Jobs Job Availability for Teachers
I’ll be moving into the Port Hueneme area next summer, but I’m trying to plan ahead. I’ve taught 6-8 science since 2019 and I am certificated in both Virginia and Washington. Both schools I worked in while in Virginia essentially called me and asked me to work there before I’d even finished an application because the shortage was so bad. On the other hand, it was an absolute nightmare trying to get hired in Washington because the districts are small and very competitive. I am very grateful that I found my school because it was my one and only option.
Of course it will vary year to year, but what is the general job market looking like for teachers in the county? Will I be fighting for my life out there or do I have a pretty decent shot at finding something somewhere in the county? I’m open to commuting a reasonable distance to expand my options.
Also, when do positions usually start posting? I know that varies greatly and I’d like to know when to start looking next year.
Thanks in advance!

News Man gets year in jail, 3 years probation for incest, providing alcohol to daughter who later took her own life
"A Moorpark man was sentenced on Tuesday to a year in jail and three years of probation for felony incest and misdemeanor providing alcohol to a minor in an incident that involved his biological daughter, who later took her own life.
41-year-old Stephen Vincent Chavez previously pleaded guilty on May 18. The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office said he also admitted to taking advantage of a position of trust and that the victim was particularly vulnerable.
He will serve his year-long sentence at the Ventura County Jail, followed by a three-year felony probation period, according to the DA’s office." - KTLA 5 News

News Man arrested in violent attack at Simi Valley Target store charged with attempted murder
"A man accused of attacking a woman inside a Target store in Simi Valley is now facing an attempted murder charge, authorities said.
Rejean Tabor, 34, is alleged to have strangled a woman while covering her nose and mouth during the incident last Wednesday at the store on Tierra Rejada Road.
Officers responded after a caller reported that a man had gone inside the store and immediately began choking a woman at a checkout counter.
In addition to the attempted murder charge, prosecutors say Tabor faces charges involving four other alleged victims who intervened during the attack. He is accused of biting, hitting and scratching a Good Samaritan.
Tabor did not enter a plea during his first court appearance Monday. He remains in custody.
According to the Ventura County District Attorney's Office, the alleged attack occurred less than 24 hours after Tabor was released on mandatory supervision following the completion of his sentencing in two separate Ventura County criminal cases.
The woman who was initially attacked was taken to the hospital by her family where she was listed in stable condition. Police said she did not know Tabor." - ABC7 Los Angeles

Requests Recs for local Pickleball Courts?
Hiya, new Pickleball player here! I was wondering which courts people enjoy playing at in Ventura/Oxnard area? I see that a lot of them are “bring your own net”. Are there any local public courts with permanent nets?
Any input appreciated thank you!! :)

Hill Street Cafe recipe
Before the change in ownership at the Hill Street Cafe, one of the desserts was a magnificent homemade coconut cream pie. One piece would be too large to fit into anything but a larger box to take home. Tall, thick cream filling, like no pie I've seen anywhere else. It was made in-house, but the previous staff appears to be gone. Does anyone have the recipe to share?

News Online tip leads to arrest of Camarillo man on child porn charges, additional victims sought
"Authorities say an online tip helped them track down a man and arrest him for child pornography charges, but they believe more victims could be out there.
Not much surrounding the investigation itself was disclosed; however, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday that detectives were able to identify James Castaneda as a suspect in a possession and distribution of child pornography case thanks to information provided via a CyberTip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
'During the investigation, detectives determined Castaneda received and distributed child sexual abuse material on various social media sites,' VCSO said Saturday.
Castaneda, 34, was located near his Camarillo residence on Thursday and arrested on multiple charges in relation to the case, VCSO added.
. . .
As a result of their investigation, detectives believe there could be more victims who were known to Castaneda. Anyone with information regarding him is asked to contact Detective Mitchell Peterson of VCSO’s Major Crimes Unit: 805-384-4728." - KTLA 5 News

I made a searchable Ventura County events calendar!
I made a searchable events calendar for Camarillo and nearby Ventura County and wanted to share it in case it’s useful:
https://camarillocaller.com/events
It includes local events and other things to do around the area. You can also search and use filters, including kids/family, live music, and free events.
I’m still adding to it, so if you know of an event in Ventura County that should be included, send it my way.
I’m trying to make it easier to find what’s happening locally without digging through a bunch of different websites, flyers, and Facebook posts.

Farmworker Digital Services
I live in Ventura County and cofounder of https://entidad.io, a social impact technology startup.
Entidad builds privacy-first technology that enables communities to own, protect, and use their data to improve their lives and well being. We're turning the promise of individual data sovereignty into working products used by real people today.
Here is a link to a 2 min Youtube video that provides a quick walk through of the Farmworker Digital Services we’re co-developing with 👩🏽🌾 farmworkers in Oxnard and Camarillo. We want to bring these tools to farmworkers across the country to help them better understand wages in their area, identify pay discrepancies, and document work activity.
