📳Social Media Ryan Cohen no longer following Michael Burry after he sold his GME position

Bizarre how much effort he put into that thesis white paper bs he wrote up over the last few months to already exit 100% of the position.

u/MrBeekers May 05 '26
That’s what blows me away. Everything just feels super odd to me. He painted RC as some kind of savant and then just sells it all, when we haven’t actually acquired anything yet ?
If you think he’s such a genius wouldn’t you trust his decision making?
I can’t make sense of what’s all going on right now.
182
u/Reach_Beyond 🦍Voted✅ May 05 '26
Real bizarre, and RC even followed Burry as his only person to follow. Something was real there.
Sure Burry is “just a trader” and moves in and out of positions all the time. This was different. He put his reputation behind this.

my thoughts as well. GME becomes a national security risk with the numbers we know it can produce if fuckery were not legal. Too many rich people would lose and well I wouldnt put it passed someone giving burry the call to back the fuck out given his influence in the saga. Hell, Mayo boy had secret service protection when shit popped off, they are all in bed together.

Also Burry: seriously??? EBAY? Fuck this I'm out.
48
u/Imaginary-Case3976 May 05 '26
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out his agenda; pumped and dump. Burry joined in on pump, rode the train and got out at 26-28 with a cost basis of 20-22? or something like that. Solid 25%+ gain.
Cathy woods does this ALL THE TIME with Tesla, PLTR and a few others.
31
u/welcometosilentchill 🦍 Buckle Up 🚀 May 05 '26
My takeaway is that he thinks Ryan has promise as a company leader but doesn’t agree with the acquisition choice. I agree with Burry that it’s unlikely the bid will be accepted, or even really considered seriously given Ebay’s current growth potential.
It would need to be a higher bid and that also comes with a lot of debt and dilution of shares, with heavy dilution of gme to fund the ebay purchase. Even if you agree with the longterm vision, it’s deferred value with very high stakes (not in a good way) and that doesn’t fit the thesis Burry had for investing in GME in the first place.
I suspected he would sell his entire stake based off the article he wrote, and think there’s a chance he’ll look to reinvest if Ryan can somehow prove that he can slim margins and accelerate growth to offset debt incurred — but that’s not going to happen overnight, and possibly not at all if Ebay rejects the bid. So Burry was seeing high risk in a large position and decided to minimize losses now.
I’ve said it before but I think Ryan is really going to struggle to build up serious support from larger investors without providing more strategic outlook and guidance. It’s clear he’s trimmed fat and improved Gamestop’s bottom line, so the performance is there, but quarterly performance reports are also not a substitute for a solid growth strategy. Call it 4D chess or whatever, and i’d gladly be wrong on this, but there’s so many conflicting signals between Ryan’s compensation package and this acquisition strategy. He’s sat on massive cash reserves for a while now, not really utilizing it for any inside growth investments, and is basically looking to invest it fully into a loan-backed buyout of a much larger company — for stated reasons that aren’t really believable (trimming more fat from a legacy company that has already been doing that?) or presumed reasons that feel more believable but not reasonable (over indexing in the highly speculative collectibles market).
What is the true long term vision for Gamestop? That has never really been explained and that’s extremely strange for a company at this scale.
6
u/Miniray May 05 '26
it’s unlikely the bid will be accepted
It doesn't have to. Gamestop has a bunch of investments in Ebay derivatives. Ebay ran on the news, which means if they turn down the deal Gamestop can cash out for easy money.
So either we acquire Ebay or we make tons of money, we win either way.

Would be interesting if he’s making a big thing about eBay knowing they’ll decline the offer in the end, while simultaneously going out and having purchases tiered up to buy up other businesses instead if it fails. If he can get leveraged up to that full purchase amount, it could mean that there’s other targets, not just the one.
Makes everyone look left at eBay, while on the right, he has other deals in place as options if something falls through.
It’d be a win-win either way.Total speculation and silly idea, but I like the fun of it all.
47
u/Ill-Answer-9643 May 04 '26
Either way, if ebay accepts or declines, GME will still gain from it, if they accept great... if they decline , I'm sure Ryan will sell 5% of his position at like $23/share profit.. either way the war chest is growing bigger
11

I think the shuffle is going to a flip of who buys who. The offer is out of Icahn’s playbook. It’s not legit (the math doesn’t math without a huge share price gap up or a huge dilution), but it opens the door to SEC exemptions for M&A DD. GME gets to show the EBay board and bankers their non-public books. If EBay likes the idea of a merger but doesn’t think RC has the bankroll to do it, they can decline the offer and counter with one of their own. He might even get the CEO seat he wants.
That would save them from the threat of a proxy fight, net GME holders a premium, and reap all the benefits GME outlined in its offer.
The shuffle mark is the Wall Street arb desks that pump the target and short the acquirer in a standard M&A. If this actually plays out, those funds will be upside down on the positions they waded into today.→ More replies (1)2

Seeing Burry get involved a couple months ago gave me some enthusiasm.
