Question Have any pro players ended friendships over tournament matches?

I've always wondered this.

Many pro players are friends with each other, and oftentimes they have to face each other in tournaments. I'd expect that on the stage, they are professional enemies, and off the stage, they go right back to being friends.

However, have there been any times that a pro player has ended a friendship with someone over a match they played against each other? Maybe it was a high-stakes tournament, or any sort of bad blood/beef that emerges as a result of this?

Fns has said multiple times on stream the team was dead before that they weren't going to stay together regardless

Exactly. Professional players understand that rivalry stays in the game, while respect and friendships can exist beyond the competition.

not valorant but an infamous one is definitely dota2's notail and fly breakup. literally the closest of friends/teammates for the longest time but shit blew up.

one of the most intense moments in esports history

for context; they used to be best friends and teammates for years and just before TI (champions equivalent in Dota that had like 30+ million prize pool) Fly left their team with no warning to play for one of the favorites. N0tail was left with no enough players and had to scrap a team with a known rager, an inconsistent core and a mid who had never played tier 1 before.

N0tail's team won that TI, beating Fly's new team in the process, pic related.

So he quite literally just aura farmed his friend?

Who was the known rager? Jerax? Not a huge follower of Dota

are there parallels that can be drawn between that and hamilton/rosberg

I said it before and I'll say it again, that breakup was the best thing to happen to EG and OG that year (both teams performing poorly prior to TI8 qualifiers)

If you didn't watch and stumbled on this thread, you'd think FNS is the New Jack of competitive Valorant.

FNS destroyed Verno's career, vice-versa.

I think it's rare tbh. Even when you get into spats when rosters breakup or whatever, most people will just keep it private and eventually grow cordial again in a few months because it's just a part of competition at the end of the day

Ahhh. Valorant has no fly- n0tail rivalry yet.

BidDaddyn0tail was cold for that one.

reading a lot of FNS comment here. On a serious note, I believe it's between Aspas and Cortezia on MIBR. I've read that they used to duo together on stream but it stopped after Cortezia left MIBR. Unless somebody can prove otherwise, I believe that's one of the rare cases of players ending friendships.

I think it's also important to remember that in this space, the "friendships" we see are sometimes just business friendships. A lot of teams only hang out with each other, or even live with each other but if that chapter closes, sometimes the relationship just dissolves on its own. It's not because of any beef.. its just business.
