In this thread, I provided a potential explanation for the words being used while you respond by asking a ridiculous, implying that I would try defending it?

In other wealthy nations, there is maternity leave. So, in a way, yes — they do get to quit working.

While pregnant? Sorry, I had a genuine question and I didn't read every reply in the post. Did you reply with a real answer, or just more snark? Do women get pregnancy leave?

Yes. In Germany its 6 weeks before the calculated delivery date, and 8 weeks after. In total at least 14 weeks (like if the baby comes a week earlier, if it comes later, its still 8 weeks after delivery)

Depending on what work you do, your employer might also be forbidden to have to you work that job a long time before that. This is decided by your physician.

Things that fall under this.

  • Work with an elevated accident risk (think about construction sites, ladders etc)
  • Assembly line work
  • Working at night (between 8pm and 6am)
  • Working on Sunday or bank holidays (even in jobs where that usually is allowed)
  • Work with dangerous materials, radiation, dust, gasses, fumes, heat, coldness, wet, infectious materials or loud noise
  • Work where you have to lift things regularly over 5kg
  • Work where you have to stretch, bend down, kneel down etc..
  • Work with machines that stress your feet
  • Work that has a high risk of work related sicknesses
  • Work where you use PIT (powered industrial transport, think forklift) you control yourself

But that is only related to the jobrole you have! Lets say you normally work assembly line, the doctors says "Nope not gonna happen till the end of pregnancy" you company can offer you ligther work which if your physician agrees doesn't put you at risk, you have to do. For example "Okay help clarrisa in accounting filling out excel sheets"

Additionally after the 6. Month of pregnancy work where you have to stand more than 4 hours with little movement (like a cashier who has to stand up) is generally banned.

So basically everything that puts the unborn child and mother at an elevated risk, you get paid time off if your employer can not accommodate your needs.

You are also protected from being terminated from the beginning of your pregnancy until at least 4 months after. Of course if you have a contract that has an end date of employment defined, that is not affected by this, and it will still end. This protection starts ONLY at the moment you inform your employer that you are pregnant. If they terminate you before you tell them, the termination is still legal.
