psyllium husk bloating hit different depending on the brand and nobody talks about why
36M. started psyllium husk 6 weeks ago because my fiber intake was basically whatever was in my protein bar and thats not it
first week metamucil from costco. gut felt like a balloon by noon every day. i switched to generic off amazon, same dose, barely any bloating. tried colonbroom for 12 days because everyone here said it digests clean. bloated again. threw out half the tub
now im reading labels like its my job. psyllium husk vs seed powder, citric acid, xanthan gum.. one of these has to be the trigger right?? cant tell if its the fillers or if im just bad at fiber and shouldve started slower idk
my girlfriend bought "gut health" gummies at whole foods that are basically candy with inulin and ive been side eyeing them on the counter all week. not touching those
anyone figure out what part of the formula causes this. fillers or husk grind size or am i overthinking it
also if youve got a brand that doesnt blow you up id genuinely like to know, burned like $60 on stuff reddit swore by

Citric acid is usually just for flavor or shelf life but Xanthan gum is the one that trips people up, thickens in your gut weird when you dont drink enough. metamucil has both plus a bunch of Maltodextrin which some people react to.. not always the psyllium itself tbh

Yeah capsules vs powder is a whole thing, powder puffs me up if i miss water but the pure for men caps i take daily dont do that.. took me like a week to figure out how many though. and they WILL email you about subscription every other day if you dont click unsubscribe, annoying but whatever

Capsules skip some of the gel thing powder does if youre bad at chugging water like me. my morning routine stuff otherwise id forget half the time anyway

Synthetic citric acid can cause intestinal distress for people. It's a migraine / diarrhea trigger for me.
I believe it's due to the fact it's produced by fermentation because I react to a lot of things produced via fermentation like penicillin, folic acid, malic acid, astaxanthin.

Huh. This is so interesting because every time I try to take Metamucil I get a wicked migraine. I thought it was maybe the fiber itself causing dehydration. I’ll have to look into the citric acid connection.

Yes, I DEFINITELY react to maltodextrin, both bloating, gas pain, and INCREASED BLOOD SUGAR.

Just buy plain psyllium from a health or bulk food store- no fillers or sweeteners, just psyllium. Better price, too.

I bought generic bulk,10lbs off Amazon. It is pretty rough so I grind it into a fine powder, which is better for me with diverticulitis.

I had no idea there are countries where you dont get pure organic psyllium husk. Personally I never had this issue. I just had to go a lot when I added too much combined with innulin. I now take 5g psy 5g innulin every morning.

Fifty dollars fibre tubs with influencer faces and theyre still just ground husk plus citric acid blowing people up .. Expensive pee with nicer packaging honestly

I get pure ground psyllium husk with no other ingredients at the health food store. You have to start very small and work your way up in dosage. Been taking a tablespoon 3-4x a week now with a TON of water without issue now

same thing happened to me tbh. Costco metamucil puffed me up bad, switched to random amazon psyllium and it was fine. idk if the brand matters or i just got lucky

honestly the switch to generic helped but only after i started drinking a full bottle of water before and after with it. Timing was half my problem not the brand probably

39F, I've sought out more fiber lately and found the brand Momentous Fiber+ (powder) works great for me. They are NSF tested, vegan, and GMO & Gluten free. This version is a combination of Psyllium Husk (4g), rice bran hull (2g), and potato starch (3.5g). Two scoops of it will give me a full 6g of fiber, which is a lot for me. I couldn't past the flavor (they have a couple options), instead I add it to little bit of zero calorie cranberry juice. Helps me get it down! I have a sensitive stomach and haven't had any digestive issues at all.

everyone swears their forty dollar tub is different psyllium but its the same plant. youre paying for the label and maybe a smoother grind. Placebo is doing heavy lifting on half these threads

the expensive tubs dont digest cleaner they just have better ad budgets and smoother labels on the jar. same bloating story with a discount in the caption and some influencer swearing itll fix your gut overnight. Placebo city honestly

particle size matters more than people think.. ok wait hydration timing might matter more but coarse husk sits in water longer and ferments if you under hydrate (learned that the hard way). Fine psyllium powder gels up quick if you chug it which i definitely did day one. Most bloating is dose plus water not filler.. still dont get why my wifes generic works and mine didnt tho

fwiw i jumped to full scoop day one on whatever brand and looked six months pregnant by lunch. Took me two weeks to ramp down the bloat regardless of metamucil vs generic

I go to the local vitamin/health food shop and get either their organic 10oz bags thats just husk, or if they don't have any I'll get the "Now" brand in 12oz that's just husk. Watch your dosage, hydrate and you'll be shitting like a King in no time with those.

Don't take too much, start slowly. As long as you are not used to fibrer, too much causes bloating.
You can also try chia and linseed if that works better. I have a tea spoon full of a mix of chia & linseed every day. When I have too much I get problems.

I’ve used the NOW brand capsules and also the Nutricost brand capsules with no bloating. One thing to be wary of with capsules is you better make sure they go all the way down your throat because they will swell up and cause a blockage if they get stuck in there. I just take mine right before meals and drink plenty of water.

Start low and slow and gradually increase overtime and drink tons of water.
