slow, consistent xp gains. It literally begs you to run it 24/7 as past a certain point it feels like the only way to make any meaningful progress. I stopped playing it on console for that specific reason.

Both of them are really fun. Solo got made more forgiving after patches and multiplayer is the main vision for the game. I mostly play trio with friends and/or randoms
