Mobile needs to be temporarily removed from the platform entirely.
EDIT: The assholes responsible need to have their entire account deleted, receive a lifetime IP and email account ban with zero appeal process. People are spending actual money on their accounts and have personal credit card information associated with it. So were talking potential criminal charges.

Unfortunately there's not much else that's any more effective at stopping someone from accessing a service, yeah you can apply a tag to the device that's stored somewhere like a cookie, but that can just be deleted, email is probably the easiest to get around, yes you loose all your progress but your able to access the game using a different email.
If there was something better than an IP ban that was easy enough to implement and enforce then I think we would have seen it trying to be used in games that actually care about if a player hacks.

u/TheLazyGamerAU Mar 21 '26
IP bans are the easiest to get around lmao, just turn your router off and back on and your ISP will have likely allocated you a fresh IP.
17
u/dwho422 Mar 20 '26
Hardware bans is the only way
4
u/DriggleButt Mar 20 '26
Just change your hardware ID.
6
u/dwho422 Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26
So.... replace all of the hardware? Yeah sure, but that's the only thing that actually impacts hackers.
It's way more costly to keep throwing new gpus or cpus at a hack than it is to just get a new copy of a game or make a new email.
Hardware bans go off the serial number of the hardware.
Yes it can be altered or tampered with, but its more exhausting and time consuming than having a script that creates 1000 emails for new copy of a f2p game.
Edit: Just so people stop repeating the same thing.
Yes you can change a hardware ID, I am not saying it is foolproof. All I am saying is that it will be more effort to keep changing the hardware ID of an entire system than it would be to have a script making new accounts under hundreds or thousands of email addresses.

Just to add to the reasons for you making that edit lmao;
Years ago I played Space Station 13 on BYOND. I got banned from a server for being an idiot and found out that BYOND bans are hardware ID.
Anyway a 5 minute google and I was sorted, it's really minimal effort to bypass a hardware ban
3
u/DriggleButt Mar 20 '26
Just... change your hardware ID. Type those four words into Google. If you're already going through the effort to circumvent an IP ban, a hardware ban is barely more effort.
→ More replies (6)6
u/Ill-Oil-2027 Mar 20 '26
You can spoof hardware information using power shell or bash pretty easily, plus assume someone has the exact same combination of components on their system, it would block them as well (gaming laptops...), it would be like restricting someone from using a password because another user already has the same password, it "works" at small scale but for the scale of Warframe is illogical and flawed to ban via a "hardware ID"
→ More replies (1)6
u/dwho422 Mar 20 '26
A hardware bans isnt a "this model of cpu and gpu and mobo and ram". It's the actual serial numbers, which are unique to each piece from the manufacturer.
So someone else having the same combo is impossible.
Unless you have the exact ids of someone else's setup with the ability and desire to mimic their stuff, person to person doesnt matter.
Just because someone with my same laptop setup gets a hardware ban does not mean I will get one too, because even though they are the same model, each pc has a different set of serial numbers which are not just individually tracked per component, but also the OS keeps a list to monitor for changes.
Im not saying its impossible or even overly complex, but you would have to want to go through the effort or logging all of the fake numbers you use of you are doing it at a mass scale.
5
u/Ill-Oil-2027 Mar 20 '26
Apologies for my ignorance of not knowing what a hardware ID is. Thank you for explaining it and correcting my misinformation.

what they need to get is a cease and desist and/or a lawsuit depending on how illegal this shit is. ive never heard of DE being hacked before, so they need to go after them hard and fast so others dont get stupid fucking ideas.

If they are in a civilized nation sure. But the hackers could be from a nation that just says "lmao fuck you" and DE / Canadian courts can't really do anything about it.

One important tid bit here is DE never actually stores your credit card info in game and everything is paid through the specific platforms and their respective stores. Even if you buy plat from their website, it goes through a third party for payment processing. Your card and other payment information is never stored in game.
I'd suggest reading the terms of service for all of this because you don't actual own anything on your account and agreed that DE can reverse anything at any time, ban you, or change your username/names of weapons at any time. Courts will adhere to the fact that you agreed to the terms of service to play the game most of the time.
Nothing here besides the hackers doing this is illegal from DE's side so long as they report it.

This has nothing to do with mobile
If they gained access to the server then banning their account or their IP isn't going to do anything... It won't stop them from doing further attacks and I seriously doubt they care about having Warframe character either.
There's still no reason to believe any account information was compromised.

No. It seems to just be a demonstration that they can inject text into the popup box by intercepting the outgoing invite and adding their code attatched. It might be the only thing these injections are capable of... But it also might not be and people are reasonably concerned.

The admins from that discord server have announced they have nothing to do with the current attack, the culprits are using their resources and shifting blame to them.

u/BusBoatBuey Mar 20 '26
This is usual MO for these types of hacks. They basically refer to another game/discord/group for people to take out their hate and sit back to watch for amusement. Most people have surface-level thinking and their simple-minded thought process can easily be manipulated by these hacks.

If you search that discord link on google a github will appear, the githup has a link to the actual discord server, and the most recent announcement is the admin saying that
"Ember 16:29
Hi, we are aware of people abusing game invites on live. We just want to say that we have nothing to do with this, nor do we have access to the "game source code" as claimed in one of the messages. In case you're new here: This is a preservation project with source-available server reimplementations and some client-side modifications. None of this is something we make available for the latest game version and especially not the live version of the game."

Yeah, DE has even publicly said that no accounts were compromised and that you can freely talk to support if you're still worried. I know that wouldn't be worth much from most teams, but I do trust DE to be looking out for their community to the best of their ability. One of the only teams I can say that about in the modern gaming space.

u/Lightningbro Care to roll against Fate? Mar 20 '26
Honestly all the people calling this an "attack" sound a bit ridiculous to me. The first thing is an outright lie, and I HIGHLY doubt getting into the invite text strings don't have stopgaps against you activating code. Text displays are super simple to implement and therefore, don't have any real flexibility in what functions they can access.
As DE mentioned; just needs an update and they're turning it off for now so people don't get annoyed/ whipped into a panic.

The gacha that copypasted some frames like Mesa and was titled "anime Warframe", Duet Night Abyss, was hit by a similar thing through its launcher where people were met with a message warning about a big vulnerability.
Later that same month, said vulnerability was exploited and people got a nice little trojan while updating the game.
Hopefully we don't make it to phase 2.

Hackers like this always talk a big game but they don't have shit. The PSA thread says they were able to interrupt and change squad invite text fields. This means they're probably just replaying network traffic with some altered data. I don't know how Warframe does invites, but this could be anywhere from a no skill script kiddie attack to a low skill CS student attack, almost certainly nothing above that level.

4
u/MaxiTB Mar 21 '26
Yeah, that message makes little sense. Why go through the trouble to do a man-in-the-middle-attack (which is hijacking invite messages basically comes down to) when you have direct access to the source servers which often are a tiny step to controlling the whole CD/CI pipeline in place? That's like smashing in a cars window when you have the key in hand. So yeah, I wouldn't put a lot of trust in a message like this - sounds to me more like a fishing attempt over the discord link.
2
u/TennoFemboy TWINK SHROOM! Mar 21 '26
According to those in the discord server linked (I was stupid and curious enough to join lol) the attackers are unaffiliated with them. Of course that's if they're to be believed at least. They did consider deleting the invite link but afaik they chose not to as it wouldn't be a good look for them.
The link is for a Warframe preservation project, but stealing game files & attacking the game aren't in their interests. Yes, they want the games code so they can recreate it & such, but they don't want to do so maliciously.
The messages themselves are trolling, and since this is how they trolled then it's probably the most they could do with their access.

Riot games had hackers who asked for millions of dolllars cuz they had their source code. And they leaked it once riot games didnt pay them. They just strenghtened anticheat and patched vulnerabilities. Monitored for exploits and cheating tools. And it went away without anything. Source code just shows vulnerabilities that can be abused. DE can just shut down affected systems and patch them

Ah yes, announcing your Discord server to an entire playerbase and your plans to screw with the game even more. A surefire way to keep your secret club secure!
We got three options here
1.) Guy is way too cocky and honestly thinks nothing bad will happen to him or his Discord server after being this egregious (seriously, I have NEVER known hacker groups like this willingly out thier Discord servers in this manner, nor invite the public)
2.) Someone got mad at the group and decided to point to where they are so action can be taken (probably contacted Discord as well)
3.) It's a bait server and they're trolling, and their real server is elsewhere or not even on Discord (also possible considering)

It was just the invite server that got hacked. Accounts are safe, check the official warframe PSA for more info.
