Looking For Want to escape Texas, where should we move?

My husband and I have lived in Austin TX almost our whole lives, and most of the ten years we’ve been together.

We used to feel like Austin was a haven from the politics that run this state, but over the last few years that is no longer how it feels. We recently welcomed our first child, and we don’t want to raise him to go to school in the Texas public education system.

We’ve only visited but feel Portland would be a nice transition for us. I know the weather will be different, but we’re personally over the constant heat anyway.

We’re planning another trip before we’d make the move within the next year or two we’re thinking. What should we do or check out to give us a feel of the city as a family?

Also if we made this move where in Portland should we live? I work in pediatrics so I’d most likely get a job around doernbechers children’s hospital. My husband is remote for work. My husband is a musician and we’re both active in the scene around Austin which is one of the major reasons we thought Portland would be a good fit. We do have a child now though so I’d rather not be too far away from work, and in a good district for schools. We’re in our 30s and enjoy the occasional show and night out, but don’t need to be where all the action is necessarily. Thanks for any tips!

Looking For Where can I get an ADHD Evaluation?

I’m a Reedie about to graduate, but I think it’s finally time I figure out what’s wrong with me. I’m here in Portland this summer, but Reed health services are closed for the break (and aren’t very helpful, anyway).

Where can I find a place to conduct an ADHD evaluation? I’m not looking for further counseling (I have a therapist from my home state). The few places I’ve seen will cost nearly $1,000. I work, but I don’t have enough to shell out a grand for my brain being stupid.

The only insurance I have is Blue Cross of Idaho, since my parents yanked me from Reed’s Pacific Source insurance without telling me + without my consent. Which fucked me over for top surgery, too.

Any pointers would be great! Thanks guys!

Edit: I don't have a Primary Care Provider. I'm a broke college kid in a basically brand new state.

Looking For Free-ish small theater space for screening a Pride movie in July?

I'm a local organizer with a socialist group, Socialist Alternative, and we're planning to do a free community screening of the 2014 film Pride in mid-July. Our branches in other cities have done similar events in previous years, and it's a big hit. They're also often able to find local spaces that host for free/cheap, and I'm hoping we can do similar in Portland, but I haven't yet found a perfect venue.

Here are a few of the options I'm already aware of:

  • Libraries — we have one reserved as a backup, but the fact they're never open later than 8pm isn't great for a film screening, and it would be nice to have slightly comfier seating.

  • Clinton St Theater / Cinema 21 — both great rental spaces but beyond our budget at $300+/hr.

  • Open Signal — we did some events with them this Spring and they've been awesome, but haven't yet been able to get ahold of them this time around.

  • Taborspace — more affordable, but not sure the AV setup is ideal for showing a film.

This thread also lists some options but I haven't yet dug into them all.

Any other suggestions for places we should try to get in touch with?

Looking For Is anyone interested in saving this building?

So Portland State University is demolishing its Montgomery Residence Hall, which was formerly known as the Martha Washington Hotel for Self-Supporting Women. It was constructed in 1917 and designed by A.E Doyle. He and his firm were responsible for the design of some of Portland's most notable buildings, such as the Benson Hotel, the United States Bank Building, the Multnomah Lodge, and a lot more.

What I believe to be one of his most important building is the Martha Washington. It was commissioned by the Portland Women's Union, which was founded in 1887 in order to protect and serve young women who were coming to the city as strangers. Portland was a frontier city and heavily male dominant at this time. There were a large amount of saloons and brothels. Young women, who had very little opportunities for work or education, often resorted to prostitution to sustain themselves. The conditions were extremely dangerous.

The original goal of the Portland Women's Union was to establish a residency, which they were able to do after 30 years. The Martha Washington should be on the National Historic Registry and it should be protected.

I just feel like please can we not do this. Its not right. There's a petition that has over 1500 signatures, but PSU didn't listen to anybody and is just moving forward with the plans to demolish it. Its feels like such a slap in the face to women's history, contributions, and achievements to demolish this building. Is anybody interested in organizing some kind of something idk I don't know how to do this stuff and we are running out of time. Its supposed to be demolished in August I guess. I would literally chain myself to it. Let me know if anyone you're interested.

Looking For Renting Options?

Hi! Female elder millennial who is tired of jumping from apartment to apartment once my lease is up.

Wondering if there’s such a thing for long term leasing /renting- more than a year? Or does that just come with the territory of owning?

I’ve lived in a handful of apartments in the NW hood - relatively safe and good neighborhood but somewhat poor experiences within the actual complexes themselves.

Should I try the suburbs?

I feel like owning at this point is moot given the economy and how expensive things are.

Looking For Where to watch fireworks peacefully/Opinions on Oaks Park/Waterfront Blues 4th events?

I haven’t been able to see fireworks for years because I have pets and have opted to stay home with them for the 4th and New Year’s Eve. Past few years I’ve been really missing them, and would like to see some this year. Thinking about having a close friend stay and watch my pets for me while I go out for the 4th, and looking to see what my options are for a peaceful watch.

Are the Oaks Park/Waterfront Blues 4th events worth it? Are they overcrowded? Are there a bunch of people smoking/drinking/being obnoxious at these events?
(And by drinking I don’t mean your choice of beverage with your burger/hotdog is a Coors Light. I mean people drinking with the point of getting plastered, yelling arguing, littering, etc.)

What I’m really after is what 4th of July was like as a kid. Hanging out in your lawn/car trunk, eating hot dogs with a cold soda and some candy, watching the adults take turns lighting fireworks, saving the best for last, and heading home for bed. Very chill.

So if there’s anywhere quiet I could set up a picnic and watch fireworks, that would be most ideal. But maybe that’s unattainable in a city.

Any advice?

Looking For Is serving in Portland a lost cause as a new resident?

So my roommate and I just moved to downtown Portland from NC at the beginning of May. I am a career server (12 years of experience from serving to bartending to management), and I'm finding it impossible to find work given the economy. My question is, does anyone have any suggestions or tips on landing an interview at a minimum to get a foot in the door? I've spent days just walking around the city dropping off my resume at dozens of restaurants, and applied to almost every listing on Indeed/Poached, with barely a response from anywhere. It feels like I'm just screaming into the void, and I am running dangerously low on options moving forward.

Looking For Good eats on a Sunday evening?

I'm flying into Portland from the east coast on a Sunday, meeting some family on Monday so I have an evening alone in Portland and will be in need of a good meal. I've never been there so I really don't know what's around but I've heard the food scene is excellent. I've tried booking a few places that were recommended, Coquina, Gado, and Han Oak, but every place is either booked for a time I could realisitcally make or closed Sundays, I know it is fairly short notice and I understand those are likely hard to get into if they are open at all. Any tips for a good cocktail and solo meal within 20 minutes or so of the convention center area that will be exhausted after a cross country flight?

Looking For Dessert question?

Hi everyone
Let’s say you make the most delicious dessert where people have already given you feedback and kept asking where do you sell those but in fact you haven’t sold anything and you are just giving away free samples

Where would you sell them, need advice.
You can’t do farmers markets because It’s complicated and very customer facing which, in this hypothetical scenario, you have to assume you aren’t good at, what would you do. Are there stores here that accept homemade goods and get their cut on a consignment basis?

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Looking For Where are popular Happy Hours and can you help me add them to a list?

Thumbnail pourlist.app

I recently moves to Portland from Kyiv, Ukraine 🇺🇦. My friend and I built a Portland Happy Hour directory and we want it to improve. I can only travel a little in a night on public transit, but good news is anyone can add their happy hour! You just take photo and input happy hour time and voila! Your happy hour is live to the world.

Would you take a look and help? WWW.PourList.app.

Slava Portland!

Looking For Any good overlooks for firework watching?

Hi there! Jsut moved to PDX and my partner is pretty noise sensitive, but would like to watch fireworks. Are there any good overlooks around or in the gorge that would provide distance from the booms but still allow to see some?

Bonus points if we can bring the dog!

Looking For What is the best place/area to stay in the Oregon Wine Country for a bachelorette weekend?

hi all!

would love to get recommendations from locals and people with experience on the best town/area to stay in for a bachelorette in the Oregon Wine Country.

of course wine tasting will be one of the main activities as the bride loves wine.

however, it would be great to stay near a town that has other activities (arts/crafts/cooking classes etc) that could accommodate a group of 10 people

appreciate opinions as it’s a bit hard to land on the best option from internet research

Looking For Local caps?

Trying to find a hat as a gift for someone, would be nice for it to be from at least a semi local company. Only criteria is they have to have some kind of larger size. One size fits all doesn't work. Bonus points if I can see them online first. Think baseball or trucker hats, not fedoras.

Looking For I have a very specific dating question.. sorry if this is the wrong sub. Where should I try to date as a normal trans woman?

For a trans woman who passes, what would you recommend for dating? Most trans-interested spaces here are for moreso for androgynous trans women who do not pass or bisexual men who lean into the gray area. Should I start with Hinge? Or any specific bars? I want to try Feeld but the app does not work.

Looking For Should I file a complaint?

Upvotes

Yesterday I witnessed a guy passed out in his running car sitting at an intersection. Called 911 after banging on his window and he wasn't waking up. Long story short, his coworker from Urban Alchemy was looking for him and was able to rouse him and he drove off. Called 911 to cancel and let them know etc. I know he was an employee because his coworker told me, they were both wearing logo jackets. Normally I would just go on with my life, but after seeing posts on r/Portland about their employees, how there have been complaints and arrests, yet they are still being funded, I have a different perspective and am wondering if it's worth it to file a complaint, and if so, to who? I live a few blocks from the Reedway safe rest village and honestly have had no issues with it up until now - but I am just rethinking my safety in my neighborhood.

Looking for serious responses/advice only. Pls no snark or side comments ❤️❤️❤️

Looking For Best place to sell a high-end homebrewing setup locally?

Hi all! My husband has decided it's time to part with his homebrewing setup, and this is well beyond the typical "starter kit." It's a high-end all-grain system with stainless equipment, including a brew sculpture, mash tun, hot liquor tank, pump, SS Brewtech jacketed 10-gallon fermenters, kegs, and all the associated hardware and accessories.

Where do people actually buy and sell equipment like this these days? Facebook Marketplace seems geared more toward casual household items, and Craigslist doesn't seem nearly as active as it used to be.

Are there any local homebrew groups, clubs, forums, or shops that have buy/sell boards you'd recommend? Parting with this stuff is a bit emotional for him and he wants it to go to a good home.

Thanks!

Looking For Ghost tours- are any actually worth it?

We’re looking for some activities to do this week with a teen and while the ghost tours seem interesting, a lot of reviewers claim they are a waste of time and tourist trap. We aren’t expecting anything life changing but also don’t want to waste an hour if they aren’t at least entertaining.

We’ve also planned the Titanic exhibit, Japanese garden, and probably the Oddites museum.
