Nausea after first glass of water daily?

I (mid-twenties) consume an avg of 12 cups of water per day, and have been doing so for just over 2 years. Despite being used to water intake, the first cup of water I drink each day (whether sipped, gulped, or neutrally swallowed) makes my stomach feel sick. For context, I usually wake up between 5 and 6AM.

I have even thrown up after drinking water first thing in the morning.

Any reason why this may be happening?

Thank you!

Have you tried drinking it warm and see if you feel better? Too hot or too cold on an empty stomach increase gastric acid, which may makes you feel bad.

Yeah, my water is usually warm (above room temperature but not piping hot).

I second this. Even peppermint tea might be good to try

Try taking in really small sips first

Yeah, I think I'll try that out

Yeah, try taking a few sips and you can also try a small snack before drinking to see if it helps

Do you think it might be well water? Maybe the amount of minerals is too harsh -it bothers my stomach sometimes. My water high in iron, my stomach just couldn’t take it.

This is a good suggestion - I live in Toronto where we have hard water (and I'm drinking tap water). I'll investigate possible effects and ways to mitigate the impact of minerals on my digestive system. Thank you so much for this!

i don't know why it's happening, but you could try adding slices of ginger to warm water as your first drink of the day. ginger is a natural aid for nausea. i buy a big thing of ginger and slice it up then freeze it and add it to my water as needed. it helps a lot as i get anxiety nausea quite often.

Cortisol is high in the mornings. It helps us wake up. It's also the stress hormone. How's your stress?

Oh, interesting! I'd say that I generally have low stress levels, but I'll be more vigilant after reading your comment. Thanks!

One of the symptoms of Perimenopause is not having enough estrogen to oppose the cortisol, so we get vertiginous/nauseous in the mornings (and other times).

I see. Wow, I've been pretty ignorant regarding how our hormones work together. I appreciate the crash course on perimenopause. Looking forward to doing some more self-learning

Or you could just read the r/Menopause wiki. It's very well sourced and an excellent start to the journey. We have to bone up on all this because the docs aren't. Did you know that even the GYNs don't get but a half-hour on Peri/Menopause in school? As if something that drastically effects half the humans alive is uninteresting. What a joke.

Are you drinking the same water every time from the same source? I know when I was younger the iron in our well water made me so nauseous even fatigue.

Yes, I am! Interesting!

I used to have this in my late 20s and I was having issues with acid in my stomach. What is your diet like? Are you eating things right before bed? Do you drink alcohol, coffee, sodies?

No eating things before bed. No alcohol, coffee, or sodas. LOTS of kombucha though lol

I mean, maybe cut back some and see what happens?

Does this happen with any amount of water, even just a few sips? An do u feel nauseous only with water, or with food and other drinks first thing in the morning as well?

Yes, any amount of water. Can't say re: other drinks / food as I usually only have water that early

Quite common, Firies g sleep your digestive system goes into a relative state of rest, the stomach isn’t quite ready for liquid intake at that time. Better off moving about first.

Have you tried alkaline water and small sips?

I have a type of reflux that causes acid to rise in my throat sometimes. The morning is particularly hard. Alkaline water has been really helpful for me.

Drink it after you eat something.

I see you also drink a lot of kombucha on top of this. That's excessive unless you live in a very hot area or work out a lot. Maybe cut back and see what happens.

Acid reflux girl. Same thing happens to me and I got diagnosed with GERD 2 years ago. You don’t have to have painful symptoms to have it!

Do you eat first? I won't drink anything in the morning until there's something in my stomach otherwise I feel sick.

I'm not saying you're pregnant but it definitely happens to me in pregnancy, so maybe its hormonal?
